I like a video where they use an actual older vehicle as the example. Most videos use a new car, everything fairly clean and easy to fix. This is a real-world situation like most of us would find. Rusted hub where sensor mounts, trying to fix something late at night with a flashlight, and not always all the perfect tools for the emergency job. That's why it's DIY. Well done!

Tip: When bolts break off and sensor can not be removed, drill right through them with closest sized drill bit to size of sensor. Remove any residue left in hole and make sure no material gets trapped between teeth on sensor ring. Take new sensor and apply a 1/4in ring of silicone sealer on new sensor's base and place sensor all the way down until it is flush with hub surface. Let silicone dry for about 20 minutes and reconnect wire as required. If you ever have to pull sensor out again, it will come out easily since no dirt or rusty bolt will be holding it in place. Never had one pop out, even on off road vehicles.

I have a problem. On my 1996/7 Volvo S40 I cannot pull the wire out of the sensor. I have the whole wheel hub together with the ABS wiring from a 98 car from a junkyard but I cannot pull the wire out of that one either. Any tricks on how to do it on old, more rusted cars? Can you use certain chemicals to help it wiggle out or will that damage anything?
The ABS light is constantly on, the whole system has disabled itself. The speedometer and odometer work though. The ABS system stopped working after a wheel bearing replacement job.

Also as someone who can only speak english language, but also with an accent (southern) I always marvel at those who can speak it when it is not their native language. I also always appreciate anyone who does try, even if they can barely.

On old cars i find the abs sensor often breaks trying to remove it. Or those little bolts snap. If it doesn't want to come out loosen the axle nut and push the shaft back enough to see the ring and wash it that way. Also check if it's cracked or loose.

can a bad wheel bearing cause abs to come on?
I have not got around to replace the rear driver side bearing but wondering if the rubbing and all the noise bad bearing make be the cause, braking is fine traction is fine as I have tried to make the car lose controls but traction will not allow the car to lose control, traction light is on too.

Did this fix your problem. I changed the wheel bearing in a 2013 Nissan rogue the The shield on the new one came off and cut the speed sensor off. When I took the old one off I twisted the bolt off holding the sensor so I did what the guy before you did and used the self tapping bolt to hold it in but my abs system isn't working I'm lost on what the problem could be. The New bearing, new sensor or something else I'm going to try to do this next. Thanks for the info

I just went through this job and believe me, you need to pull the hub off to do a thorough job cleaning the ring gear and backing plate. Plug the bearing races and power wash the ring gear and inside of hub.. Lots of places for magnetic trash and metallic dust to hide. After my first attempt of pulling sensor and cleaning gear through the hole, the ABS light returned in a few miles. I pulled the sensor again and it had a full beard of magnetic dust again. Time to pull the hub and get serious. Power wash hub interior (with bearing area sealed off) and backing plate. Dry with compressed air at full force.

I'm trying to resolve an ABS fault message from the right hand rear wheel of my 2002 Volvo V70XC and the ABS sensor ring is difficult to clean as it's concealed and only accessible by removing the sensor and inserting a small file into the sensor hole and you can't see what you are doing. Peter Finn, I hope you did not take offence at my comment. You have a distinct accent which reminds me of Western European, the lighting in the video and the cadence in your voice almost made it seem the repair was done in secret. (made the video entertaining) My ABS light went on in my van the other day and your fix should be what a DIY person should attempt. I used your method.

DeWALTer_White: i like this video. It is well done and the guy is trying hard to give the best tech explanation in english, which is not his native language.
Question is, how good we are to give same explanation in another language that is not ours.
Anyway we agree: Great job with this vid. Peter, thanks!
