    I can't badmouth Yngwie. He's cool enough to have allowed a buddy of mine come onto his tour bus after a show to give autographs. In the process, he asked Yngwie to call me on my cell phone and talk to me. Yngwie did! He was cool and funny, and downright funny. He may be cocky sometimes, but that's a pretty cool ass thing to do. He gets major props from me, especially as one of my guitar heroes of all time.

  • @jimmyjimjam
    @jimmyjimjam 8 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    I like how he adapted the solo for his own style. Malmsteen and Gilbert have completely different picking techniques. Malmsteen is a downward pick slanter and uses economy picking to switch strings at speed, Gilbert is a two way pick slanter and primarily uses alternate picking to cross strings at speed. They both have what works for them and for Gilbert to play a Malmsteen solo, he would need to rearrange the notes to suit his particular style and/or add in his own flavour and modify the solo to make things interesting - as he did here.

    • @gigatesla
      @gigatesla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does become more of a concern, but there are ways around it. Yngwie uses hammer-ons and pull-offs for switching after an odd number of notes. Breaks up the consistent attack a bit, which can be good or bad depending on the sound you want.

    • @yorugan1806
      @yorugan1806 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      lol when someone watches cracking the code and thinks he knows everything about pick mechanics. if youd analyze pauls playing more you would have noticed that instead of pure alternate picking (which he can use but hasnt done so since the 90s cuz of tone reasons) he uses an extremely perfect and efficient way of combined legato and picking which makes him able to play pretty much any song. also he can use yngwies style as seen in paul song y.r.o (yngwie rip off)

    • @nicksalvatore5717
      @nicksalvatore5717 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stefan Ilic Paul naturally has a downward pick slant, he does two way pick slanting but in his natural state it’s downward pickslanting

    • @yorulaney8563
      @yorulaney8563 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Salvatore that doesn't have anything to do with what I said. You are right but Paul stopped picking every note since the late 80s. He rarely uses 2 way pick slanting since he tends to do outside picking.

    • @brendanoneil3489
      @brendanoneil3489 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gigatesla Nailed it. Trilogy or example, both hammers and pick attack -fluid but tight. All this over-analysis maybe less relevant for adanced stylistic playing - that dfference is what sets them apart.

      Paul Gilbert wouldn't be able to play the original solo? Are we talking about the same Paul Gilbert?

    • @Narut0Kur0saki
      @Narut0Kur0saki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      clearly you dont know who youre talking about, paul and malmsteen are contemporaries of the same movement and peers no matter how you look at it, im sure he would have no problem playing the solo, but decided it would be more fitting to put his own spin on it

      Yngwie has one of the best vibrato's in the business. Wide, smooth and in tune.
      I hate it when people do a wide vibrato and the high part of the vibrato fall flat. God, that's almost as bad as slipping in your own vomit after a night on the beers.

    Musical interpretation is a mark of a true musician. Yngwie purists may not like this but Paul is showing his stylistic approach to this fantastic song ---and not simply trying to copy Yngwie's version. I too at first was critical until I realized the true point of his version. It's all GOOD! Paul is FANTASTIC! Not only a Great musician and guitar player but a true Fan of MUSIC! You can see it in his enthusiasm! We should all take note of that enthusiasm! At the end of the day- we play Guitar because we love the power of MUSIC! Can I get an Amen Bruther!

    Paul is just an all around guitar guy, I'm sure he knows everything about his instrument, inside and out, he seems like the kind of guy you can call on the phone and say let's do some jamming, he just really seems like a great guy.

    Paul Gibert has excellent technique and is great at playing covers but what has Paul Gilbert ever composed that is on the same level of quality as "Black Star", "Far Beyond The Sun", "Evil Eye", Trilogy Opus Suite 5", or "Icarus Dream Suite Opus 4"?

    • @StanFlahautAFD
      @StanFlahautAFD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Kendall2001 Plenty. As popular no, but every bit as good. Fuzz Universe, and of course his tribute to Yngwye "Viking Kong" to name a couple. There are many more IMO but Paul's bands never attained Yngwye's popularity.

      PG's technique is widely considered amongst elite level guitar players to be the cleanest in the game. His alternate picking is far superior to Malmsteens.

      Patrick Kim Check out some of Paul's earlier stuff, like on Flying Dog or Burning Organ, or even on Vibrato, some real class tunes on their that aren't typically widdlydiddly.

      So in other words, you like neoclassical better than what Paul plays. I don't mind your opinion, but they are both masters at what they do.
      Paul can and has done anything and everything, and Yngwie is a true master of the neoclassical art (maybe even the best at it). I would struggle to actually compare the two, because they are two totally different musicians. The only real comparison IMO is that they both love to play fast, but you are always allowed to form your opinions on who you prefer.

      Dtyler171 i about how play not what they play yngwie have better intonation...better bendings better vibrato and he was one of gilbert inspiration...so yngwie es is the one...end of story.
