Anyone working the heavy bag, film yourself. I thought I was doing everything right until I watched the playback, I was guilty of 90% of things mentioned in this video!
Yea you should film yourself every time if possible With anything you are performing watching your own video and improving what you see wrong will take you a long way
I improved a lot more when i did film watch try better film again watch try better film again and when youre satisfied starting with rounds this helped a lot more than first a couple of rounds and then filmed myself and saying "o i suck tomorow i do this better"
I have to write this comment. It is almost 2 years back from now when my life was not so good and my friend asks me if i dont want to try box. That was the time when my weight stops at maximum 124 kilograms. My first think was to look for some channel and i founded you - Precision Striking and when i had free time i had started to watch your videos to look for some begginer tips and when i see that what you say and show to me is helping me i was keep watching more and more. After 2 years of boxing my weight is on 90 kilograms and again you bring us this absolutely insane video. I have to tell this is one of the best video about training on heavy bag. Man what to say to you? You help me to improve my boxing, you help me to get my motivation back when my life was not so good and actualy you help to improve my life! And all just for follow and subscribe man. What other words to write you more? Hmm Simply in love Peter
I had my first sparring session and the coach said to me the exact same thing. I was not extending my punches especially my jab and was not snapping it as at the end. He said I picked up bad habits from the heavy bag. I was hitting with pit pat punches with speed but not effective. My sparring partner didn’t hit me hard and allowed me to hit him hard which was a very good experience in the ring for me. I have my first boxing match so thank you for this vid and wish me luck. I will try to benefit fully when using the heavy bag.
It’s at the end of October. It’s a charity event they match you up with someone your level. You Head gear and 16 oz gloves and it’s 3 two minute rounds. I’m only 52 KG But have decent power.
Guybrush Threepwood most people at that weight don’t have power so don’t worry about bout getting hurt just use the fight as a training tool to improve your technique and reactions. Good luck and have fun
I just finished my heavybag workout, Recorded it and looking for videos of heavybag mistakes and suddenly this video uploaded. *Feeling super lucky* Precision striking thank you so much 🙏🏼
Coach, just what I needed! A refresher on how to keep it clean on the heavy bag. Too easy to fall into these bad habits especially when your tired and don’t see yourself in a mirror. Thanks for keepin it real and brakin it down!
12:50 is hilarious!!! "Ah look at this! I can take a Nap" I love your videos man, i watch them and study and practice what you teach. I definitely see all these errors for myself, especially with Raising the Chin. Keep up the posts!
6:46 "It may take years before they discover this..." bahahah you are so right!! I started my boxing journey about 3 years ago coming from competing in bodybuilding and it took me a year + to learn to release at the end of the punch. I find this doubly amusing because I figure it out finally with shadow boxing/shoe shinning. Thanks for the great video man!
Great tips ! I am love boxing, but being a bit lazy I don't practice much, but now after watching your video, I am ready to start back up. I am guilty of that drop punch, but now that I am aware of it, I will remind myself to check my punches. Again great stuff, thanks.
I've been a subscriber for a while now and got into boxing at age 37. I'm going on 40 in a couple months and am now an addict. I can say without question, your channel has helped me learn more than any other. Thank you for all the amazing lessons and content!
JT, u are so correct when mentioning "discovering". For me, this is done mostly during shadow boxing. I'm more in tune of how I deliver a punch and what my body is actually doing.
BRUH!!! Let me tell you this is the first video I have watched from you. I’m looking for another form of cardio and trying to decide on boxing. Let me tell you that you are THE ONLY one who has assured me about diving into this. Thank you! Your lessons are so to the point and so complete. I never thought I would subscribe to a boxing channel but you will be the first!
When that ad popped up, my automatic reaction was frustration. But then I realised i am helping u out and now I want u to put more ads. U deserve it man!
Excellent video on the proper way to hit the punching bag. The Pre-loading of a punch segment is outstanding! I cannot tell you enough how many times that trainers in all the boxing gyms I was at never told their boxers anything about pre-loading their punches. I dropped boxers by watching them pre-loading their punches warming up and with that minor opening I would launch a counter which they did not see.
Love the videos, they really help out on those days when you are tired and just need some pop to get that work in. Looking forward to the headbands as well.
I like the way you explained it, working on heavy bag as far I knew about boxing, punching on a heavy bag was just a big waste of time because when I deliver my hook, I keep my elbow down and not keeping the lower chin also my distance wasn't calculated. Thanks for this video. It helps me developing my skills for boxing.
In Karate we hit with the first two knuckles because they are the strongest ones and we hit without gloves. But the defense in Karate is mostly only managed by distance. The defense in boxing is a good addition for a Karate guy. You are a very good teacher with a very clean technique. Love your videos.
If you focus on speed and technique the power will come, try too much for power early on and you'll only pick up habits that will be hard to break later. Love your stuff man!
This is soooo true, too much power before you can good form can cause injuries too, in the first 3 months of training I severely sprained my wrist and had to take 2 months off from a left hook with crappy form- not fun. And even if you do your beginner fights they typically ask you tone down the power and focus on making contact and scoring points (at least that's my experience).
Thank you so much. I've been following you for many years now and you bring everytime the same energy man! You're the best coach in YT and out there for real Thank you coach!
JT you've been an invaluable resource man. I eventually will get onto your site to patron, I appreciate this content. Thanks so much. I'm one month in to boxing so I've got a LONG way to go but my goal is to be a good boxer, and you have helped in that regards.
Keep in mind that striking with the smaller knuckles is fine in boxing when your hands are taped and you're wearing a big, padded glove. But, in a street-fight where you could hit bone, if you hit with those smaller knuckles you will likely break the small bones in your hand. It's hard to finish a fight with broken hands. That's why in karate they teach to only hit with the two larger knuckles and to toughen them up by doing push-ups on them. Plus, hitting with a smaller point concentrates all your power into a smaller spot and allows for deeper penetration. Whole hand hitting the liver - hurts like hell. One or two knuckles hitting the liver breaks a rib and drives it into the liver. Fight over.
Your a cool guy not alot of people mention letting your shoulder blade slide forward. Alot of weight lifters ehilst lifting keep their scapula back and down to prevent shoulder injury, and may as a result assumr when punching it should stay locked too
Thank you for this amazing channel, At 1:50, can I ask, the moment your fist touches the bag your wrist is slightly bent (?) -i.e on the vertical axis- when I hit my hook like this in full power I get a strained wrist so I'm forced to lift my elbow so it will be in the same level with the fist. But I think by hook is slower and telegraphed this way, any suggestions?
Being old and having lots of years of practicing and studying sweet science, I always learn something from your films, it says something either about me being poor at boxing or your films being great :)
How do you keep from dropping your guard when you are doing your uppercuts? I was just thinking about that the last time I was hitting the bag. If I'm throwing a 1,2 and then a 5. I feel like I'm always dropping my guard.
Thanks for share Teacher. Even does not speak english I like to much watch all your videos time and time again I pause it! I rewind it! And I "understand it" Lol. Thanks. Receive an hug from Angola.
This "release" that you talk about I know exactly what you mean but are there any videos on it or ways to practice/learn that release? Also your a great teacher. Much respect
I forgot I had the play speed turned up I was like holy shit this guy is crazy...oh wait lolol still awesome technique and knowledge though, thorough stuff
That release thing, been doing boxing for almost 1 year and just learned recently about that release. But i think thats the time when your muscles adjust to the punch
I love the heavy bag. If even all you do is 10 rounds per day, your whole body gets a full workout. Of course this subsumes one has progressed through requisite footwork training. In a year one would lose a lot of weight, develop and condition the fighting muscles, and believe it or not, increase strength and lifting power. No weightlifting required, but if you must, only do dumbbells, kettle weights and such. Trust me, it works. Thanks.
Should I always wrap my hands before heavy bag work? I'm 5'7, I don't really plan on competing because of my life style I can't commit to a gym. I will be working in remote locations. I mention this because I am not aiming to be in a weight division. I'm about 180lbs, and I used to compete at 157 in Taekwondo. Question, should I punch slightly up as I will most likely be fighting taller people, because I'm a little short? Is that viable? Or should I just work on straight arm punches? I want to learn boxing for self defense vs competition. I have very very minimum striking education, through TKD and also military service, but I suspect I've got a ton of bad habits. Looking for coaching...
Thanks for the video. Great as always . But for me its hard to " release" the hits because i had a surgery on the shoulder. I am allowed to go full power again, but still worrying about dislocating it again :/
Maybe if you train your shoulders more you would feel more comfortable. I had a similar problem with my wrist so I trained it way more. Now it's almost completely fine. Ask your trainer for some shoulder exercises if you still have that problem
Anyone working the heavy bag, film yourself. I thought I was doing everything right until I watched the playback, I was guilty of 90% of things mentioned in this video!

Best boxing channel on TH-cam. I love that you always emphasize proper diligent form in training. Quality over quantity.
what im seeing he's missing key body movements that create power strikes, so far im not that impressed
