    Lovely memories of my youth, growing up in Windsor. Saturday mornings shopping in Peascod Street then waiting for the guards’ band, accompanied by the new guard for the castle, to march up Castle Hill and into King Henry VIII gateway......a long time ago, but still vivid in my mind.....thanks for the memories..

    The march is Washington Grays, by Grafulla, which dates from the American Civil War. Washington Grays was composed in 1861 for the 8th Regiment, New York State Militia based at the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx. The “Grays” in the title refers to the color of the regimental uniforms.

    Two years ago I thanked you for this wonderful video. I have enjoyed this and your other band videos many times. The musicianship on display is most impressive. Thanks for posting and keep up your fine work.

    Drum Majors are an appointment and usually come from the Drum Corps (senior NCO's) in the Guards and Royal marines The Royal Air Force Drum majors are usually appointed from the band and are musicians holding a Senior NCO rank

    @Doubledig Nope, it's definately more than 1 day, the old guard keep changing regiment!!

    @noskcajluap this is one day, the guards mount in shifts. in this instance it was the royal logistic corps. one on, one off. have been on this guard changing system on numerous occassions during my 15 years in the army. (not in windsor) but it is the same elsewhere.

    @MrJimmyboy1972 - At 2 Mins 33 Secs the Director of Music is next to the Bass Drum and at 2 mins 37 he is behind the Bass Drum and at 2 Mins 43 Secs he is back next to it! I am 100% sure this is 2 days filming. At 6mins 48sec the cameraman is clearly stood right by the gate to the Barracks and at 6mins 53secs you see a picture of the Barracks gate and he is no where to be seen.

    @adelaide102 I think you mean the Life Guards wear the curbchain under the lip.The Blues and Royals do wear it under the chin.

    @noskcajluap i dont think this is two days filming. reason: the guard are the same, the officer of the guard gets protection from two armed NCOs, and on the film it is a female soldier who does that job throughout the film. regarding the director of music, he is in the centre of the band behind the bass drummer. as the band "wheels" he can look as if he has moved, if you, as a cameraman dont change your position. as the band straightens up, he will be behind the bass drum as usual.

    Great Band beautiful sound, I guess the man out front is the Band Corporal Major ? Does he know that The Blues and Royals wear the curbchain under the bottom lip not the chin ?

    Help please...it is my understading that the drum majors of the various guard bands are not members of the band. If thatis true, how are they chosen for that particular post?

    • @TheDrummie1
      @TheDrummie1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drum Majors from the Footguards are appointed from the Corps of Drums, they are not musicians from within the Regimental Band.
      In the case of the chap in front of this band he is the Band Corporal Major, similar to a Sergeant Major from the infantry , he is part of the band. The ranks of the Household Cavalry differ from those in the Footguards, they (Cavalry) do not have Sergeants, they have Corporals, Corporals of Horse, Staff Corporals, Corporal Majors. I may have missed a rank out, a very close friend of mine currently serves in the Band of The Household Cavalry ( as they are now called, they are an amalgamation of the Band of the Life Guards and the Band of The Blues and Royals. He originally was in the Life Guards ( Red tunics, White plumes, curb chain under the lip, on top of the chin.)

    What is the title of the march played around 5:00? The two-part euphonium transitions might point towards this being a German march.
