Is a smartphone camera just as good as a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera?

  • As convenient as the camera in your pocket may be, a smartphone camera isn't capable of performing as well as a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Sure, a smartphone camera can look fantastic if you're taking a photo of something up close with minimal difference between the darkest and brightest spots in the image. Additionally, built-in portrait modes can make you feel like your phone's image is BETTER than your camera's, but don't let that fool you. A DSLR or mirrorless camera will ALWAYS beat out a smartphone camera.
    A full-sized camera has a much larger sensor, which benefits you in two ways:
    First, the larger sensor will perform much better in shooting conditions with high dynamic range. As landscape photographers, this happens often whenever the sky is in your image. A larger sensor means you'll be able to bring back shadow and highlight detail much easier without losing quality quite as much as you'd see in a smartphone camera.
    Second, DSLR and mirrorless cameras generally have more megapixels. While you certainly don't need the 60+ megapixels boasted by a few of the top cameras today, it can be nice to have a few extra megapixels when you want to print or heavily crop your image.
    Even though technology is improving, I just don't see how smartphone cameras will ever be able to keep up with DSLR and mirrorless cameras unless the smartphone's size is increased. That being said, the best camera is the one you have with you, and you should certainly grab those shots with your smartphone if you don't have a camera available!

    It does when one is not educated in photography. It's good enough for them. I'll stick to my SLR.

    This has a catch. Phones can do automatic HDR shots with a lot of stacking instantly. Camera has to do it manually in post. So the perceived DR may seem higher on the phone actually.

      It`s the dynamic range you get in one shot. For example you cant take HDR images with your phone of a moving object.

      True, if you want it done easily, a phone might work better.

      I broke my DSLR. Then i buy iphone. Cause say it have a good camera as they say. But when i use it. My samsung did more good shot than shitty i phone.
      And i ended buying a new camera. All i can say to you all phoenatiks even a thousand dollar phone can't beat the quality of the hundred dollar camera.🫠

    The tiny sensor and lenses in a phone camera cannot compete with a large sensor with good lenses.

    The boy forgot to tell that a smartphone takes around 6 to 8 pictures at an instant the moment you press the button. Those pictures get blended into a single photo without you even noticing. The result? High dynamic range.
    For serious pictures, a large camera still wins. But their time is counted, too…

    Can't forgot that smartphones usually has a digital zoom, while the interchangeable lens allows for a true optical zoom

    I mean a lot of situations even cameras have to exposure bracket whereas a phone can do it instantly. I’m a mirrorless shooter myself but dynamic range isn’t always the selling point especially for the inexperienced.

    • @AustinJamesJackson
      @AustinJamesJackson  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      True! This is because they automatically choose the shutter speed which is often too slow, resulting in a blurry subject. There is apps you can use to control your settings on the phone but I’d still much prefer a camera.

    Finally someone explains the real issue to this new generation believing with a smartphone they can make great photos or videos, But the blame lies with Apple, Samsung and all the phone makers who tell youth heyyy buy my phone and you won't need a camera and lens that costs $4,000 to do professional work. this is my face 🙄 Everything is money for that brands. Thank you buddy for to be honest with your subscribers and explain the real workd outside 👏👏👏

    Zoom into a smartphone photo even a little bit, and the quality goes down hill very rapidly. A lower res photo from a larger sensor will have better texture compared to a higher res smartphone photo.

    Like S24 Ultra can shoot in High Dynamic Range unlike iPhone. I saw this while i was switching from 15 pro max. 1" sensor is the biggest on S24 Ultra. I was team Apple for years, but if you can please make a video about it. Test which is better. S24 Ultra and your camera. S24 Ultra is great stuff and it probably will be better in things like nightography, astrophotography and others that require good electronics and sensor size

    • @AustinJamesJackson
      @AustinJamesJackson  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’ll have to test it out, but I’m sure it still won’t be able to compete in low light or scenes with high dynamic range with a true camera.

    I just got my full kit from Freewell and I asked 3 different professionals about how good of a job they do with my S24 Ultra and they all agreed that it was a beast of a set. It cost a fortune but they are far less bulkier than their professional equipment. Of course, they assured me it would never replace all their stuff, but that it would be enough to make a buck.

    But DSLR simply has the higher ceiling for what's possible with your photos.

    Images that come out of a smartphone have gone through many processing phases, thousands of algorithm and now AI. It's like processed food, still food but not It's original form. That’s why people say image quality from phone is 80% chip power and 20% camera. The more powerful the chip the better the images, megapixel doesn't say anything but a marketing scheme. Tiny sensor, tiny lenses, of course it can't compete without software magic, it's just physics.
    While DSLR take what is real and turn it digital, real art no processing bs. I don't want to spread any hate, i think it's crazy how far technology has come. Just that the majority of people doesn't understand and being mislead by greedy big tech companies.

    When asked what the best camera was: a well known photographer pulled out his iPhone. Stunned, the questioner asked the reason. The simple answer is: you always have your iPhone available to take that unanticipated shot. The best camera is the one that gets used.

      The thing I find interesting however is the following. „The best camera is the one you have with you.“, says the man while pulling out a Sony A7 IV. You can see that also on a lot of TH-cam videos. I mean, yeah, technically true that the A7 IV is probably the best camera you have with you, but that does not make it any more believable 😂

    Sensor yes, post processing no. The HDR in phones is absurdly better for dynamic range but at the cost of neutral colours.
    Mirrorless only has the edge in
    Natural colours
    Depth of field
    And telephoto/compression of shots
    Otherwise the phone if it has a pro photo mode is equal to a mirrorless now

    • @AustinJamesJackson
      @AustinJamesJackson  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The phone may give great results because so much of the process is automated, but a mirrorless or DSLR is going to blow it out of the water if you know how to edit and your scene has dynamic range.
