    What do you think of the topics that are being discussed at these Tolkien events? Does it represent Tolkien's vision or is it an attempt to subvert the books into something they were never meant to be? Let me know your thoughts below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

    • @disparutoo
      @disparutoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +160

      Sometimes things are set up with one idea, then as people join the group or get promoted the ideas change. Other times people will deliberately choose names that are the opposite of what they actually intend. In order to use that name as a defence, or to give a false impression to people who don't look into them. I've not looked into how it happened here, but it's very common.
      The national trust for stately homes in the UK has also fallen fowl of the same thing. Set up to protect British history, it now despises it.

      It's a couple of political ideas that have made their way into the mainstream.
      First of all to praise something or tolerate something is synonymous with supporting it.
      Secondly, the bad ideas of the past exert an influence on the present. Essentially forming a sort of intellectual baggage that holds us all back. The old revolutionary phrase "to make a better future, we must destroy the past." Covers this one nicely.
      So whatever it is that you don't like must be fought against and made unacceptable.
      This also brings to mind the phrase "the revolution devours it's children." Which means that as whatever group you're supporting gets more and more radical eventually you find yourself left behind and in the unacceptable category.

    Lord of the Rings is not a franchise, it’s a series and it’s complete. It doesn’t need anything added, if you want more then read the Hobbit or Silmarillion. Something that made me realize how the core message of Tolkien is being polluted/misunderstood was when some people were surprised that I, a catholic Tolkien fan, hate Game of Thrones. They said it's basically the same thing. And I was like no, they are complete opposites. They didn't seem to understand why. Like hey, swords and dragons.

    • @7slavok
      @7slavok 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      In terms of genre, sure, they're pretty similar in that Tolkien invented a genre and Martin wrote in that genre. But in ideology, they're complete opposites. While Lord of the Rings is a story about gritty optimism in the face of impossible challenges, A Song of Ice and Fire is fantasy nihilism. And one of the reasons why the show ended so poorly and the books might not end at all is because you can't extend a nihilistic world view into a satisfying ending. Either the nihilism is rejected or the ending is unfulfilling.

    • @adamduffield7782
      @adamduffield7782 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@7slavok well it's not the nihilism that males this happen, with GOT it's because the writers tried to be clever and cram so many subplots and character twists they get themselves in a bind and cant get out of it.
      David Fincher is a perfect example of how to write nihilistic stories and still conclude them, 7 and fight club are 2 noticable movies/stories that do this well.

    • @petercselik5674
      @petercselik5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@7slavok Its a good one. The Game of Thrones end was really that bad in every front because they refused to embrace either side. The show was about this nihilism while none of the ending become that. People would take on the total defeat on the long night and the would cheer to see a nobody wins ending. Instead they tried to turn it to a Lord of the Rings like finale where all the evils will fail and the goods are revarded. Its just so out of that show.
      Aria's stab has no effect on the Night King and she die unceremoniously while she put her best effort in it is something a Game of Thrones should have. Eowyn victory over the Witch King something Lord of the Rings should have. And the opposite would not fit in the story on either side.

    This was my least favorite part of lit classes in college. We’d read books from the 1800s England and students and teacher would point out sections that are “racist” or “sexist” but if you think about the culture of that time, it was revolutionary thinking. They hated when I pointed out the curlture of the time period. They just wanted to rag on all of the classics and how bad they are. They didn’t care about the original intent or the author’s view of the society they lived in, they wanted to read it with today’s standards in mind. Heck, we had a meeting with admin who wanted to know how to improve our English department and one girl complained that we had to read Shakespeare because he’s an old white guy without anything good to say. I told them we needed to focus a little more on seeing the pieces as what they were when they were written and their significance when they first were created. I took lit classes because I was passionate about it. Other students took them because they thought they’d be easy.

    • @xLeeroycranex
      @xLeeroycranex 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, this isn't how English departments used to be. They got taken over in the late 60s-80s by the New Left, who tried to diminish the concept of a "Western canon" and literary history in favor of race, gender, and class. It's only now that they've finally seized control of narratives, criticism, and storytelling, in general. That product is woke-ism.

In the end I had to open my gob and quote Hemingway himself on the subject "it's just a story about a man and a fucking big fish, don't let anyone tell you different". He'd said it in an interview when the interviewer began talking about the subtext blah blah blah. My lecturer wasn't impressed which was ok because the feeling was mutual. 1:45 The more I see of Amazon's "Rings of Power", the more it looks like the producers got confused and modeled the series after the wrong 2001 film, using "Dungeons and Dragons" for their template rather than "The Fellowship of the Ring"!
    For its budget, "Rings of Power" looks no better than a cheap SciFi Channel fantasy series from the early 2000s (not surprising, since "Wheel of Time" looked the same way). Heck, even those Hallmark-produced fantasy miniseries of the late '90s (such as "The Odyssey" and "Merlin") looked better, despite their mediocre-to-poor '90s CGI effects. After Peter Jackson set the bar for big-budget fantasy film in 2001 - _over twenty years ago_ - Hollywood has, for whatever reason, chosen to take us back to 1997. In that case, we all might as well just rewatch Armand Assante's Odysseus poking cyclopses in the eye instead!

    What the heck is so morally wrong with Gimli & Legolas, and Frodo & Sam, developing bonds of mutual respect and camaraderie that they have to insert romantic relationships into it? For people that so often cry against 'toxic masculinity', this showing of mutual friendship and supporting is always made into something different.

    • @RoninDave
      @RoninDave 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's an attack on male friendship. It's ironic with the toxic masculinity crowd that they have helped fueled this by reading gay subtext in every male friendship in media that real life male friends are reluctant to show affection to one another. It's also the fact that these "deep" thinkers are really superficial that they can't understand human relationships that don't have a materialistic goal such as physical sex. Tolkien was in WWI. He understood the bond men have who face death together something these modern "deep" thinkers don't.

      “Those who cannot conceive Friendship as a substantive love but only as a disguise or elaboration of Eros betray the fact that they have never had a Friend. The rest of us know that though we can have erotic love and friendship for the same person yet in some ways nothing is less like a Friendship than a love-affair. Lovers are always talking to one another about their love; Friends hardly ever about their Friendship. Lovers are normally face to face, absorbed in each other; Friends, side by side, absorbed in some common interest. Above all, Eros (while it lasts) is necessarily between two only. But two, far from being the necessary number for Friendship, is not even the best. And the reason for this is important.
      ... In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out. By myself I am not large enough to call the whole man into activity; I want other lights than my own to show all his facets... Hence true Friendship is the least jealous of loves. Two friends delight to be joined by a third, and three by a fourth, if only the newcomer is qualified to become a real friend. They can then say, as the blessed souls say in Dante, 'Here comes one who will augment our loves.' For in this love 'to divide is not to take away.” ~ The Four Loves

    After trying to suffer through the first episode of the Wheel of Time in my second attempt to watch the garbage through... I don't know how much more "love, care, and affection" I can take from Amazon, to be honest.
    It blows my mind that anyone would watch the Wheel of Time - a story based on a voluminous, episodic tale, written by a relatively modern author, with plenty of female "representation", perfect for television - be adapted with a child's level of writing and character design - never mind with a large amount of current-day political misandry thrown in for good measure, and then think: "You know what? We should let these same people adapt the appendices of the Lord of the Rings!" You know, all of those great short stories Tolkien wrote about the hubris of man and horror that befalls those who deconstruct and deconstruct until they find themselves far from the path of wisdom - under the thumb of Morgoth.

    "And last of all the mounting wave, green and cold and plumed with foam, climbing over the land, took to its bosom Tar-Míriel the Queen, fairer than silver or ivory or pearls. Too late she strove to ascend the steep ways of the Meneltarma to the holy place; for the waters overtook her, and her cry was lost in the roaring of the wind."
    The Silmarillion, Akallabêth
    Fairer than silver, ivory and pearls eh? :) Tar-Miriel, one of the Dunedain, the Numenoreans, you know these guys?
    "They took off their masks now and again to cool them, as the day-heat grew, and Frodo saw that they were goodly men, pale-skinned, dark of hair, with grey eyes and faces sad and proud. They spoke together in soft voices, at first using the Common Speech... and then changing to another language of their own. To his amazement, as he listened Frodo became aware that it was the Elven-tongue that they spoke... and he looked at them with wonder, for he knew then that they must be Dúnedain of the South, men of the line of the Lords of Westernesse"
    ...
    "They became thus in appearance, and even in powers of mind, hardly distinguishable from the Elves - but they remained mortal, even though rewarded by a triple, or more than a triple, span of years."
    ...
    "Riding one day in the forests of the Westlands he saw a woman, whose dark hair flowed in the wind, and about her was a green cloak clasped at the throat with a bright jewel; and he took her for one of the Eldar, who came at times to those parts of the Island. But she approached, and he knew her for Erendis, and saw that the jewel was the one that he had given her; then suddenly he knew in himself the love that he bore her, and he felt the emptiness of his days. Erendis seeing him turned pale and would ride off, but he was too quick, and he said: "Too well have I deserved that you should flee from me, who have fled so often and so far! But forgive me, and stay now."
    You know the Numenoreans, ethnically descendants of the Edain of Beleriand, the three ethnic groups Hadorians/Marachians:
    Yellow-haired they were for the most part, and blue-eyed; but not so was Túrin, whose mother was Morwen of the house of Bëor.1
    The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Ch 17, Of the Coming of Men into the West
    Beorians:
    "The Men of [the House of Bëor] were dark or brown of hair, with grey eyes...."
    The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Ch 17, Of the Coming of Men into the West
    ...
    "The Folk of Hador were ever the greatest in numbers of the Atani, and in renown (save only Beren son of Barahir descendant of Bëor). For the most part they were tall people, with flaxen or golden hair and blue-grey eyes, but there were not a few among them that had dark hair, though all were fair-skinned." HoME12 The Peoples of Middle-earth
    ...
    "The Númenóreans were not of uniform racial descent. Their main division was between the descendants of the “House of Hador” and the “House of Bëor”. These two groups originally had distinct languages; and in general showed different physical characteristics. Each House had, moreover, numerous followers of mixed origin. The people of Bëor were on the whole dark-haired (though fair-skinned), less tall and of less stalwart build; they were also less long-lived. Their Númenórean descendants tended to have a smaller life-span: about 350 years or less. The people of Hador were strong, tall, and for the most part fair-haired. But the chieftains of both Houses had already in Beleriand intermarried. The Line of Elros was regarded as belonging to the House of Hador through Eärendil (son of Tuor, the great-great-grandson of Hador); but it was also descended on the distaff side from the House of Bëor through Elwing wife of Eärendil, daughter of Dior, son of Beren (last chieftain of the House of Bëor, and seventh in direct descent from Bëor)." The Nature of Middle-earth
    Why the heck they did not use the Haradrim as the go to people for having this diversity checkbox?! Haradrim were dark skinned!

    I have never been the biggest Tolkien fan, but even I know that Tolkien despised any form of allegory. He just wanted to tell a story without allegories or hidden messages behind it. Another case where the people who make themselves the advocates of somebody's legacy have no idea about the man and his views.
    What I also do not understand: why just take established characters and gender/race swap them? It's such a lazy, hamfisted and in many ways disrespectful approach; just imagine a Zulu chieftain being played by a white man! Why not create your own niche and try to fit other ethnicites into the story in an organic way? I would love to see a show about the Easterlings and their internal struggles, their relationship with Sauron, or the reasons why they turned against the other people. And honestly, it would ruin the immersion for me if some of the Easterlings were played by white actors. There is enough diversity in the LOTR, it doesn't have to be inserted or "invented" by unimaginative amateurs.

    • @sianais

      Diversity can also exist in seemingly homogenous groups, lack of melanin doesn't equal lack of diversity. That's something people always forget. It's one of the things that irk me when they shove random black people in stuff where you could see there's a history and culture for everyone else except the black or other "non-white" insert. It nagged me for a long time why it was so off-putting. If it was a real close knit culture that existed in unity for ages, why are distinct racial/ethnic features present? That only occurs if there are distinct cultural differences at play that prevent complete mixing, but you're also shown none of those exist. It makes no sense, that's not how reality works and everyone intuitively knows this. There's a reason you could tell a Korean person and Japanese person apart, or a Norwegian from a Brit, even who comes from the north, south, east or west in the same country. So when they say it's normal for Lenny Henry to appear in a group so dissimilar from him with no distinctions amongst them despite his existence proving otherwise it's jarring like a while Zulu chieftain. They're pushing modern ethnic populations that exist for specific reasons in worlds where none of those exist. You can't make a historical Chinese drama with random Native Americans mixed in with no explaination how this co-existence happened while pushing them as one cohesive tribe that don't intermarry to preserve their own unique traits. That math doesn't add up. The ethnic make up for most populations gradually bleed in and out to closer you get to one or the farther you go too (barring stuff like slavery or mass immigration possible by modern trasportation).
      I'm tired of my skin tone being used as justification for ridiculousness.

    Tolkien created a masterpiece from the ground up. Making an entire universe before even people knew it was Middle-Earth. Before Arda in the Timeless Hall of Eru Ilúvatar, and his Ainur creating the realm of Arda throught music with harmony cords (with Melkor disruptive cord , even when the Ainur took physical form to live on Arda to shape the world. This was a time before the elves were around.
    See history before time began. Tolkien wrote about everything and anything in His universe. This is what people love about him, his work, and his stories.
    Middle-Earth is loved by people from all walks of life.
    And Tolkien legacy doesn't need to be edited by people who doesn't give a crap about his work, his life's work. If you start to edit or change anything his wrote about, it's wrong on so many levels. No wonder Amazon is having all this backlash.

We (non-English) should strive to learn more about Tolkien's homeland, culture and world view through his work, not force ours on his.
    P.S. But now you understand well how it feels to be colonized, right? ;) When a bunch of arrogant, selfish and greedy assh***s come from across the sea, claim and take things that you value or hold spiritually dear as their own, and try to denigrate and trample you if you resist.

Despite that, I still enjoyed the Bakshi portion recognizing it as a product of its time. Peter Jackson's LOTR was a massive improvement, a beautiful distillation with a better signal-to-noise ratio, akin to High Fidelity (although the Hobbit was bloated). What the ROP suggests is more like a constant echo at high decibels of white noise: no soul, no respect, no intellect, and a lot of verbal poop flung by the chimps in their echo chambers.

    This whole mess boils down to the fact that copyright protection is absurdly long. If copyright only lasted for the life of the author, all of Tolkien's works would be in the public domain. That would mean Amazon could make its terrible adaption, while a competing producer could make a more faithful adaption, and the public could decide which was more deserving of viewing.
    But because copyright protection is so ridiculously long, it means Amazon has exclusive rights, and thus everyone is stuck with only their crappy adaption, with no competition.

    I have loved Lord of the Rings ever since my father took me to see the Fellowship of the Ring in theaters when I was just a wee little lad. Tolkien has greatly impacted me and inspired me throughout my life. I have an extremely intricate and high fidelity tattoo of Sauron's helm (based on the model used in the films) on my forearm done by one of the finest artists in my city. I also have the The Witch-King of Angmar's helm tattooed further up across my left bicep/ tricep.
    They are aesthetically brilliant but it's what they represent metaphorically as symbols for the corruption of man that is the reason I chose to permanently embed them onto my body. I have received many compliments and initiated many great conversations, friendships and even relationships because of them. I have always been proud of having those tattoos and never felt any regret or shame over them whatsoever. After seeing Disparu's and many other youtubers coverage of the upcoming Rings of Power, however, it is with equal parts sadness and horror at this nightmare inducing zombified fan fiction resurrected corpse of a production, that I must announce the removal of my tattoos.
    I'm scheduled for my elective arm amputation in two weeks time. Sure, I could have had them removed via laser but that would not be nearly sufficient enough of a gesture to convey how deeply dishonorable it would be to have the audacity to still be wearing these tattoos *after* this..."Lord of the Rings iNsPiReD" series has aired. It was either that, or commit ritual Seppuku (Hara-Kari), but I don't have an assistant on hand willing to decapitate me after I've plunged the tantō blade into my belly and severed my abdominal aorta. Such is life. At least by going ahead with the elective amputation procedure I won't have to live with the everlasting shame and dishonor of displaying those beautiful, ethereal tattoos representing a bygone era of literature and cinema that was then bastardized by the soulless Amazonian overlords. I'd rather be a one armed man with dignity than a two armed dishonorable sellout, endlessly cucked by a trillion dollar corporation.

It has totally different rules from the ones established in the books. It is not recognizable as a LOTR adaptation or prequel. Bezos ROP adaptation isn't based on Tolkien's works or his world. Amazon looked at the Lord of the Rings appendices for their source material, claiming now it’s an inspiration but they appear to be about as related to Tolkien as D&D or World of Warcraft. From the Showrunners to the Super Fans, to the paid reviewers, paid fan sites, and clearly Amazon PR talking points which are seemingly based more in 2022 viewpoints and worldview than the one from Tolkien’s time and the detailed world he created, and his son complimented with completing some of his dad’s works or compiling and commenting on them.

    Amazon doing something with some care and affection? Ahuh say that to the wheel of time adaptation. Attention to detail is also laughable. If they cared for detail they would have got simple things right like character descriptions and there's the small matter that this is legit fan fiction. The only rights they hold to the second age is the god dam appendixes in the trilogy. I can't trust Amazon when they've shown they suck at making fantasy. Fantasy requires a lot more thought put into it. It's why TV shows avoided it for years even preferring something like sci fi over fantasy as it's such a hard thing to do right.
    Does amazon not know why Japan is kicking America's ass in media like animation and comic books/Manga. Might it be because they treat the source material with some god dam respect? For gods sake the AOT anime has 2 of the top 3 spots listed for the best eps in TV history. Now not every Manga to anime adaption is good but even most of them treat the source material with respect. Amazon doesn't respect the material even though Tolkien has done all the hard work for them. Where's your original fantasy show Amazon HUH? Willing to buy someone's hard work and run amok with it but not so willing to make your own fantasy world yourself?
    Also for the one prick on twitter who doesn't understand why people love the Jackson films it's quite simply because it's one of the best film trilogy's of all time. Now is 100% perfect to the books. No. But he fit in every possible thing we could. Also if we do compare the new stuff to the old stuff well the films have a very small budget compared to what Amazon can throw at this thing. If the original was a TV show with Amazon budget than hell yeah I imagine it would be a dam near perfect adaptation. The films also had a time limit and a budget limit to come to. We can't do 6 or 8 hours films as people have things to do in life. But 6 or 8 one hour long episodes is easier to manage. Yes he changed some things for story telling reasons. It is also impossible to convert everything from book to film. Some things are not going to transfer over well or easily. Like character thoughts. In a book that's simple to do but in a film that's a very difficult thing to make work. For gods sake most of the actors in the films wear real armour that was forged on set along with real swords etc. I can tell a lot of the Amazon stuff is going to be CGI. A clear example of this is the way Galadriel moved up that ice cliff in the ROP trailer looked so god dam fake and unnatural it's embarrassing a 20+ year old film puts it to shame.

The only reason they are doing Rings of Power is because Bezos demanded a GoT type show so that's what's this will be. We already know they've broken canon because Celeborn is dead in it, yet he's alive and well in LotR book and movie. Elves can't resurrect so it's already in breach of contract with the Tolkien estate because not messing with canon was one of the stipulations in the contract. Then there's the very real issue with The Boys being written, green lit, and in production before the current trend in entertainment really got a big foothold.

    All I keep seeing in my head is Amazon constantly saying "Fuck you" everytime they release anything to the fan base. Also, these activists better keep their greedy little mitts off LOTRO.
