First of all, thank you for the video very self-explanatory, after washing many other videos and reading reviews yours the best and easy to pull. the only thing that I may add is a couple of straps to hold the belly of the kayak, just to be extra safe. but again thank you.
Thank you. I appreciate it. I like that recommendation but I can say that I have had this same set up for at least three years with two hung together and one by itself with zero problems but it can never hurt to be extra safe.
David Blumberg has a brilliant design with that additional pulley. I built two of these systems yesterday and the additional pulley makes it so much easier to control. Thanks for an elegant, simple do-it-yourself solution.

So, David I have looked at a bunch of how to’s for kayak hoists and yours is the way I am going to go. Second pulley makes a world of sense to me. My kayak however is a cedar strip 16’ long. I sew, and thus have created a hammock where the clips will attach and then to the pulley system. Thanks so much for sharing...
Susan Jaret good luck. I'm happy to help. I tried it with one pully and it just wouldn't work right. I have 3 kayaks and I hoist 2 of them together now on the one hoist and lift the 3rd on another.

Works like a charm...!! So much better than the pre-made kits with the straps you need to loop around the hull,and way more secure than the straps system that could slip off unless you secure them with an additional rops to each other...Not sure why you used 3 clips,I just ran my rope on the end you used 2 clips thru 1 clip,when I lower it I just unclip the 1 clip from the rope,leaving the clip hanging on the rope...didnt tie off rope to the clip like you did...either way,its a great system....and around $25 in materials.Only mistake I made was buying pulleys than didnt swivel ...the should be the swivel type...so will be redoing it,but now that I got it down right,that will only take 10 minutes to change them out.THANKS DAVE
Amazon sells a cheap system for something like 30 bucks for 2 bicycle or kayaks that works somthing like this but it has 1 rope that you pull and a rope locking system that engages on it own so there's no accidental slipping
I like this best out of the videos I've seen, but I think I might try with only one cleat and the other end of the rope I can tie a figure eight to keep it from backing through the pully there

I have 3 kayaks. 2 of them I have hooked together and one is by itself. I have had them hooked up for the last few years since I made this system with zero problems. Some people say that the kayaks could warp because of the way I did it but Im here to tell you that after the past few years they still look and work like new.
Great, simple concept, and you explained it really well. How far from the ceiling does your kayak hang? In order to open my garage door, I would need to have the top within about 6" of the ceiling. Thanks again!

I like the design, and not having to use straps. My only concern is during hot summer months. I wonder if the kayak might tend to bend a little and loose it's original shape.
I can't promise you it won't bend out of shape. I can only go off of mine which has been up for 2 years. I live in Maryland and it gets VERY hot in my garage. I still had zero issues. I even have 2 of them suspended together.
If you are pulling on 2 ropes, couldnt you do this with 2 pulleys, and 2 cleats? one for each end of the kayak? Sure you lose some mechanical advantage, but it can't be that heavy.
Why not? This has been working perfect for me. I actually have 3 hanging up now. 2of them are strapped together and hoisted up the same way. This is strong and is safe. Never once had an issue.
This is from what I've read, not from experience. So take it as you will. But what is being said; is that the plastic bottom will flex over time. Since majority of the weight is in the cockpit area. By hanging it from the ends, the middle will sag, the plastic will permanently take that shape. I dunno if that is really going to happen or not, I can't say. I just bought my first Kayak. Pelican Sport says to store it laying hull side down on a flat surface. I've also read that one should lay it on it's side (or hang it hull side up). The strapping under the belly (my take of it anyway) is that the two straps will support the majority of the weight around the cockpit area and the ends just kinda sit there, since the majority of the weight is being supported.
Terry C thanks. I'm not sure either but I can only go off of my experience. I have had zero problems with them so far and as I stated, on that same hoist I now have 2 of them hanging together and it works perfect. I have a total of 3 hanging in my garage. Why is it that in every DIY video there's always that one person who has to get on their high horse with that ”you should never blah blah blah" Can you not take a moment and thank the uploader for taking his time and going through all this effort to show us this video? How hard does it take to show a little human decency and common courtesy? If you think the uploader can improve on his work, then help him instead of knocking him down. Or, if you think you can do a better job, then go upload your own video! I for one think you did an amazing job, David. As in once set up I dont have access to one end. So wanting to end up with 2 rope coming together at one end obviously attached to each end of the kayak then through a single pulley then travelling to a double pulley then thats it. Hope that makes sense.
question from me - where did the 2nd hole come from to tie the string - looks like it goes in water hole and back out another hole - did you dril a 2nd hole?
That's going to be a solid no from me. You should be able to pull both ropes from the same end and raise it level and have one tie off point to deal with. This video is why the thumbs down should not be disabled.

SO close! Just add a double pulley or two singles at the same point so you can use both ropes (lift both ends) at the sametime

Use this pulley system and it works like a hot damn! Minimal effort and easy to put together! Took me an hr to do both!!!

should never store from frount and end suspended this way. Always use straps on the under belly

Why didn’t you just use one pulley on each end? Is your kayak so heavy
Rob Coppolino I did that at first, it is a pain in the rear. Pulleys are pretty cheap and the extra $8 to half the effort is well worth it.
I used a 3rd pully because I noticed that with 2 of them it didn't want to go up right. adding the 3rd made it go up much easier.
