    Thanks for this, it was a huge help for a novice! I adapted to my situation and ran the pulleys parallel to each other instead of in a line, and it's working great! I have two adult and two kid kayaks hoisted up with strong enough hardware to support it, and now they're not taking up space in our car port. Excellent video!

    Just did this in my carport and hung both of our kayaks so that I can hoist them directly into and out of the bed of my truck. Works perfectly! My 'yaks are just under 10' long and my carport is only 9' from the ground to the crossmembers so I was able to use only 1 length of 100' rope for both hoists. Thanks for the help!

    I just salvaged the pulleys from a Bowflex system. I’ll be hoisting two kayaks on a basic frame, instead of individually. Thanks for the rope routing detail, very helpful in figuring out how to raise them all together to stay level.😎👍🏽

I substituted a double pulley after the cleat for each line, and the next pulley at the ceiling to guide the aft line better, but the rest is the same as the video. Even on my heavy fishing kayak this system works well. Thanks for sharing your setup.

    I’m looking for solutions to hoist two kayaks on our dock, and this seems like the best solution given that I can get a ring clamp or use chain like in the video to secure it over the round supports, but I’m struggling with a) keeping them secure during frequent windy days and b) keeping them secure from thieves. I imagine a couple padlocks could do the trick but it’d be easily overcome by the d-rings. Could a bike lock do it? Also, would there be a way to rig this for two kayaks? Or am I installing two hoist systems for this? I’d be interested to find a solution for using one hoist system for two, maybe getting more robust pulleys and rope?

  • @vansonmafeet734
    @vansonmafeet734 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great system. I did want to point something out however. The diagram that you drew shows both lines going through the first pulley. Then when you show the close up shot of the pulley system, one cord goes through the first pulley and the second cord goes directly through the second pulley skipping the first one. I installed my system as indicated in the diagram and when I tugged on both cords nothing happened. The two cords going through that first (smal)l pulley were too tight a fit and the kayak remained on the floor, no bueno. I ended up getting a double pulley as pulley number one and this worked much better. I thought it was worth mentioning for all your viewers.

    • @ZaneMcFate
      @ZaneMcFate 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the diagram does seem to imply that. If you look at his implementation though, there are no cases where two ropes go through a single pulley. A double would save space on that junction, that's a good idea; I simply hung two pulleys near each other for that portion.

    I have almost exactly what you have in terms of pulleys and carabiners lying around. Appreciate the layout as I was thinking of going one rope, but have seen the issue of wanting to raise only one end with a one rope system. The one thing I noticed because I had already put my pulley eyelet through the carabiner (tight fit, but good) was that you just put the T handle of the boat through the carabiner. I hooked mine through the actual rope so there is no way it is going anywhere. The way you had it made me a bit nervous as in tension it should be fine, but any relief of tension and it could come through and release.

    EVERY professional site that talks about hanging a kayak cautions to NEVER hang them by the handles. It can warp the yak, not to mention that the strain on the handles could eventually cause them to break. This is a good design for the pulley system, but it should have hooks hanging down that can be attached to straps that go around the yak at about 1/3 of the way in from each end.

    Solid vid. Clean, simple, strong. Any recommendations on what to secure to on finished drywall garage ceiling?
    Could go into wood ceiling hoist through drywall but not knowing if your centered on the hoist is nerve wracking.
    Was thinking may need to mount a 2x4 furring strips or a sheet of plywood to joists and anchor into that.
    Thoughts??

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would probably remove a bit of the drywall just to ensure you centered the anchors on the joists. The holes won’t be visible anyhow after your kayak is hoisted up there. If you wanted to you could just throw some joint compound on it and sand it down to make it look new. Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate that! 👊🏻

      I lift mine all the way to the pulleys which sit about 9” below the ceiling. So add 10” to the depth of your yak and you will have your answer. My guess is you will be close but okay.

    If I’m not mistaken with the pulleys attached to the kayak you should only need one piece of rope. It’s runs through all pulleys and anchors at the end. But great idea I am definitely going to use your idea with a few modifications thanks for the idea!

    • @HouseMadeUS

    • @ianm3343
      @ianm3343 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need to cut it at the floor. The rope only needs 2 terminations at the ceiling. The 2 lengths running to floor can just be a loop. Also the store bought ones have a safety brake so if you lose your grip the kayak doesn't fall.

    All I need is a garage with a ceiling like yours…as high as a cathedral. Here in the U.K. I doubt if many homes have such garages; none I’ve had even had a boarded ceiling. Actually those exposed rafters make hooks and bracketry easier to fit. My garage is a little larger than many but I don’t think there is headroom to have a kayak hanging from the underside of the roof. I’m going to measure carefully before I try!

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      With a different pilot system yes, but with just one line it won’t move horizontal to the floor. It wants to pick one end up before the other. Usually the far end. I initially tried the one rope system and it didn’t go up and down properly. So I went with two and it solved the problem.

    Hello Brian how's it going. I like your DIY kayak ceiling storage. That is all materials that you can get from Walmart and that is awesome for something that you can do for cheap that would hold well. I have 9 kayaks in my family to store so this will work great. Also like how you demonstrate this in your flip-flops too. I am a huge fan of flip flops. Me & my wife , my 5 boys , & my granddaughter that's all we wear is flip flop. I have big very very extremely wide feet that are sz15 with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. All 5 of my son's have very wide feet cuz of me. My foot outgrow shoes , socks , and boots so that's why I'm a huge fan of flip-flops. It's the only Footwear that my foot will barely fit into you. It's just awesome seeing people doing things in there flip flops the way I have to do. Good video thank you for sharing.

      @@HouseMadeUS that's awesome to hear man that you love yours flops too. I just love how they keep your feet cool & not sweaty or stinky & with me having very fat wide toes my toes can sweat very very easily but it doesn't happen because of me wearing flip-flops. Like the fact that they just a quick slip on and go but unfortunately for me because of me having extremely wide feet I had to sit down & pull the flip flops straps wide enough to slide my foot in because of my toes being wider than the flip-flop strap. Hope you having a good weekend.

Agree, the way the pulleys are mounted, noticed in the up postion it become an issue as the lines rub a bit (4:57). 2) Also the carry handles may not support this over time....You dont want to be hurt and look like a mushroom .
