    "any genre you play, blues helps you playing it better.
    It's funny when I ear a metalhead saying that blues is easy, 'cause actually it's a really sophisticated style, with a lot of harmonic freedom. Since when I play blues, my metal playing got better too." Paul Gilbert

    The hate Paul is getting is undue. This was a quick video of him briefly explaining why his sound transitioned from speed metal (Racer X) to blues rock (Mr. Big, his recent solo material, etc). I love metal. What makes metal or hard rock interesting to me? Jazz/blues-influenced experimental stuff like Animals. Prog like older Dream Theater. Jazz fusion acts like Greg Howe. Paul would 100% agree with all of you that metal is much deeper than "going up and down scales" and his statement wasn't him defining metal as an absolute. Again, he's just briefly stating why HIS sound went from "going up and down scales" aka conventional heavy metal or "shred" (what he was known for) to the stuff he enjoys more doing now, and that's totally fine.

    It's just an opinion everyone. Don't get triggered by any guitarist's opinion about what is better. If you are a guitar player that still thinks in terms of "vs" then you still need time to decompress from all the competition that is circling around you. Everyone gravitates towards those genres which they emotionally connect with most.

    I'm a huge metal fan and have been playing guitar for 30+ years. What he said has a great point, and summed up in his last statement. "Whatever style you play, I think Blues will help make it better." Perhaps the last word in this statement should be "richer", but his point was not lost on me, where I see it has been on many of the commenters.

      Its funny because I started playing blues after improvising with Rumba Flamenca.
      Basically in Flamenco you have a tapado which is playing guitar percussively by muting strings with your fretting hand and for some reason I started playing "blues chords" (I flamenco we use alot of voicings) and it sounded as sort of funky blues. Thats how I started playing blues lol.

    I think it's important for all musicians to share their thoughts on various genres, especially when, in Gilbert's case, he's mastered them all. Metal scales can be a bit monotonous after a while and blues is, in my view, far more expressive because of the way it is played. But as an entire genre of music, metal is where one finds far more complex time signatures, chord progressions and creative composition, overall. Great interview.

    Warning! this comment section its pretty salty
    Im gonna give my honest opinion about it, this looks like the typical discussion of which genre is best, i always hate when people pigeonhole the music, and they do it just to say that his favorite genre is the best, did you see guitar solos and distortion and the importance of guitar in other genres?, without blues we wouldn't have metal, metal pretty much was heavy blues rock for most of the seventies until NWOBHM came along and speed everything up, i love the power of metal and the feeling of blues, and sometimes the tables turned, some metal bands has a lot of feelings and blues players has a lot of power.
    i love blues and i love metal.
    i hate listening to bends each 3 seconds aswell as i get bored of listening to 10 minutes of mindless shredding, Paul is clearly just giving his opinion with words like "to me" is obvious, you shouldn't take his toughts as the certain truth, he is just a normal person (although some would think so)

    • @samme79
      @samme79 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Which is his point... you can play sophisticated blues and it's still blues. That's the beauty of the blues because you can play it simply with pentatonic or you can play it with more. The simple harmonic pattern of the blues allows such freedom. But it's still blues at the end of the day and jazz is deeply rooted in the blues too

    People who exemplify bands like AAL or Periphery should realize that this video is probably very old judging by how Paul looks a lot younger than he looks nowadays. Those bands (who don't fit into Paul's generalizations here) were not around here when this video was recorded
    Besides, his point is not 'metal sucks', but rather, blues has much more room for creativity because it is not as scooped of a genre like metal is. Which I, as a relatively experienced player in both genres, would agree with hands down.

    • @dragchainreaction
      @dragchainreaction 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is Blues is so common in guitar that it can become stale, especially when people are stuck in pentatonic boxes. Metal and Blues have a common ground where you can mix both. That's the art. Add some Jazz fusion ideas and you have the holy grail.

      I mean that's the same with anything. Lack of vision and innovation will lead to stale and repetitive things. That's only only a problem of blues but also with metal and other genre, as well as in life. I agree with you though mostly in Blues, when you hear the guitar parts and they're stuck with pentatonic stuff mostly, I just groan and stop listening to it. That's why I love guys like Josh Smith, Eric Gales etc2 that incorporate a lot of outside stuff as well as Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and Julian Lage

    gilbert is a master technician, blues is not easy, people think so because of the the 12 bar pattern. and some of it is simple, but the good stuff is like paul says, it's almost jazzy, the bass all over the place skipping between positions, running separate patterns that fit with the drummer, and the guitar notes are so expressive it's not easy to replicate, you hear it, then try to play it you're like whoa, way more going on here than it sounds.

    I disagree with the notion that metal is harmonically limited.
    What i do agree with that metal when it comes to that metal still has to be explored in that avenue.
    The emotion of blues comes also from a different place than metal.
    And especially in the more agressive sounding metal, you can have some great riffs with emotion in it. (Vitriol is a good example)
    But it's not the kind of emotion most people look for in music, which is ok.

    true, blues DOES like helped influenced my style. I don't really play guitar solos but like, improvised singing, improvised guitar playing, and some licks maybe. not as guitar solo-ey since i'm an acoustic type of dude but regarding the expression and possibilities, really blues has helped. I've listened to all sorts of genres growing up and have landed up in Grunge/Psychedelic Stoner sounds as my comfort zone if not love songs and Blues really helps with my sound and the infusion of slow heavy metal sounds and stuff. Paul worded it well tbh!

    This speaks more to his mentality towards the genres then the genres themselves. Metal comes from Blues and each can be limiting or not depending on the musician and their knowledge of music theory/ear for the genre. I get bored of the blues but I know it's because of my ear for it. Metal, I would never try because I find practicing to play fast tedious but I would try to pigeonhole the genre because of my limited skill.
