  • Hey everyone! In this video, I'm going to take you on a wild ride and share the story of when and why I blew up my modified MK7.5R Golf engine in Scotland (27th of June 2022). Follow along as I recount the events leading up to the engine failure, and try to make sense of what went wrong. Trust me, it's a tale that's sure to make you laugh and maybe even shed a tear. So grab a snack, sit back, and join me on this journey through the highs and lows of car ownership. Also shout out @s33ens on Instagram over at devils developments he is who remapped my car and rebuilt the engine.

    Good on you for acknowledging that you didn’t look after it properly, and that’s why it blew up. Most people would’ve just said “oh the tune caused it” or “VW sucks I’m never buying one again”.
    Honestly, as with most German cars, as long as you look after them, they’ll look after you.
    Not letting it warm up before getting into boost and launching is definitely a big reason.
    Do I think it’s dumb to do that stuff? Yeah, because it shortens the lifespan of your engine quite a bit, as you found out, and you actually lose power as it dies, because often you do piston ring and cylinder damage which causes compression loss. But I can’t rag on ya too hard because you owned up to it.
    My lesson was a much cheaper one. A 1986 Honda 250 enduro bike I bought for $1000USD. I knew it leaked and burnt oil badly. But one day I took it out on a 4-5 hour ride, much longer than my normal 2 hours. Well it had burnt and leaked all the oil (also didn’t check it before the ride) and was bone dry. It started bogging down as I was going down my street, coming up to my driveway. I let it cool off, filled it back up, and it fired up on the first kick. It still ran fine, but burnt oil like a 2 stroke. Sold it for $500, so I only lost about $500 all in all.
    Ever since then I maintain my vehicles pretty darn well. Never get over 3k RPM or half throttle until my oil temp hits 180°F.
    It sounds like you’ve learned your lesson and will take good care of the car now. You did something stupid, but you are not a stupid person because you’ve learned from your mistakes. Stupid people don’t learn.
    ------
    The pistons are definitely one of the weakest links with this engine. GTI’s get forged steel cranks, forged steel rods, and cast aluminum alloy pistons with a heat resistant coating. Now, the forged parts aren’t using as strong of materials as aftermarket forged components, but they are much better than cast options.
    That’s why you have to be especially careful with how much load you put on the engine under 2,800-3,000rpm, because with direct injection engines there’s a phenomenon called low speed pre-ignition or LSPI. It causes super high cylinder pressures which causes severe knock and can destroy your pistons, especially the aluminum ones in the GTI.

    Dude my r36 man no matter what I did wouldn’t break! Launching cold start running over 300,000kms, why didn’t the golf r just have a vr6 engine honestly those motors are bullet proof! Anyway now I have a golf r myself and I’m hella worried when it comes to stuff like this, I heard keep a eye on your oil temp! If it goes between 116 to 124 pull over and let it cool down for 30 mints! Or expect a broken head gasket or a piston at that, the motor can’t handle those high temps! I reckon that’s what happen with yours! Your driving hella far distances you should keep a eye on the oil temp, if your modding this cars I would upgrade the oil cooler to a bigger size and also get a new pcv with oil catch can! This things are known to go and can cause serious engine issues, this are there down falls that many have spoken about with this motor and it’s the only down falls which you can avoid ever happening! By doing those 2 things! And clearly not destroying it every day with accelerations like any car, really. You could destroy a new car in under a day if you go reckless on them.
    I would suggest any golf r person if you driving it crazy get a bigger oil cooler! There’s wider ones, that keep temps lower, get a new pcv with a oil catch can! This are the two that I have heard by mechanics that give this engines there down fall, they over heat and once it over heats the oil the motors gone, remember those temps if your ever driving and get anywhere between 110 to 126 pull over! Trust me I wouldn’t even risk it. Always eyes on radiator temps as well make sure it’s always on 90 degrees for radiator temps, if it goes slightly up pull over, dam I feel sorry for you man I hope this never happens to anyone golf family!!

    • @timtincan1917
      @timtincan1917 ปีที่แล้ว

      any car really, i've seen 2JZs and LS7s cough up the ghost. some take longer then others, the number 1 rule of tuning is that you basically half the mileage on any maintenance requirements. Oil changes go down to 3,000 miles. spark plugs get changed out 5-10k depending on brand. if you tune and you don't do maintenance, its a matter of time. Time is already shorted with the higher power output.

    Hey
    Did you get a conclusion about the engine blow??
    I think you might have thought of a lot of cases
    I'll tell you the conclusion that I came from experiencing the same experience and the engine blow case around me.
    The direct cause of the engine blow is the loss of engine oil viscosity. If the heat management of the golf R is insufficient and the tuning is overlapped, the loss of viscosity of the engine oil comes earlier than you thought.

    • @cargle45
      @cargle45 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The engine blow is terrible for everyone, but if you don't want it to happen, you have to check the viscosity of the engine oil periodically.
