My Grandfather and I completely rebuilt the front end of his 73 Classic Mini. New steering rack, shocks, complete pre built front hubs with wheels bearings and ball joints already installed. After installing everything the steering return to center was not correct and stiff, this video helped so much we plan to order two new ball joints with shims and correct the stiffness!
A quick way to doing the shims as pointed out in the rover service manual is to install the balljoint without shims until its reached desired balljoint tightness and then measure the gap which will give you a quick guide for what shims you require.
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I've done many, many of these in my 50 years in the trade and have never lapped them in, and I give a bit more slack than you have.But I think I'll modify my thinking. I also think that opening up the grease track is a very good idea

Yep but as said in the video, it doesn't work as intended, and you'll still have to "adjust" yourself.
