I cry everytime I hear this song. It gets me right in the heart. My Mother was my life and when she died I had to empty out her house and give away her belongings. So hard to do but Carly sums it up pretty well. I had the pleasure of meeting Carly in person and I gave her a hug and told her how much her music meant to me. She was so gracious and beautiful.
My mom passed on just three days ago. Gosh it hurts. This beautiful song is helping. I'm in her house by myself with her little dog for now. My brother and sister in law will be here in a couple of days. We'll make our plans and do the things you see in this wonderful video, clean and eventually sell the house too. But for these two days I want to cherish my mom, memorize the wonderful neat way she lived, really look at all the pictures and the sentimental things she kept. This song will be playing often in her home for these two days -- thank you Carly.
I lost my mom in 2009 and I had this song put to pictures of our lives with my soft and amazing mom! I just lost my sister A couple of weeks ago and would love to play it for my sisters children at the celebration of life!
Thank you so very much for this loving and moving tribute to you mother, Carly Simon. Any daughter whose mother has gone identifies with your words and your feelings.
Inez de Melo I heard this song ten years ago right after my only sisters passing while I was riding in my car. I thought of my niece. But almost two years ago, I lost my mother. And now this song is very personal to me. I cry when I listen to it. I miss you Sylvia and mommy, my heart hurts so very much.
Carly has played the soundtrack of my life. Just heard this for the first time today. My Mom will be gone 6 years next month. I can't wait to see her again.
Long before my mother passed, she handed me a cassette tape with this song on it and said she’d like it played at her funeral. We did play it (on a smart phone), and it brought such comfort to me and my sister. The song still makes me cry (who gets over losing their mother, after all - she was my best friend) but I am sure she is waiting for me.
I have disabled daughter, Im 84, and feel this is a song she would sing if she could. She has moved into a group home for her future care as I am aging, and needed to assure she was cared for when I no longer on this planet. When I heard this song, I imagine, this is what she would think. It touches my heart. Sóooo beautiful Thanks Carly
I've always thought I would like to sing this song for my Mother when her time comes..... but, damn, I can't get through the chorus without bawling. And that's in the comfort of my own home and my Mother is still alive.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing and performing this beautiful and meaningful song! It helps me get through the grief of losing my mother . You are a very special artist!
This has brought tears to my eyes and is also uplifting as she comes to terms in a positive way with her mom not being around anymore. Very moving and the bass line is again simply gorgeous
I love this song. My mother is on hospice and this song reminds me of that. Soon she will take her journey to heaven. To all mothers who have passed. Good job Carly!
my mom is gone and my sister took my moms jewelry.. all i want now since my dad passed is my moms piano.. for they have each of them a piano . I will just have to deal with my losses and listen to this.. it is very healing
“Like a River” (1994) is a devastatingly beautiful tribute to Andrea Heinemann, Carly Simon’s mom, who passed on February 15, 1994. “I’ll wait no more for you like a daughter That part of our life together is over But I will wait for you forever Like a river” Soon after, Carly would author “Touched By The Sun” (1994) as a heart-wrenching homage to her close friend, Jackie Kennedy Onassis*, who died on May 19, 1994. ❤️🩹🎼❤️🩹 * Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis (née Bouvier) served as the First Lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, as the wife of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
May God Bless you Carly and the beautiful music you sing. Your our last beautiful songbird on this cold earth were people would rather look into their cell phone all day and talk to no one and miss this beautiful God given earth go by. I lost my mom in 2011 and brothers before. I thought I would die planning my mother's funeral alone. I'm 59 now in 2018 and my shrink says I'm not in depression after all these years but I'm still in grief. I play this beautiful song 20 times a day and still miss her. I would love to meet you one day before it's my turn. Thank God for my 3 little shih-tzu s. And your beautiful music! Richard Burton Galena Park.Texas
Love this, Carly. It reminds me of my mom. We lost her in January 2010. Thank you for this tender song about loss, love and grieving. You are a blessing.
I'm so sorry to hear about all the people in this comment section who dedicate this song to the relationship they shared between themselves and their mothers. It's so sad and I'm really sorry for everyone who lost their mother or anyone else who was really close to them. I haven't lost my mother yet thank God but my mother used to play this song for her mother whom she lost when she was only 18 years old and her mother was just 45 years old. Both were way too young and I just cry every time I hear this song because I couldn't imagine losing my mother and I really feel for all those who lost their mother or a loved one. God bless everybody in this comment section and all over the world.
God bless you Carly... Absolutely breathtaking. This February marked the 47th anniversary of my moms passing. I vaguely remember her, but when I see your smile, I see her and feel her.
@@carlosfazio9825 the only thing worse is a lose is a child. I lost one and my mom my dad and they division of the house is painful. but life has to go on
Thank you Carly for your perspective. I Love this song!! ..my momma has been gone from us for over 8yrs now. The words have reminded me that we will someday become reunited in heaven. Until then, I will Always wait for her, like a river..
10 years ago we played this song at my grandmother's funeral, and it was the breaking point for my 10 year old self. I just sobbed for an hour straight.
"Like A River" Dear mother the struggle is over now And your house is up for sale We divided your railway watches Among the four of us I fought over the pearls With the other girls But it was all a metaphor For what is wrong with us As the room is emptying out Your face so young comes into view And on the back porch is a well-worn step And a pool of light that you can walk into I'll wait no more for you like a daughter, That part of our life together is over But I will wait for you, forever Like a river... Can you clear up the mystery of the Sphinx? Do you know any more about God? Are you dancing with Benjamin Franklin On the face of the moon? Have you reconciled with Dad? Does the rain still make you sad? Last night I swear I could feel you Moving through my room And I thought you touched my feet I so wanted it to be true In my theater there is a stage And a footlight you can always step into... I'll wait no more for you like a daughter, That part of our life together is over But I will wait for you, forever Like a river... In the river I know I will find the key And your voice will rise like spray In the moment of knowing Tide will wash away my doubts 'Cause you're already home Making it nice for when I come Like the way I find my bed turned down Coming in from a late night out. Please keep reminding me Of what in my soul I know is true Come in my boat, there's a seat beside me And two or three stars that we can gaze into... I'll wait no more for you like a daughter, That part of our life together is over But I will wait for you forever Like a river...
I first heard this song on the dvd Carly Simon Live At Grand Central 6 months ago. I really love this song, I sent this song to my daughter and its the first time her hearing it. It reminded me of her and her mom talking about the wedding ring I gave her and how she wants it when her mom passes, but promised it to another daughter. For my daughter this song won't be forgotten.
So much anguish listening to this song- so beautiful... wishing I could have had a loving mom- I don't know why but I still carry the scars on my skin and in my indelible memories...mom for me was more like "The Wall" from Pink Floyd only with the Twilight Zone mixed in. God Bless all the good and loving Mothers out there!
I have no idea what made me think of this song but I'm glad I did. I remember being a kid and my mother playing this because she had the CD. It always made me cry hearing it. This song is soooooo freaking sad, oh my gosh.
Unfortunately, heart-wrenching words that can describe the opposite relationship, waiting . . ."Like a Mother". I know my beautiful adult daughter is Home. River analogy is beautiful, w/ much solace. Thank you for sharing.
The great thing about Carly is her ability to write music, sing beautifully, and the clarity of her voice, every word is concise, unlike much of the garbled garbage you here today.
I want to read these bad people so I can respond how do I read them this song means so much to me and my passed mom who lost her mom young I lost my mon 2.5 years ago..
My own mother got sick last year, and because I was also sick, In could not fly there to see her. She died in March, and I could not go (Covid). This song takes me to the same place Carly went when she wrote it.
I appreciate Carly's tributes to her mom. It's a very special relationship and she knows it. Mine was, as well. This is a beautiful performance and the photos are perfect. God bless moms!! 😘

There are thousands of boy-girl love songs, while songs dedicated to mothers are far too rare. This song is simply beautiful.

I’ve been a Carly fan since I first heard her in the early 80s. I was born in 78. This is a moving and meaningful song.
Lost my mom Thursday, suddenly, and discovered this song. It is beautiful.
I miss my mom so much. This made me cry.
It has been 26 years since my mom passed away... and I miss her so much. Bless you Carly for your kind words
love and hugs
Happy mother's day, Mary Ann. This song always makes me think of you and when you left us too soon.
My eldest daughter, I have three, and I have decided this will be played at my funeral. Listening now still gives me goosebumps
Idk how artists perform songs like this without losing it. I’ve never heard this song without tearing up at the part “I’ll wait no more”
Beautiful . Made me cry . Think of my mom .
She’s gone now
My mother used this as a meditation at her mother's memorial service in 2000. I have never forgotten this song since.
This song is beautiful how Carly remembers her mom how they show photos of them during Carly’s childhood.
I love this song. My mother is on hospice and this song reminds me of that. Soon she will take her journey to heaven. To all mothers who have passed. Good job Carly!

"Like A River"
Dear mother the struggle is over now
And your house is up for sale
We divided your railway watches
Among the four of us
I fought over the pearls
With the other girls
But it was all a metaphor
For what is wrong with us
As the room is emptying out
Your face so young comes into view
And on the back porch is a well-worn step
And a pool of light that you can walk into
I'll wait no more for you like a daughter,
That part of our life together is over
But I will wait for you, forever
Like a river...
Can you clear up the mystery of the Sphinx?
Do you know any more about God?
Are you dancing with Benjamin Franklin
On the face of the moon?
Have you reconciled with Dad?
Does the rain still make you sad?
Last night I swear I could feel you
Moving through my room
And I thought you touched my feet
I so wanted it to be true
In my theater there is a stage
And a footlight you can always step into...
I'll wait no more for you like a daughter,
That part of our life together is over
But I will wait for you, forever
Like a river...
In the river I know I will find the key
And your voice will rise like spray
In the moment of knowing
Tide will wash away my doubts
'Cause you're already home
Making it nice for when I come
Like the way I find my bed turned down
Coming in from a late night out.
Please keep reminding me
Of what in my soul I know is true
Come in my boat, there's a seat beside me
And two or three stars that we can gaze into...
I'll wait no more for you like a daughter,
That part of our life together is over
But I will wait for you forever
Like a river...
