The only thing I hate about the update is the fact they patched a skip that allowed you to skip the worst puzzle in the entire game which was the poster puzzle in “back alley” otherwise it is a good update

I also think as cool of a skip as it is, they don’t have to feel obligated to keep it in. It’s their own game after all, they don’t have to leave in a major skip if they don’t want it there

It's weird to go from 1.1.8 to 2.0, especially when the changed content is only enough to be called version 1.2 (especially since you could definitely argue this is just 1.1.9, considering a lack of new major content). Just compare Terraria 1.3 to 1.4, that's night and day. Going to 2 is reserved for either a total overhaul or, you know, a sequel.
What some developers don't understand is that most update numbers are separated into 3 (but sometimes 4) sections- Major, Minor, and Patch. Major updates are intended to be rarely used unless something core to the game is so drastically affected that it feels like a whole new game. Minecraft's 1.0 update was the introduction of an official end to the game, final boss and all. It gave you something to progress towards, even if the way you got there are what you did after it was ultimately left as an exercise to the reader. It has never again received an update that Mojang has been willing to call "2.0". Minor updates, despite their name, don't actually mean small changes. They just mean changes that are significant, but don't fit the requirements of a major update. Patches are exactly what they sound like- small balance changes to loot tables, difficulty, and bug fixes. These usually don't add any kind of new content, but can if it's content that was already intended to be part of a minor update but simply didn't make the release window, or alternatively are small quality of life changes requested by players (See Phasmophobia's 9.0 patches for an example. They made the tier 1 DOTS placeable, as well as a commemorative plaque showing legacy players' levels. All just small things that should or could have been part of the minor or major update prior)
And then there's the Linux kernel, where the numbers get changed when Torvalds feels like it.
I have a question, since you mentioned the "sometimes 4" in regards to how many sections an update number might have, but didn't really talk about it further; would the 4th point be for something like a hotfix, or is it something else that I'm not thinking of? Genuinely want to know the answer to this, as I'm looking to be a game dev in the near future, and I think it would be good to have this knowledge.
@@ShadowFoxx3120 Technically most of what I've said isn't a HARD rule, but it is a general thing that should be followed for the sake of common understanding between users of the software or game.
You can get away with a 3 point system just fine like Minecraft does, where the values represent major, minor, and patch just like I mentioned above, but as long as you don't stray TOO wildly away from this as a general set of guidelines, you can really number it however you want. In other words, software that uses a 4th number in the update value will use it differently from developer to developer, so you can either use it to identify extra info such as the version of a modding API if your game has one built-in, or you can separate balance reworking updates from bug fixing updates if you want, or you can use it for something entirely else or omit it fully as well.
Just remember to keep in mind that if your version increases from 1.X.X.X to 2.X.X.X, the update should feature a change so big that it essentially results in the inability to downgrade to a previous version without corrupting the save file or deleting content (such as trying to downgrade from a later version of Minecraft to a previous one. Either some items and blocks will be reverted or deleted, or the game will outright crash).
Another thing to keep in mind is that Mojang largely treats it's SECOND update number as the major value, and the third value kind of combines minor and patch together. But, in turn, they also make use of snapshot numbers in the form yy-W-ww-V where yy is replaced by the last 2 digits of the current year, W is kept in the update as-is, ww is replaced by the current week out of 52 in the year we're on, and V is replaced by a letter (starting from A) that increases for each snapshot in that week. So the most recent snapshot was 23W35A, for the first snapshot released in the 35th week of 2023. So as you can see, there are many ways to indicate version numbers aside from the traditional value, just as long as the users of the app clearly understand a consistent pattern between each version, you're probably fine.
So what you've described is called "semantic versioning". It's only one versioning style, developers are allowed to do whatever they want, unfortunately. It also applies more to libraries or APIs (things that other people's code want to interact with) to signal that a "major" update would have breaking changes (i.e. if you update to this version of our library, you will have to change your code to work with it). The general idea is that the second number means there are new features but they are optional and your code will still work if you don't use them, and the third number means there was a bug that has been fixed.
That's all relevant for Libraries, not so much for Games. A game is the final product, other people's code won't interface with it, so the version numbers don't really matter for signaling things like those breaking changes. For Games and Applications like that, version numbering is kind of a wild west situation, entirely up to the developers' discretion. So it's not "incorrect" that they called this update 2.0, even though for a lot of people it set the wrong expectation. If it were me, I absolutely would've called it 1.1.
@@leggettc18 Yeah, that's fair enough, but just because they don't have a reason they NEED to follow the consistent numbering, doesn't mean there isn't a reason they SHOULD follow it, which brings us back to this point exactly. In fact, there are some cases where games DO actually need to justify numbering systems like this, namely games that support modding tools in the base game itself (such as Minecraft with datapacks and addons, despite the fact that Minecraft and many other games like it still opt to use a SEPARATE version number for their mod tool versions, rather than basing it on the game version like would be so much more obvious to do).
2.0 would be a good update number if they added a whole new level or something, not just updating minor things in levels, adding some extra lights, patching a few bugs, and adding animations to the gallery.

Heavily nerfing the AI is a super welcome change, now all they have to do is add multiple difficulty settings that tune the AI accordingly and they'll be golden, of course I'd prefer if they removed the instant detection for a gradual one on the default difficulty but even that wouldn't help for things like old Funtime Freddy, some more tuning is required is all I'm saying and it can be optional :)

The most vile thing about this game is the screen shake.
Screen shake has never been a good thing in ANY GAME it's just a huge headache inducer.

I don't think this is really justified, I feel like 2.0 is just like "yeah I'm happy with it and I'm done changing it" Atleast how I would structure it I would go 1.0 for initial release 1.x for content updates 1.xx for patches and 2 for the final product when I'm done updating.

Its tough being a free game dev, people will expect the world from them for free and hype themselves up to the point of dissapointment.
I think they decided on 2.0 since there were massive changes that go beyond the small adjustments of previous updates, so it makes sense to me to move to a full version up.

Coming from an old af engineer: version numbers are just numbers, and you shouldn't imply anything from them unless told otherwise. The only thing 1.1.8 to 2.0 implies is that it's not 1.1.8 anymore.
thats just not true, gamejolt specifies when uploading a file that the first number means major patch (new content, dlc, etc), then minor (balance changes, animation updates, etc), then patch (bug fixes). They mean a lot
