Sonic Adventure: Sonic: I gotta stop Eggman! Tails: I want to be strong! Knuckles: I have to find the master emerald pieces! Amy: I want to save a bird! E 102 Gamma: I am being torn apart between my loyalty to my creator, and the realization of wrongdoing at the hand of my master. Being shone compassion by my captive had awakened an unprecedented feeling of right and wrong, that I do not yet understand. Can a robot truly feel these things? Are my brothers suffering as I do? Eggman has demonstrated complete disregard, and a total lack of morality in the treatment of others, therefore I must turn against my own creator, even against myself in the end... Only in death can we hope to end this horror at the hand of our master. Big: *fROGGY*
He has by far the most emotional story in the game! He actually developed feelings on his own, even though he wasn't programmed to have any! Not only that, but he sacrificed himself...just to save the bird.
I always thought that Gamma's story was strangely profound for a sonic game. On an unrelated note, this may be one of my favorite Who Dat episodes! Good job Digi!
Real talk tho Gamma's theme fits his character perfectly. It reflects his mindset throughout the story and in itself tells his story without having to show it to us. It starts up with a synthetic droning sound that slowly fades out as the percussion and main melody take over, like a computer's soulless BIOS booting up and then making way for the operating system to take over and giving us something more easily understandable. He speaks our language now, and he can take orders. You can even hear a voice just before the melody say ""It's my pleasure," and this phrase repeats throughout the song. The verse is straightforward and slightly repetitive and the drums are consistent like a machine running and executing code and commands. Then the chorus kicks in and there's a change in the tone. The melody changes to use longer, pondering notes instead of the quick, decisive notes from before. He's not sure about what he's doing anymore now that he's seen Beta and talked to Amy and her Flicky. The chorus reaches it's climax when he breaks through his indecision and frees Amy and the Flicky before the main verse returns as Gamma takes some more orders from Eggman to receive his upgrade and goes to fight Sonic. After his duel there's another section that sounds conflicted at the start before the melody works through itself. It's almost frantic and the bass drum is used more in this section as his processors work overtime to figure out what he is and what he should do. Eventually the melody calms down, leaving just a series of long notes and the drums, still hard on the bass pedal. He's made his choice, but it's not an easy one. By now the "It's my pleasure" has stopped, too. He sets out to free his brothers by killing them. By the end of the song the music fades out as the synthetic droning returns, only for that to fade out as well. His task is complete. Now he must shut down.
I remember beating Gamma's story when I was a little girl, and I was so shocked, once I realized they'd killed him off and heard that music as his body exploded, I started SOBBING. I don't care what anyone says, to this day, this is my favorite character in the Sonic series.
Unchanged... *Except for the comic.* Yes I know it's not really relevant to Who Dat but it's a fun diversion anyway. In the Archie comic, Gamma was largely playing the same role, although it was told with a much different point. Namely, getting E-123 Omega to change his ways. Gamma was effectively in the same position, just with a different goal in mind. He'd eventually realized his goals in destroying the other E-Series under this world's Robotnik, and had since gone on to be his most persistent and dogged enemy that wasn't Sonic himself. With no means of repairing himself properly, his body had begun to 'decay' over time, parts falling off or rusting. But his tactics had advanced more than ever, and with it his sense of self. That's when G.U.N. decided to send Agent Shadow, at the time a member of the organization, to pick up Gamma and have him join their team, repairs and upgrades and all. Robotnik, on the other hand, wasn't having any of it. Instead he sent Omega to destroy Gamma outright, believing Gamma too big of a hassle to try and reprogram. Gamma at this point was a different character than in the games, as well. Whereas the games had Omega rebelling against Eggman from the start, trying to destroy "Worthless consumer models," the comic Omega was instead loyal to Eggman... Just absurdly arrogant about all that built in power and bulk. While Omega had been built to defeat Sonic once and for all, Eggman was sending the bot on otherwise menial tasks, leading to Omega dismissing some missions as "beneath it." That is, until it was tasked with hunting down Gamma. So both sides track down Gamma to a snow-covered valley in the middle of the snowstorm. Unfortunately, Omega finds Gamma first, and the two begin to fight. It's barely a fight however, as Omega has enough raw power to obliterate the fellow E-Series in a second... but is never given the chance to do so. Gamma had evolved, becoming a sniper of a robot rather than the random blasting bot he once was. Gamma even used conventional camouflage from the environment, cover, conventional traps, and superior tactics to the far younger robot. ...Still didn't do much though. After all, Omega could tank most anything and blast through most anything. But it gave Gamma time to talk, through their shared tech. Gamma explained (while outmaneuvering Omega at every turn) that he'd questioned himself after being forced to fight his brother Beta, and in turn found purpose in freeing/saving his fellow E-series, as well as opposing Robotnik. Omega questioned this with cold efficiency, if a tone of arrogance. Why should Gamma, who is clearly breaking down, even be trying to fight back against the inevitable? Gamma's responded with a strong sense of purpose. To carry on making things better. Omega scoffed at this, claiming that Gamma could never break it's new advanced armor, even with his skill. Gamma agreed. But figured with enough time, uploading itself into Omega would be a suitable alternate option. Omega admitted defeat, as Gamma presented itself in front of Omega, and Omega blasted it's target to smithereens... And a little Flicky flew out safe and sound. As it turned out, while Gamma's own sense of self wasn't passed on, it's sense of morals and will to truly rebel was. Omega was from that point on forever changed, and forced to value "meatbag" life. And all life, really. As such, when Shadow finally arrived on the scene, he found Omega alone... Who agreed to come with Shadow instead back to G.U.N., with a new sense of purpose and sense of self. Gamma had left his legacy, by turning the single most powerful E-series robot, into his successor. Needless to say, Eggman wouldn't be making any more E-series robots after that.
You can pick up the Archie app for free. They even offer free issues. Check out the first 3 issues of Sonic Universe since they are free. Your view on archie Shadow will make you respect him in ways ShTH failed at. While you're at it, buy Sonic Mega Drive. it's a fun ride through the classic era and only relies on what your familiar with from the games to tell it's story unlike the rest of the Archie written canon.
By far the most important detail of Gamma's existence is the way that his levels have a countdown death timer that is only extended by blowing stuff up. As one of Eggman's robots, Gamma can only exist through destruction. This also helps us see into Eggman's methods.
After seeing this video, I've raises some questions that I've never quite considered before: How many of Eggman's Robots developed morality and sense of self and went through similar stories to Gamma? Was Gamma a fluke, has Eggman somehow devised a way to deliberately program morality, or do all of Eggman's robots posses these qualities without his awareness? Eggman more or less has a brand new army of minions every single game, so what became of all the badniks that didn't get scrapped by either Eggman, Sonic, or the authorities? What tales could they tell us?
I like to think Eggman; who intentionally develops his robots to have an A.I that can learn and adapt as to keep up with Sonic - has this unintentional side effect hat these advanced A.I can develop to having their own soul, given time and with a proper goal. As can be shown time and time again; Metal Sonic, Gamma, Chaos Gamma, Omega, Gemerl, the Hardboiled Heavies. And those are just the canon examples (most of which became threats that Eggman could not handle)
We see most of Robotnik's creations are actually quite stupid with Cubot and Orbot being his right hand men, yet being the dumbest of all. I think it's possible he struggles to find the right intellectual balance, trying to make a robot smart enough to do his bidding, but not so smart it pulls an Omega.
Most likley scenario is this: Regular badniks have next to no free will. They just have the objective of (Stop Sonic and his friends). Others like Gamma Omega and Metal Sonic (and I guess Sage, too) all have the capability of "learning" for lack of a better term. As we see, Metal Sonic gets revived to be upgraded in Sonic 4, and is following under Eggman. Yet his next appearance is in the final egg base, likely being too damaged to be used. Then in heroes, he's against Eggman. Only to be left as his right hand robot in Rivals 2 and colors ultimate. Likley suggesting that Eggman removed Metal's free will to make him more obedient. Since both most prominent members of the E series both rebeled without Eggman's knowledge, they kept their free will ever since, in the case of Omega, at least. In conclusion, Eggman has created Robots with free will, as they are constantly shown to be stronger with sentience. But because he's got his superiority complex, he just assumes they'll stay working with him regardless of how he treats them.
the amount of shit you had to go through just to save the guy pissed me off , i was like what do you mean the universe it self is eating away ,why are there balls eating the stage . oOoH MY G~OD
Because you not care fore Sonic. You KNOW he is comming back. I dont whant to count how often he died in the Comics. There are even some Metal Sonics who are diying and it bring more emotion out of me than the main karakter,.
100 % agree on that, Digi truly makes quality content, so hopefully his subscriptions will soon reflect this. In the mean time, he always has our support 😉.
"This presents a problem" is one of my favorite lines in all video games. I'm so glad you included it in this video! Thanks for doing a Who Dat Gamma. This is a story that needed to be remembered.
Gamma is by far my favorite Sonic character, his arc was the first I completed and it was the first time I had ever cried at a piece of media. I like how you said his story was the most "complete" of any Sonic character. I never really thought about his story until you presented it as so.
YES so glad you made this episode. Gamma's story was my favorite thing in the whole game, and really left a lasting impression on me. Also helps that the boss battle at the end with Mk.II was easily the best boss in the game with that incredible music. You told this characters story and why it matters to the Sonic universe in it's own little but perfectly-formed way superbly.
I just have to say (despite this being an old video) I think my favorite thing about his design is that his running animation is just him riding on the wheels connected to his feet. I remember the first time I saw that it was so amazing to child me. Also I doubt you'll see this but man I found this little series you made today and I love it. keep up the good work DiGi.
Yeah; Gamma and his story were easily some of the best moments of Sonic Adventure, and I feel they still hold up today for the most part in ways the rest of the game might not (and I count his gameplay in that, comparatively simple though it may be). If you'll pardon me for doing my normal Overbearing VGM Nerd Thing™ once more, I also really like the decision behind doing Gamma's theme the way they did. Every other playable character had a big, anime-style image theme full of cheesy lyrics that in some way relate to their character. Comparatively, Gamma's theme song was more "gamey", entirely instrumental, and let the music speak for itself without needing words to tell it- or Gamma's- story. The decision to put beautiful, melancholic piano lines over breakbeat ladden techno was also damn fine audio-based symbolism for Gamma's plot arc too, on that note, and it's something I feel Fumie Kumatani needs more credit for. Certainly the other characters' themes did let the music speak for itself as well, in terms of genre and flow (y'know, Sonic with his "fuck you mum I do what I want" butt rock, Knuckles with his "what would happen if Biggie and Kool & The Gang had a punch up in an alley" funk-rap-thing), but the lack of lyrics in Gamma's theme really brought that element to the forefront; it COULDN'T rely on lyrics to get the message across, so it had to do it with it's melody, chord progression, key, arrangement, and so on and so forth. Granted, the entire point of Video Game Music is coveying mood/ambiance/story etc. without lyrics, but hey, still cool shit imho.
2:37 Gamma: I see a huge time bonus here. Anyway, Gamma was my favorite character in Sonic Adventure. Just...that ending, was so beautiful. He's also got my second favorite character theme in the game.
I am quite certain that what makes Gamma so memorable, is entirely for the pacing, writing, and directing of his story. It is the most complex sonic team ever get's into telling a story for a sonic character. Gamma is indeed an interesting character for the troubles he goes through, but the one real factor to his worth is in the directing of his story, specially by the end. Hell, even his theme from sonic adventure sord of has that slow, sorrowful but clear and determined feeling. A robot questioning his existence, but never stopping to be said robot. Making a character this memorable isn't as hard as sega may think, and they should seriously try this again at some point.
Definitely the most emotional storylines in the entire series. Just imagine seeing your sibling being torn apart in front of you, no wonder why he associated saving with killing, because their lives weren't worth living. And animals, probably.
Gamma is one of the strongest aspects of sonic the hedgehog. I love how he had this truly ambitious story with plenty of character growth, and then died at the end. You know what the best part about it is? Gamma was never touched again, which allowed him to leave a mark on the series and really be it’s own unique thing. I wish sonic team would give more emphasis on story nowadays instead of just trying to be childish and self aware
Gamma had the kind of ending Shadow should've had in SA2. They made it work eventually, but going from "Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog" to GUN agent and/or loose cannon antihero was very awkward, and robbed the impact of his initial story arc in a way I consider brutal and disappointing.
is anybody else thinking " what about Sonic battle?" I know the gamma in that game wasn't the same robot, and merely an identical model, but it still shows a type of legacy. it's been awhile since I played through Sonic battle story, but I still remember it still being a story of questioning self worth that parallels the original gamma and uses cream in place of Amy as the introduction of consciousness and then for shadow to interact with the robot about what it means to be born as a weapon. the whole game had a theme of the struggles of ataining peace and the morality of fighting (which is ironic for a fighting game)
This video was intensely polished, and dealt with one of my favorite characters who is normally, as you said, forgotten. I can't believe I hadn't heard of you before! Fantastic work, keep it up.
actually gamma feels like hes based on a frog due to his legs,, the way he jumps,, his small body,, the way he compacts when running makes him look like a sitting frog,, and his eyes have the weird opposing angles like frogs do
In retrospect, I think Gamma's design is extremely well thought out... He's got a hint of weak helplessness to him. the constant wall eye'd expression and he's weak looking spindly legs carrying a huge clunky body... He's suppose to be imperfect.
This was such an eye opening episode with a overwhelming sense of sadness for the greater good (In terms of Gamma' s story). Keep up with the work DiGi. ☺
I'm so glad you made an episode on Gamma, I've always loved him so much, ever since I was a little kid! He's probably my favourite Sonic character honestly, and in turn this is one of my favourite Who Dat episodes uwu T-thank you again!
Oh Gamma i remember how much i cried at his death when i fist saw it and even today i would shed a tear when is see that scene. I mean he is like the only Sonic character with the most character development! If you don't think his ending is sad then sorry but you have no heart. I mean i see blind lets players (mostly) feel sadened by his death...except Egoraptor...that asshole... Don't look at me like that. This is NOT the Game Grumps channel so i can safley and openly say i like Sonic Adventure. Deal with it haters. If you don't like the game that is no problem. We all have different tastes and opinions. However if you have a PROBLEM with me for LIKING the game...then fuck off. I get so paranoid when i want to make a GOOD point about ANYTHING about this game during their playthrouhg and even i did acknowledge the flaws and why others would see it as a bad game...everyone would still think i'm an idiot for liking the game. You can say "They are just trolls" but on the internet it's hard to tell between trolls or those who actulaly hate Sonic because of Arin Hanson. I remember explaining why this scene is so emotional and the why people would find it emotional but it doesn't matter what good point you make Sonic haters would find a way to make it look like "Duh Sonic fanboy is wrong! We haters are right!" and one of the reasons was because "It wasn't performed well! The awful animations and voice acting is what ruins it!" ....really guys? Sure i'll admit the animation and voice acting did not age well but....really? I deleted the comment to avoid getting more negative comments. I'm serious; people if you never watched GG before and like sonic games and see your favourite sonic game that is actually good being unfairly based on by the GG...i suggest you ignore the videos all together and do NOT make a comment. Trust me from my experience you are NOT allowed to state your opinion on the game...doesn't matter what you say or do to eveyone else you are just a stupid blind sonic fan who shouldn't be taken seriously. Even if you just say "I like this game" without ever saying stuff like "Arin is playing bad on purpose" or "People unfairly hates this game" or any other reason to try to make a point...you are still gonna get hated. If you like it you are a blind sonic fan boy and thats all they see. They don't care if your a nice guy, a true sonic fan, a proffesional video game critic, a celebrity, the president, the emperor, jesus christ or even god himself. Too them as long as you like Sonic you are scum of the internet and have no place in it.
Arin had played the game before to be fair so it wasnt blind, but seeing as he hates sonic with aburning passion and is responsible for the sonic hatewagon reaching a fever pitch, i cant really say that gives him a pass.
don't worry mate, you're not alone, I even think Sonic Adventure is BETTER than Sonic Adventure 2 by a long shot, despite having Big The Cat, it's the only hindrance to the rest of the gameplay, while SA2 had a lot of questionable stages and BORING messes (Mad space for example)
Bob the Temmie Arin has always come across as pretty abrasive to me, he seems like the kind of guy who would be hard to get along with. He also mistakes his ideas of what games he likes with objectively good game deisgm (as shown by Ocarina, where most of his complaints were "I HAVE TO WAIT A FEW SECONDS")
oh wow a guy on the internet hates the game you really like holy shit time to suicide how can i live with this omg Just don't care about someone's hate of a thing you like, because to you your opinion should be the most important. btw i really love both SA1 and Egoraptor
Gamma being a part of Tikal's visions is hilarious to me for some reason. Like, from all the characters that go there, he has to be the one with less idea of what the hell is going on. And when it's over he just brushes it off and pretends it didn't happen.
MEANWHILE, IN A UNIVERSE WHERE THE E SERIES WAS PROGRAMMED TO DO THE EASIEST TASK ON A LIST FIRST "Oh dear god I'm a robot" *Gamma self destructs* *Credits roll*
Pretty deep shit for a game mostly centered on a speedy blue hedgehog and his two tailed foxy sidekick fighting an egg shaped mad scientist. God, I miss the old Sonic Team.
The fact that I was just playing through Sonic Adventure again yesterday and was finishing up Amy's Story along with Gammas and then see this in my sub box put a huge smile on my face you don't even know. Thanks for the fond memories :)
I was just replaying Sonic Adventure on the PS3, and while I was skipping the cutscenes on all the other characters I decided to not skip Gamma's because for years I've been a bit of a Gamma fan because of his story. Thank you for nailing what's so lovable about Gamma. Definitely gonna subscribe. I do feel like Sega WANTED to retcon Gamma's story in Heroes when they were looking for a 3rd member for Team Dark with how "copy and paste" Omega is to Gamma. But I imagine someone within Sega said "No, let's make a character that is like Gamma instead of ruining the best story we've written"
Was he made from Gamma's parts? I don't recall that being said. Eggman did make other robots in Gamma's likeness in SA2. They are a "blink and you miss em" kind of enemy. I thought Chaos Gamma was just another robot built in Gamma's likeness. (as is Omega with his color scheme being very similar to Gamma's) Popular theory goes is that Eggman never found out about Gamma's betrayl, so in Eggman's eyes; for the most part Gamma was a success even though he couldn't defeat Sonic. Hence why Eggman would go on to make robots resembling Gamma in later games.
@@bryandacote8109 No Chaos Gamma was made using salvaged parts from the original e-series line up. With a good eye and a knack for lore, you can actually recognize the difference parts and which robot they belonged to.
I'm so happy someone has understood Gamma's short story. I personally believe he should be loved more at least acknowledge more for his short yet sweet story. Another beautiful asset of Sonic Adventure 👌🏽
Thank you for covering this underrated character. I was actually hoping the video would make some mention of the related character Chaos Gamma in Sonic Battle, though it wasn't the case. I am looking forward to seeing more videos on certain Sonic characters and robots though! (Tails, Emerl, Metal Sonic)
He did appear in sonic battle, except it wasn’t _really_ him btw sadly when sonic adventure 2 was released gamma’s voice actor passed away (note: beta killed gamma, he didn’t self-destruct)
you fucking got me this time digi, I was tearing up this whole episode. Ever since I was a kid when I played this game and played it again when I was older on the xbox his story was one of if not my favorite, and seeing your video talk about it in detail really brought me back yet again. I'm also glad sega left him as he is, and thanks to this video I think I'm gonna ne playing the game again just for him
Man, Gamma was one of my favorite characters in the series, in the Top 5. I wish they could've been given more appearances. It doesn't have to be canon or part of some story, it could've just been a party game like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
Great vid man - Gamma doesn't get nearly enough love.. Easily one of the most memorable characters from the entire Sonic franchise. ;) (Much more so than Big the f**kin' Cat...)
5:03 I think that's the point. Gamma's design isn't supposed to be creative or interesting. It's supposed to be plain and unnoticable, since that way he will feel like a nobody other than a mindless soldier, which he pretty much is. Or at least, was, before he started acting by individually, which was the main reason he became a somebody, a hero in his own way, the saviour of the flickie family. His actions are making him a character, not his looks.
Oh interesting thing I noticed when relistening to Gamma's theme. Interesting that out of the entire cast from Sonic Adventure 1 (besides Chaos and Eggman) he is the only one without many to any vocals. Nicely reflecting Gamma's final moments and his minimal dialogue.
Gamma is my favorite Sonic character honestly with Omega being a close second. Funny how the robots ended up being the more enjoyable characters in the series.
Ha! Gamma's theme is so solid that DiGi and his crew wouldn't dare try to remix it! It's that good. Great job on this vid. Gamma really is the most complete and emphatic character in the entire Sonic universe. Considering the circumstances, he was probably the last good character coming from the old Sonic Team method, before everything hit the fan and went full anime.
They actually added dialogue to the Gamma vs. Beta scene in the Sonic X retelling and you can really see how the lack of dialogue makes it so much better.
AAAAAWWWW YIIIISSS! My best robot detailed by a great youtuber. Is this heaven?? Edit: I have seen your video, and I'm a fan 100% mr DiGi!! It was the first story in a game to make me cry. No other vg history has affected me as this one when child. Also I thought he was an hibrid of an egg and a chicken due to its legs when he folds them. Yeah, also saw the bastion resemblance, hahaha
ah I remember seeing this in Sonic X it was a pretty sad story :c but awesome video as always DiGi ^^ always looking forward to them and just put me into a good mood besides this video format you is a little different from all the previous ones!
Not only did Sega do him good - the Archie's comics did Gamma good too. Bless this boy's soul as he's as precious as Lonesome Road ED-E. It's not often I feel for robots but Gamma is the first Robot I recall ever crying over -I was young when I first played SADX- and I say that as it's not often robots get well written.
The most human character with the most heart in the franchise is a robot ironically. He had no expressions, a monotone voice and didn't even speak up all that much. Yet the devs were still able to convey to the audience his thoughts and feelings.
Sonic: Gotta go fast! Tails: Being brave Knuckles: Emerald broke Amy: Protecting a bird E-102 Gamma: As a robot initially created for war and violence, Gamma begins to question and understand the meanings of life, love, and why we cherish things that we hold close, even if it brings no benefit. Gamma then takes it upon himself to deny his directives and delete his master registration to free his brothers from Eggman's grasp, by killing them one by one. He believes this is a way to save them, as they have not been blessed by Gamma's gift of free will and do not understand the difference between right and wrong. After discovering that he himself is not free, and that a bird remains trapped inside of his own metallic vessel, Gamma takes it upon himself to end his own life by activating his self destruct to free the bird, thereby ending his short-lived story. Big: Froggy?
Damn, I remember being upset as a kid when Gamma died. Back then it was because "cool robot died" now as an adult i'm once again getting teary eye'd realizing the significance behind the final confrontation with beta.
Gamma, or at least robots with the same design as Gamma, have actually appeared in later games as well. Gamma lookalikes were in SA2, only with two gun arms instead of one. There was also a new Gamma in Sonic Battle.
Funnily enough, Gamma is basically the opossite of what Omega turned out to be. Gamma is more of a pacifist, who turns against Eggman for the sake of his brothers, Omega is obsessed with destroying every Eggman robot on his way just because he's pissed at the doctor for locking him up inside a room. He grows as a character too, just not as much as Gamma.
If my memory serves, Gamma reappears (sort of) in Sonic Battle as Chaos Gamma. In fact, many characters recognize Chaos Gamma as E-102 Gamma, even though they're two different robots. Though it's mainly Sonic, Tails, and Amy who recognize him as the original Gamma. And for some reason, Knuckles seems to recognize Chaos Gamma as the original, even though they never interacted. (Knuckles just spotted Gamma and followed him to the Egg Carrier)
great to see some recognition of my favourite character in sonic adventure. I think that gamma really benefited from having a short story. instead of becoming another amnesiac seeking out his true self like shadow (even if gamma came first) we get to see him learn that even of he doesn't learn everything, that's okay. him only appearing in one game allows that feeling not to become stale but instead accept that he is happy as is. also please do omega or emerl. I know omega isn't the best character but emerl has a similar story to gamma but with it's own twist at the end.
Gamma and the Flicky inside him are separate entities. The Flicky doesn't influence his emotions at all; he develops them on his own. Also, Gamma didn't activate his self-destruct; he deactivated his auto-repair system.
Really interesting that Gamma's one of the only characters in the franchise to get a complete story. And even more interesting is that Eggman's still oblivious to his betrayal! He's built 3 different robots after his design XD
Sonic Adventure:
Sonic: I gotta stop Eggman!
Big didn't have to go so hard. God dang
Messing up big’s text makes it even funnier
I wasn't ready for this 🤣
Gamma..the robot that made everyone cry when he died ;w;
He has by far the most emotional story in the game! He actually developed feelings on his own, even though he wasn't programmed to have any! Not only that, but he sacrificed himself...just to save the bird.
Guys he's alive he's just a flickie
toongirl007 well I mean Iron Giant and Baymax did the same thing
I miss him to T-T
But he return on Sonic world
I always thought that Gamma's story was strangely profound for a sonic game.
On an unrelated note, this may be one of my favorite Who Dat episodes! Good job Digi!
aye aye sir!
Based
Unchanged...
Wow! I forget how deep the comics can get into the story of these characters.
Woah. I think I should get my hands on the Archie comics.
You have to remember though, the SATAM/Archieverse just isn't canon. It's great of its own , but it has no bearing on the games whatsoever.
Samir Malik Oh nice. Thanks man.
By far the most important detail of Gamma's existence is the way that his levels have a countdown death timer that is only extended by blowing stuff up. As one of Eggman's robots, Gamma can only exist through destruction. This also helps us see into Eggman's methods.
After seeing this video, I've raises some questions that I've never quite considered before:
How many of Eggman's Robots developed morality and sense of self and went through similar stories to Gamma?
Was Gamma a fluke, has Eggman somehow devised a way to deliberately program morality, or do all of Eggman's robots posses these qualities without his awareness?
Eggman more or less has a brand new army of minions every single game, so what became of all the badniks that didn't get scrapped by either Eggman, Sonic, or the authorities? What tales could they tell us?
Daniel Maniel; All really good questions, dude. Never thought of this before. O_O
Most likley scenario is this:
Regular badniks have next to no free will.
I love how when gamma died I almost cried but when sonic dies I sit with this face -__-
because it is highly unlikely that Sega would permanently kill off their star :P
the amount of shit you had to go through just to save the guy pissed me off , i was like what do you mean the universe it self is eating away ,why are there balls eating the stage . oOoH MY G~OD
weird girl The fact that Sonic dies with the doopiest of faces makes my face go like XD
Because you not care fore Sonic. You KNOW he is comming back. I dont whant to count how often he died in the Comics. There are even some Metal Sonics who are diying and it bring more emotion out of me than the main karakter,.
Who Dat? one of the most underrated shows on youtube made.by one massively underrated youtuber. great video and keep it up
I was just thinking that. For once the YT suggestions list work and led me here and these are great!
I'm glad it did because he deserves it after all the hard work he put into this series
100 % agree on that, Digi truly makes quality content, so hopefully his subscriptions will soon reflect this. In the mean time, he always has our support 😉.
SWLEO123JED; PREACH
And that theme though
"This presents a problem" is one of my favorite lines in all video games. I'm so glad you included it in this video! Thanks for doing a Who Dat Gamma. This is a story that needed to be remembered.
Gamma is by far my favorite Sonic character, his arc was the first I completed and it was the first time I had ever cried at a piece of media. I like how you said his story was the most "complete" of any Sonic character. I never really thought about his story until you presented it as so.
RiDEL; Agreed, I never thought of it like that either, but it totally makes sense.
I swear that last scene always gets to me every single time
TheKeven28900;Me too, bro. Me too. Q_Q
Favourite story, character and track from Sonic Adventure. Cheers for this vid DiGi!
Grizzly Guernsey Gamer
Here, here.
Grizzly Guernsey Gamer; TRUTH! Gamma's track is slammin', bro!
For a robot, he has sweet expressive "eyes"
YES so glad you made this episode. Gamma's story was my favorite thing in the whole game, and really left a lasting impression on me. Also helps that the boss battle at the end with Mk.II was easily the best boss in the game with that incredible music. You told this characters story and why it matters to the Sonic universe in it's own little but perfectly-formed way superbly.
Yep, strongest narrative in the game. It's a genius idea too.
Certainly the other characters' themes did let the music speak for itself as well, in terms of genre and flow (y'know, Sonic with his "fuck you mum I do what I want" butt rock,
Knuckles with his "what would happen if Biggie and Kool & The Gang
had a punch up in an alley" funk-rap-thing), but the lack of lyrics in Gamma's theme really brought that element to the forefront; it COULDN'T rely on lyrics to get the message across, so it had to do it with it's melody, chord progression, key, arrangement, and so on and so forth.
I actually liked playing as gamma...
Anyone else??😴
Hot Shelter was cool!
tsangpogorge yea
Definitely the most emotional storylines in the entire series.
Just imagine seeing your sibling being torn apart in front of you, no wonder why he associated saving with killing, because their lives weren't worth living.
And animals, probably.
Now thinking about it Gamma has to be one of the most well written characters in the sonic universe.
I'd argue he IS the best written Sonic character.
Gamma has quite possibly one of my favorite stories in SA1, so it's neat to see that you're covering him. :3
gamma's story is my favourite part of the entire franchise, shame it never gets attention.
Best character in SA1 story wise. Emerl has to be coming too.
thank you. thank you for visiting and bringing back my childhood. and i love your "Who Dat?" videos.
11/10 Better love story than twilight.
No pun intended.
He's probably my favourite Sonic character honestly, and in turn this is one of my favourite Who Dat episodes uwu
T-thank you again!
14:07 This.
This is the hardest thing to come to terms with.
Gamma: The Best Sonic character ever
Arin had played the game before to be fair so it wasnt blind, but seeing as he hates sonic with aburning passion and is responsible for the sonic hatewagon reaching a fever pitch, i cant really say that gives him a pass.
pikminguy55 I do agree on one thing...
Ego raptor is an asshole because he blindly hates the series
don't worry mate, you're not alone, I even think Sonic Adventure is BETTER than Sonic Adventure 2 by a long shot, despite having Big The Cat, it's the only hindrance to the rest of the gameplay, while SA2 had a lot of questionable stages and BORING messes (Mad space for example)
Bob the Temmie Arin has always come across as pretty abrasive to me, he seems like the kind of guy who would be hard to get along with.
He also mistakes his ideas of what games he likes with objectively good game deisgm (as shown by Ocarina, where most of his complaints were "I HAVE TO WAIT A FEW SECONDS")
oh wow a guy on the internet hates the game you really like holy shit time to suicide how can i live with this omg
Just don't care about someone's hate of a thing you like, because to you your opinion should be the most important.
btw i really love both SA1 and Egoraptor
Gamma being a part of Tikal's visions is hilarious to me for some reason. Like, from all the characters that go there, he has to be the one with less idea of what the hell is going on. And when it's over he just brushes it off and pretends it didn't happen.
MEANWHILE, IN A UNIVERSE WHERE THE E SERIES WAS PROGRAMMED TO DO THE EASIEST TASK ON A LIST FIRST
"Oh dear god I'm a robot"
*Gamma self destructs*
*Credits roll*
Love this character, love his story in Adventure, awesome video as always digi!
Gamma did apear in Sonic Battle
well a robot made from his corps anyways
*corpse
@@bryandacote8109
No
Chaos Gamma was made using salvaged parts from the original e-series line up. With a good eye and a knack for lore, you can actually recognize the difference parts and which robot they belonged to.
6:52 You do know Android 16's hands detach, revealing gattling guns right?
*GIVE ME THE BIRD*
No! Never!
Why not?
The censors won't allow it
My favorite song of Notorius C.A.T. is "hipnotazed be tikal" from the album light after dark
E-102 Gamma has more personality than most of the sonic characters, what a shame for them
I'm so happy someone has understood Gamma's short story. I personally believe he should be loved more at least acknowledge more for his short yet sweet story. Another beautiful asset of Sonic Adventure 👌🏽
Gamma is the best. Hands down. Thanks for dedicating an entire 15 (almost 16) minute video pointing out why he's the best. TTvTT
Yeah, that's my boy.
Wow I never realized that Gamma was actually the mom of the bird Amy had with her!
Also Gamma is a playable character in Sonic Shuffle
sonic adventures was my ever sonic games so I never forgotten gamma (my favorite robot) I love this vid
I never interpreted Gamma's death as self-destructing. I just assuemd he died from Beta's final attack.
these sega character episodes make me think of the old days. thank you! oddly enough this relaxes me haha
Easily one of the most memorable characters from the entire Sonic franchise. ;)
(Much more so than Big the f**kin' Cat...)
I cry every time I play or see Gamma!
easily the most underrated TH-camr out there, you deserve like 500k subs and 700k views
Gamma was for sure one of my favorite characters and storyline, he's one of the few characters that has a pretty deep history when you stop to think.
Gamma DOES take inspiration from something.
Dr. Robotnik
Gamma is my favorite Sonic character honestly with Omega being a close second. Funny how the robots ended up being the more enjoyable characters in the series.
Speaking of Sonic robots and character derailment, I think an episode on E-123 Omega would be cool.
I absolutely love this video. I feel like this video gives a lot love for an underrated character - who actually is pretty flawless lol
I have been waiting..... so bloody long for an episode on this guy.
We destroyed an uncountable about of robots in sonic games but when gamma dies we cry
He doesn't self destruct; he dies while trying to turn around as he was going to try and get the birb to come back.
Hey man, loved the video! Always great to see Gamma getting some much deserved love!
I love your channel. Also I've been going around saying Bastion is based off of Gamma for a while~ His designation is E54 too which is really suspect.
ah I remember seeing this in Sonic X it was a pretty sad story :c but awesome video as always DiGi ^^ always looking forward to them and just put me into a good mood besides this video format you is a little different from all the previous ones!
R.I.P Gamma, one of my favorite characters in the Sonic franchise and Sonic Adventure
After playing this a few times I decided to think of it as the bird remembering who he was and piloting a mech to save his family
The most human character with the most heart in the franchise is a robot ironically.
He had no expressions, a monotone voice and didn't even speak up all that much. Yet the devs were still able to convey to the audience his thoughts and feelings.
Sonic: Gotta go fast!
Tails: Being brave
Knuckles: Emerald broke
Amy: Protecting a bird
E-102 Gamma: As a robot initially created for war and violence, Gamma begins to question and understand the meanings of life, love, and why we cherish things that we hold close, even if it brings no benefit.
Gamma definitely had the best character arc in all of Sonic Adventure, and maybe even all Sonic Games
I was expecting Digi to say "Goddamn, I miss the old Sonic Team" when talking about Gamma's importance
Ive always wondered how the birds survived the explosions...
I always got the impression that he came to the conclusion that the last bird was inside him so he self destruct to free it.
Omega Wouldn't Exist If Gamma Didn't
Also, Gamma didn't activate his self-destruct; he deactivated his auto-repair system.
gosh i love that outro music so dang much.
He came back in Sonic Battle, kind of
Does this man take suggestions? Because after this, I would LOVE a Who Dat on Emerl & E-102's spiritual successor, E-123 Omega.
Maybe his design was based on a turtle considering how his eyes look like they’re popping out of his body & the TMNT-like hand & feet?
Really interesting that Gamma's one of the only characters in the franchise to get a complete story. And even more interesting is that Eggman's still oblivious to his betrayal! He's built 3 different robots after his design XD
William Brown Eggman just doesn't give a crap. The damage he did to his plans was pretty minimal.
