I think Trains Mag did a full-length feature on the BL20-2 at some point. They were designed to recycle the chassis and electricals of GP7's and GP9's while still being a mostly-new locomotive. For some reason, though, they just couldn't make the economics of rebuilding versus starting-from-scratch work out properly in the end.

@@gusfring9895 Belated thanks for comment. That's why I put it in quote marks. Actually, what one could read in the sixties was that the steamwhistle-like sound was produced by an early version of an electronic horn, produced by way of a speaker that looked something like a bull-horn, visible in some photos. May not have been true of all FL-9's, which were produced in two batches of 30 units each, 1956 and 1960. Another unique feature of FL-9 was length, longer than just plain F's, shorter than E's, with two-axle truck front, three-axle truck rear. Fascinating locomotive.

Hadn't heard of the SD70J before seeing this - battery-electric variant, is that a rebuild by this Joule company or a new-build EMD model? I think that's an intriguing concept, but I think the rail context offers different challenges and different possibilities than an electric car, so the concept should be approached differently - not just a locomotive with batteries instead of prime mover. I think there's some really intriguing possibilities actually.
    - As energy requirements are immense though in some cases intermittent, and locomotives already use electric final drive, a series hybrid arrangement would make a lot of sense.
    - Batteries could be put on a tender, separate from the main locomotive, with minimal modifications to the otherwise conventional locomotive to produce the aforementioned series hybrid. Or by using said tender the batteries could be separated from the (electric or diesel-electric) locomotive for charging. As batteries are dense but not all that large, they could be low down on a flat car pushed ahead of the locomotive that the driver sees over, allowing switching the battery tender out without uncoupling from the train.
    - A Mother-Slug arrangement, with the mother's prime mover providing energy, the slug loaded with batteries, the batteries and prime mover both feeding all traction motors on both, resulting in a twin-unit series hybrid.
    - Stopping to charge isn't necessary - feeding electricity into a moving train has been mastered for decades or even centuries. A route could be partially electrified, with locomotives powered and charging the batteries using a pantograph on electrified segments, and batteries on non-electrified segments. Or likewise the main line is electrified while branch lines are not. Could use (non-battery) electric locomotives on the main line, and if it's needed to go down a non-electrified branch line bring a battery tender.
    - Battery helpers could make a lot of sense on major hill routes, providing some of the power for climbing alongside the conventional diesels, then almost all the dynamic/regenerative braking going down, so they are fully charged for the next train without ever needing to be charged externally. These battery-powered booster locomotives could be low-profile B units coupled in front of the normal locomotive, the driver seeing over it, so that the crew never has to move to a different cab nor does the lead locomotive need to uncouple from the train.

These Joule locomotives are going to be by Progress Rail, which bought EMD a decade ago, but Progress Rail kept the EMD brand. Yes, they're basically glorified slugs or B units with batteries stuck on to them to utilize the energy normally lost through heat during dynamic braking with diesel locomotives.

@@doimoi958 Do they have cabs? That would make them not B units. I'd imagine crews would rather be in the battery-electric locomotive than in a diesel in the same consist, as it would be much smoother and quieter without the engine. Are they slugs in that they are electrically connected to the diesel unit (making for a series hybrid) or are they fully independent locomotives? From what you're saying it sounds like it's pretty much the last of the ideas I suggested, a battery-powered helper that can capture and re-use energy that would normally be lost to dynamic braking.

@@robk7266 Agreed - isn't the whole point of the fully-cowled model for passenger use to be more aesthetically pleasing than a hood unit freight locomotive? Or maybe more aerodynamic (I doubt the F40PH was that either)? If it's going to be that ugly, what is its advantage over just using the "mandatory passenger variant" GP40?
