Mme Lagarde sees the IMF fighting inequalities? She is one to talk. For decades the IMF was beset with neoliberal doctrines and did everything it could to any country receiving aid to impose those neoliberal politics on them. It forced those countries to open up and all but the strongest in society were fair game. The IMF created inequality on a massive scale starting in Chile after 1973.

    • @nataschavisser573

Yes, they were feared and loathed all over the developiing world. Their policies was massively harmful in the 1980s and 1990s. IMF austerity measures whiped out decades of developmental progress in education and health in African countries and created political instability. As far as I know, Legarde did a lot to reform the IMF so that it contains a greater diversity of economic thinking today than it did before. Trevor should have questioned her on this.

Chilean inequality has fuck all to do with the IMF lmao. The IMF has been instrumental in reducing poverty around the whole world, there's a reason why the number of people in poverty has gone down from roughly 55% in the 50s to to around 10% now. You can't grow an economy when you limit yourself off to the world or don't have an independent central bank, the IMF has been instrumental in creating both of those conditions around the world

They hate socialism, and I can guarantee the one they will elect against Donald Trump won’t be someone like Bernie Sanders, but a neoliberal capitalist instead like Biden or Harris...
It’s sort of like how En Marche could pass as "neither left nor right" because they were economic neoliberals, but they also appropriated useless leftist societal issues for themselves (like "inclusive writing" : "nous sommes honoré.e.s", "celles et ceux", ....) as if THAT would change anything ffs...

There is a large body of professional technical research going back 50 years, showing that the IMF "advice" has favoured global elites rather than the countries burdened with loans whose terms do not favour them. Christine Lagarde previously was France's Minister of Finance and as such was implicated in a case in which an MOF settlement was found to be too favourable to a French oligarch. I'm a bit surprised that Trevor never spoke about how IMF kept Africa poor for 60 years with racist loans to African countries where they charged 10 times the interest rates on loans to African countries than they did to other countries in the world. The Interests rates crippled African economies because they had to pay money to the IMF instead of investing in their own countries so the IMF were profiteering off the poverty in Africa. It took Bin Ladin to change things because George Bush and Tony Blair were so spooked by the terrorism after 9/11 that they were worried that there would be an African Bin Ladin if Africans discovered they were being kept poor by the IMF and western powers. So they ordered the IMF to cancel the racist loans to African nations in 2004 and since then Africa has the fastest growing economies in the world and the biggest rise in living standards now that African nations can invest their national resources into their own countries rather super high interest rates to the IMF. It is very disgusting how the IMF knew they were crippling African countries and did nothing to change this until the US and UK ordered them to stop profiteering of African poverty.

    Hi Trevor and team
You should have asked Mrs. Lagarde about what's known in France as "l'Affaire Tapie - Credit Lyonnais". As a finance minister of France, she decided to give Mr. Bernard Tapie in excess of ... wait for it, more than 420 millions euros in compensation because the state has, allegedly, hurt his business interest. Instead of rejecting the arbitration and going to courts, she just signed the check and hand it over. She was called later before a special court (set up for ministers) and got away with a tap on the wrist (she was already head of the IMF). The courts later on ruled that Mr. Tapie had to return the money. Not thanks to Mrs. Lagarde.

Take a loan from IMF and for the next few years they will tell you which laws to pass in your sovereign nation, how to apportion your budget as they see fit etc. China gives loans too, they dont interfere with your politics. All they want is to improve your infrastructure and make their money as well. The truth is that there is a brighter future with China than accepting the Greek gifts of the IMF. Half of it goes to the project and the other half is split between the Chinese contractors and your politicians. And the project is carried out using Chinese labour for which you pay triple the top global rate, all materials and equipment from China and they structure the deal so that they run the resultant project for decades till they get their money back with interest at a rate that is MUCH MUCH higher than anything the IMF would charge. The real reason African countries presidents have 'cast their lot with China' is coz they Chinese have no qualms wiring 250 million dollars to their personal accounts.

World is such in a bad shape that late night shows need to take serious topic to educate people: a good collateral effect if you ask me.

Unfortunately, what a lot of ppl don’t realize is that, the gender pay gap is affected by both the fact that many more women work part-time as men, and, individual salary negotiation, meaning men are more aggressive in negotiating their salaries. Only because a person will ask for a higher salary for a particular position, does not mean that the company will automatically pay that negotiated amount to the next person for the same position.
I am not saying there is no systemic gender pay gap that requires attention, but you also have to factor in these two points when analyzing absolute numbers.

He mentions IMF I immediately thought of conspiracy theories about lending money.
