- Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is just 2 weeks away from releasing on Amazon Prime video on the 2nd of September with its first 2 episodes. But Time Magazine and Wizards of the Coast have come out with new Rings of Power content, alongside comments about J. R.R. Tolkien. Can you respect and revere an author while changing the very Lord of the Rings characters like Aragorn he spent his life creating? Is this what we should expect for the future of LOTR: Rings of Power?

With Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power this time we've got Time Magazine coverage, Twitter trailer teasers, She-Hulk comparisons (which I also think will appear in Andor and House of the Dragon) and Wizards of the Coast Aragorn disasters. It's been a busy few days for Rings of Power it seems. As we approach the release in under 2 weeks now, it looks like they just keep doubling down with no sign of taste or decency. But what do you think of the new marketing, Aragorn or fake sauron's costume? Let me know your thoughts below and as always, thanks for watching :)
Gynogaladriel - Super Elf waman
I'm hoping that normies, younger ones especially, will watch this show and then go read the books. Many may fall by the wayside, but some will join our Fellowship and reject Amazon and all their Wokes.
The weird Eminem looking dude/fake sauron is actually played by a woman (Bridie Sisson)
I would check the Gandalf card if I were you. Looks like Gandalf the Black
You've quickly become one of my favorite TH-camrs. You're absolutely compendious! If only the industry morons would pull their heads out of their asses and listen.
When someone watches lord of the rings and says "I didn't see myself represented." I just assume they don't associate themselves with bravery or having any morals. Almost everytime I'm right too.
Brilliant comment dude! XD
They still should have seen themselves represnted then - by orcs.
I’d reply “Yeah well it’s an Old Fantasy Fiction. Not a New-fangled Nightmare like you”
Should have shown them scenes with the ring wraiths
Its just a sign of a narcissist.
They call us obsessed with race and racist, but race swapping popular well known characters is obviously what is race obsessed and racist.
A few years back they cast a black guy for Achilles in the story about the Trojan war. It's that ridiculous!
Exactly, is them being the racist ones always bringing race into everything smh.
@@scorchedearth4248 yes, the famous blonde-haired Achilles cast by a black man. However, the are plenty of ‘scholars’ willing to make mind-bending contortions of logic in order to argue that ξανθος, referred to several times in the Iliad, doesn’t somehow translate as blonde or fair, in order to justice this woke garbage. I got goosbumps when the black dwarf woman stood on a rock qouting Martin Luther King, and the harfoots started tribal dancing as a protest against Sauron’s colonial evil. Such embodiment of the Tolkien spirit!
After the tribal dancing they burned their own village to the ground in protest!
@@scorchedearth4248 Then, when the white knights of gondor came to offer peace to those living in the village, they were stoned and caught on fire. Such a stunning and brave group.

@àsper But to the East, there are rumors of someone who wishes to reunite the realms of man, to drain the dead marshes and to make Gondor great again.
Hmmm, maybe I'm remembering incorrectly but I thought they were '"twerkin' on Sauron" not tribal dancing.
I’m a British Asian, me and my best friend went from pretending we were Frodo and Sam to pretending we were Aragorn and Legolas. Didn’t once pause to think wait no can’t do that they’re not brown. This excactly. No idea why people i adore have to be from the same race. Sounds kinda racist to me...
T'challa can't be cool for me because hes not white? Wtf. I mean, the movie was aweful, but black panther himself was cool.

I'm white and my favourite Disney characters were Pocahontas, Mulan, and Robin Hood. Not one of those characters was a white female - and one was a fox.
Apparently that's cultural appropriating now. It is a joke, people represent people is how it should be.

Race swaping a character for the sake of inclusion is insulting to both ethnicities involved. They're basically saying that the original white characters are either worthless, bad or defective and it needs to change and that the black race being use as a substitute doesn't have original heroes or historical characters worth exploring and that the only way for them to be worthy of attention is to give them the character/positions of previously established white characters.
It's teaching a generation to be racist. Limiting who you can identify with based on skin color will only cause harm. Tolkien is so popular because anyone can identify with and have empathy for his characters, due to their values, traits and actions, not their appearances. Race swapping is the opposite of what MLK envisioned.

And after killing every single dwarf, and still hearing her horrible screeching, the balrog just commits auto kill.
Nah, the Balrog falls in love with her and we get a love triangle. Because there is always a love triangle.

"You can't judge it off the marketing materiel!" That's.... that's *literally* what the marketing material is for. To sell you by presenting it in the best possible light. If it looks like a trash fire in the best possible light, holy shit.
How many more years of shows and movies devoid of any values where sex is presented as love and violence as bravery do we need to still hope in front of all evidence to the contrary?

I'm so excited for this show.
To the people who say you can’t judge something that’s not out yet…The entire point of releasing trailers for things is so people can form opinions on the product prior to it coming out. The studio obviously is hoping for you to get excited and generate hype for the show but the opposite can happen like for this dumpster fire. If you don’t want people to judge something prior to its release then what’s the point of marketing and trailers?
Those people are socialists attempting to enslave people mentally
The purpose of marketing is to hype up the consoomers, and if anyone complains about something have those same consoomers go after them.
Remember that guy who cried over nothing watching the Rise of Skywalker trailer... Fcking soy boys.
that look very feminist BS, i dont want to watch it
At least KitKat has their faces in the package.
One of my favorite films is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I thought the characters very relatable the story well told and compelling. At no time during the film do I stop and think, wait there's no white people in this. How can I possibly be enjoying this story when none of those people look like me. The whole point of fantasy entertainment is using your imagination to be someone else. Not to imagine that someone else is you. That changes the genre from fantasy to narcissism.
Best post to explain that stupid "representation" nonsense! Thanks :).
My surname may be Chinese sounding but I'm no Chinese. I love Xianxia films especially those that are well made and I don't even look at the person's skin color. Those people pandering towards race are usually the most racist out there. Hell, I got even called "white washed" for not liking this show. 😂
When I was a kid The Jeffersons, Good Times and Sanford and Son were new shows on TV (yep, I'm an old fart) but I guess since they were about black families my family shouldn't have watched and enjoyed them. Except for the Jeffersons, the other shows were about poor people, which is what made it relatable to us. I didn't care for The Brady Bunch, they were rich and had rich people problems I couldn't relate to.
“The whole point of fantasy entertainment is using your imagination” Yes. But in this case, it’s somebody’s world(Tolkien) so it suppose to be as close as we can get to his imagination. Not ours. If you don’t like his world. Just build your own world or find another world to imagine. And for Crouching Tiger thing, the story is set in 17th-19th century China and those characters are suppose to be Chinese. Why would you cast European or African to be Chinese? If you do that, isn’t it seem out of place?Or you can’t find any Asian Asian enough to be Asian? I’m Asian and I don’t like it either when a character is suppose to have certain appearances but play by an actor/actress without that appearances. And this might sounds racist but yes, skin color included. Sometimes it can be ignore but most of the time it just can’t. It just too much.
I can imagine someone saying that it's different for BIPOCS because they've been historically oppressed by whites in the Americas, Australia, Europe, and Africa, and so BIPOCS seeing people on screen who look like them is more important to them than it would be for a white person who hasn't been living through the same kind of oppression. Of course this would ignore the subjectivity of concepts such as "oppression," and the fact that the validity of the white privilege concept has not been established or enshrined in law. But the cultural movers and shakers behind the new Amazon show will act as if this is a settled question, and will act like it's beyond question that European civilizations produced more evil than good, and they'll find Tolkien's mythology problematic and in need of revision, filled as it is with European culture.
That being said, it's not comfortable being an ethnic minority. When your ethnicity isn't everywhere to be seen, when it's not writing the laws or otherwise calling the shots, when you don't share the heritage and culture of your neighbors, it can feel very uncomfortable -- so uncomfortable that I think some people confuse it for oppression. Children raised as ethnic minorities can feel like there's something different about them, something not normal, they may have a hard time fitting it, they may feel like they don't conform to standards of beauty, they may find it hard to identify with anyone, even members of their own ethnicity. Being the foreigner, and especially being raised as a foreigner, is not healthy, and is contrary to how humans evolved and how their societies have evolved. I include American blacks into this "foreigner" category, because so many of them apparently identify more strongly with their ethnic group than they do with their country. So in a way they are still a subject people being forced to conform to laws that were never written with their cultures in mind. They and other minorities that have strong in-group preferences and cultures at odds with the dominant culture (and with the legal system influenced by that culture) are oppressed to the extent that they're not being allowed or encouraged to develop as separate nations within those geographic areas. Or maybe they shouldn't be there in the first place.
All that being said, although it sucks being a minority, the sustainable, peaceful answer to that suckage isn't engaging in cultural vandalism or in the myriad other follies that will only enflame tensions.
How could he've been such a mega fan of LotR if he wasn't represented?
Isn't this a kind of... well... contradictory statement?
That pile of crap has never seen them nor read the books. I bet NONE of them have, not even the directors.
Thought the exact same. It's a BS maneuver to cover his ass from criticism.
"I want to change Tolkien's work because I didn't feel represented.. but Im totally a major fan of Tolkien's work you guys. So any changes I make to it, you have to agree with because totally legit fans like me like these changes."
Given that in another interview he expressed pleasure to have "erased" (actual word used) Tolkien's characterisation I doubt he was ever any sort of fan.
That's what he meant - that people like him who are self-contradictory, full of self-righteousness. victimhood and steeped in 'wokeness' weren't represented. Mostly because the original trilogy was produced before this avalanche of idiocy overtook our culture. I saw a video that reviewed the movie Sixteen Candles from the lens of such a person. It was impossible to finish watching.
As long as Amazon pays them these "actors" will do whatever theyre told. One could say they have no fault on this mess, but theyre on amazon's payroll, so that makes them accomplices, and theyll go down in history as lackeys of money, and not as the activists they call themselves
I am a talking ambulatory tree and was thrilled to see myself represented so authentically in the movies. No orc, hobbit, wizard, elf, witch king, balrog, or potato should be denied the same right!
Well, I sexually identify as an attack helicopter, I guess there's just nothing in this silly ty show for me!
It almost feels silly at first to be so upset as I am about how Amazon are doing things. Being proven right when you want to be wrong is a rough feeling. I agree with you completely. They shit the IP bed and they should be fucking ashamed of themselves. It wouldn't even be difficult to make a faithful adaptation, it's literally ALL right fucking there on paper and has been for decades.
Peter Jackson changed and added stuff too. Swapping out Glorfindel for Arwen, adding the elves during the Battle of Helm's Deep. But those changes really helped tell the story on film. We get to know Arwen and Aragorn's relationship better, having the elves during the battle was a nice bit of solidarity between the two races, echoing the Battle of the Last Alliance. If Jackson had turned Frodo into a trans Asian 14 year old girl, that'd be absolutely abhorrent.
Jackson made stupid changes as well such as making Denethor idiot and Faramir simpleton, both characters are intelligent and wise in the book.
Rop making sure white guys are bad guys. They should make sauron an african female
@@Asterix958 True, very true. But at least Jackson's movies overall still felt very Tolkien-esque and honored his legacy for the most part. So far I don't think I've seen a scrap from Rings of Power that incites any Tolkien related feeling.
The scene with arwyn was great but it was wrong, that was glorfindels scene. And the elves do come to man aid but not at helms deep but with Aragon in return of the king , and they are fighting there own battles , and the Aragon and arwen stuff is in the appendix ( the tale of Aragon and arwen) and he made other changes often bad changes. And believe me plenty of people complained.
PJ accounted for inconsistencies in the Trilogy Movie.. Arwen and Aragorn didn't do things no one else did, they did things as a stand in for Glorfindel.
The Elves didn't assist man at Helm'd Deep but they did so nonetheless.
THAT'S what made PJ's Trilogy palatable. He didn't bring anything new, he just tried to make things work.
Amazon is bringing in INACCURACIES.
There's a big difference.

I always thought Christopher Tolkien's criticisms of the Peter Jackson film were ridiculous, but honestly seeing the Hobbit and now this I'm beginning to think he had a point. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was certainly a more popularised and action heavy version of the story, but in my opinion it still effectively captures the heart of the books (surfboarding on shields aside). But as it's gone on we've strayed further and further from that core excellence that makes the Lord of the Rings unique, and more and more into "the absurdity of our time".
IMO the only real thing wrong with the Hobbit - tho folks would disagree, wanting a rendition of the original short book - was Jackson's female elf love. Even Tauriel as a created character would have worked, if Jackson had toned down the romance nonsense and kept her more of a warrior. And focused more on the dwarf relationships, and Beorn. Still, IMO Smaug remains the greatest dragon ever put on screen, and characters like young Bilbo, Thorin, Thranduil, Bard, the Master, and the White Council were beautifully done. I keep thinking of Thorin and the dwarves singing in Bag End contrasted with the lineup of dwarves in nightgowns standing around like they're at a New Year party.
@@twilitetide 100% Smaug is fantastic, and there's lots of great moments in the Hobbit. However, I think a lot of the issues stem from the fact that it's a trilogy when it just didn't need to be that long. Two films would have been more than enough. I've watched some fan edits that cut down on the run time so it's closer to the length of two feature films and it's significantly better, although still not close to the quality of the Lord of the Rings.
Christopher Tolkien had the foresight to see what Lotr would become, and here we are.

Game of Thrones is EXACTLY what they wanted to create. They've said so! And we know they've hired on-set consultants to help actors with their nudity. So expect lots of on-screen sex, too, which they haven't teased at all.
There is no sex in the books of Tolkien. None. What so ever. Sex in Tolkienworld is a rape of the story. Sex is an essential part of GOT. It is essential to the world building. Making Galadriel a sword wielding warrior chicken is a downgrade from Tolkien's Galadriel or even Peter Jackson's Galadriel. She's a queen with magic powers who didn't need to touch a weapon.
Claiming turning her into a warrior chicken is a girl boss move is like claiming making Eisenhower and Montgomery tank commanders is way more powerful than them commanding armies.

That's what a I dont understand. How tf can they turn her into some mortal warrior when she literally banished Sauron back to the shadow realm with her powers. What tf will a measly sword do for her.
Well even Gandalf was handy with a sword from time to time. The concepts are not completely opposed. But I think Tolkien, being an actual soldier, would find the idea of a female warrior to be largely ridiculous, however. It's no fault of women, but generally they are just not as strong as men, so a woman wearing heavy armour and trying to hack with a blade at something is just going to be terrible, by and large. And on a field of battle, if you have a weakling next to you it is DANGEROUS. The show does not present us with steroid Galadriel, so we can only assume we are in the bizarre feminist universe where women are just magickally better than men and still magickally oppressed by men for no reason whatsoever.
Galadriel can use a sword if she wants, and if they decided to give her some cool action moments I'd be ok with it, since this is going to be a long show and they kind of have to have some original stuff, which I'm fine with. But the original stuff looks terrible, and Galadriel is apparently leading an army, which is SO completely different from what she's like, and this Galadriel is nothing like the ethereal Galadriel that basically bewitches Gimli with her beauty and grace. She doesn't have that piercing gaze that Cate Blanchett had. Nothing is right and she's nothing like the original character (and saying she's young and naive doesn't work, she's 5,000 years old and elves generally mature at any age between 50 and 100.
@@HerculesBallsInc Women are physically less stronger than men and that is a fact. I am not being racist here. That's why 99.99% of all wars were fought by men in History.

My favorite part was when Galadriel and Elrond stopped to grab some coffee and she says to him; “We're sitting here like a couple of regular fellas. You do what you do. I do what I gotta do. What happens if I am there and I got to put you away? I won't like it. But, if it's between you and some poor bastard whose wife you're going to make into a widow, brother, you are gonna go down.” Chills!

@@JoesCornerstadios Maybe, but honestly I would rather give it to Korea. After watching Along with The Gods, I'd trust them with just about anything.
Aspiring author here myself so I'd like to give you some advice I got from a published author. If you get your book published it doesn't give you the rights to have any say in how it's adapted into a movie. Anyone can write a screenplay based on any novel and sell it to a production company that can make it into the movie that they want and the author or publishing company can do nothing about it. They are two different types of copy writes. To cover yourself you have to write your own screenplays and register them with the Writers Guild of America West, which means you have to join and initial cost is $2,500, plus other fees and dues. Once you do then a production company would have to buy the screenplay from you in order to use it for a movie or series. Once you sell them the screenplay they are free to write the scripts however they see fit and make any changes they want, and the end result could be drastically different from the original story. So unless your book becomes a huge bestseller and you can make millions off of it and leverage that money into becoming a producer on the project you will have no creative control over it. Best of luck!

I do think that most LOTR fans will watch 1-2 episodes and flush it if it turns out as bad as it is looking. I mean...between gender/race-swapping, tons and tons of fake "diversity check-box" character selections, complete fabrications/made up story arcs (warrior galadriel, established canon characters made up with stuff that completely never happened), and just letting your actors spew intersectional politics, crazy-bullshit politics during press interviews, etc. and the fake "superfan" movies which were neither "super" nor real "fans" as watching their eyes go blank when asked/talking about some of the most simplest questions of the series as they clearly didn't know anything about the stories. It's just sad, sad, and more sad. And of course...predictably; they've followed the Disney+ model of pre-emptively calling all people who take exception of the destruction of established characters, storylines, and utter disregard of the "story and canon" as racists, misogynists, and all other forms of "ists" and proclaiming everyone "toxic" and referring to them as the "toxic fandom."
You know...when you have a built-in IP (intellectual property) with a built-in fan base, all you have to do is keep one thing in mind. Just one. GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT without interjecting your personal ideas of social engineering, politics, -isms, "diversity", and "updating themes/stories/characters of this specific and beloved mythology for the modern age." FFS.

Remember, the same people that are subverting/blackfacing original caucasian characters are the same people that say that readers can only be inspired and see themselves in characters of the same skinn color. That is why they are putting aside caucasian characters by replacing them with hollow characters of other ethnicity/colorfacing; because in their minds it will lead to caucasian childrens to fell de-franchised and not be inspired by heroes to do the rigth thing and feel empowered and do something productive with their lives.

Sure the show hasn't come out yet but what we have seen and heard doesn't give us a lot of confidence. Condescending a 3 millennia age drastically, creating characters like a sister to the established family of Elendil, making Elrond apparently a clueless mansplainer, deleting Celeborn, a royal Numenorean family with extra created characters, Harfoots being proto-hobbits and nomadic farmers, and Galadriel not being Galadriel makes many think this just ain't Tolkien. And nomadic farmers? How the hell does that work? Is that just saying they are running around stealing the crops of farmers?

Now I'm just depressed. Another good reason I didn't renew my Prime membership. At least I have the Alan Lee illustrated hardcover of the trilogy, the extended editions of the PJ films (LOTR trilogy), 'Return of the King' pc game, & the LOTRO MMORPG (which is also far truer to the spirit & sense of Tolkien & Middle Earth, even with lots of original characters & content).
