The Vostroyan models are what happens when someone just 1-to-1's the original John Blanche concept art as a physical sculpt. They are 40k as it should be: pure fever dream.
Same dude, Victoria Minitures and more recently Anvil Industries have been my go to for a long time with some extra bits and peices from Zing and shapeways (owe my entire Harakoni Warhwaks army to that combo)
The moment I saw the thumbnail I knew this was going to promote Victoria's latest KS, I backed soon as it went live and can't wait to print some Light Horse! Have loved her work from those early photos in WD and onto her miniature sculpts.
Good work. Half the fun of Imperial Guard was the varied regiments and the essentially open invitation to come up with your own world, unique look and specific traditions. I'm in "probably couldn't copyright them" camp, for what it is worth.
For anyone wanting cheap vostroyans I highly recommend the Les Grognards from Wargames Atlantic. Multipart plastic kit which makes 25 guys for £25 or your currency equivalent.
I think that's a good kit but as someone with a Vostroyan army who has built it, I honestly don't think they models are very Vostroyan-ish. They work better for Kreig or for a custom Napoleonic guard regiment.
I knew a guy in the early '00s that had a Praetorian army. 3000 points. All metal. All painted. It was damn impressive. Came here to also say that I really appreciate that you folks are very open to 3rd party printers for GW minis. I'm big on the idea that, if GW won't make it, we should get it elsewhere, and your willingness to show that openly is great.
In 2004 I played against a full metal praetorian army . I said to him you work for GW . He replied how do you now . Its the only way you could have that army .
Wonderful set of miniatures! Most notably Murray’s Tallern. Thank you for giving respect to the equine, and treating it as part of the character, not a brown blob the character was riding on.
I recently traveled to Jordan and one thing we saw there was this historical re-enactment performance in Wadi Rum called "Journey Through 1916". Basically you ride on the back of an old train in the desert with a bunch of people dressed as Ottoman soldiers, as if you're on a supply run for the Ottoman forces, but then you're "attacked" by Arab Rebel fighters on horses and camels who ride up firing their rifles. It was really fun, and it was so clear looking at the Arab Rebels where the inspiration for the Tallarns came from. Inspired me to find my old Tallarns and repaint them to look like the uniforms those guys were wearing in the re-enactment. Also want to do some rough riders on camels if I can find any good models in the right scale. Also highly recommend it if you ever go to Jordan, awesome place.
During Lockdown, I spent an unreasonable amount of money on 20 Praetorian Guardsmen, a Commander HQ and 3 lascannon teams 😑 I had a full army as a kid and couldn’t resist, when I got back into the hobby. No regrets.
Oh man, that Ratling mini really drives home how much cool stuff is in 40k that GW probably isn't going to get around to anytime quick...good thing we've got awesome indie creators making cool stuff! :D I'm down for Cub Scout Imperial Guard, haha.
i knew the backstory behind vict and victoria miniatures but have been shopping with them so long i almost become blinded to the passion and skill on display, and the interview section helped remind me how cool she is. never forget the awesome humans working behind the store page
I love Victoria minis and those new cavalry minis are just so good looking, sadly as a european citizen the price are quite steep for us. When it comes to Tallarn inspiration I was surprised you didn't mentionned Lawrence of Arabia and his arab raiders during WW1. I hope to see more of Victoria minis in your video they deserv more visibility. Can't wait for the rest of your Imperial and Traitor Guard projects too. Cheers!
Those are absolutely amazing, that is exactly one of the reasons why I started modelling, I wanted create things that I wished i could buy but didn’t exist. So far I’m doing only terrain, but minis will be my next journey. Thank you so much for making the videos you are making and inspiring me to become a creator.
I've had the glossy wash issue with bad paint batches in the past - if you don't have or want to use a spray varnish then a thin coat of Lahmian medium (or any other pigment-free matte medium) achieves the same effect :) This can be more useful if it's just a portion of the model that got glossy and spraying would be overkill.
ANZAC's IN 40K !!! ANZAC's IN 40K !!! ANZAC's IN 40K !!! ANZAC's IN 40K !!! ANZAC's IN 40K !!! I also want to make an Australian Imperial Guard, they come from a death world filled with killer animals based on Australian wildlife, the most feared being the Death Emus. And also Thylacines are domesticated animals that the planet's citizens commonly use as pets. Thylacines are adorable, I don't care what anyone else says.
Great work all around; some amazing sculpting from Dave AS PER USUAL, a moody diarama from Jen that's SPECTACULAR, but just a giant HELL YEAH for Murray's Tallarn Desert Rider! Tallarn is my favorite 40K regiment, and the nmm was just ON POINT. I think I'm going to copy that whole color palate for my custom Tezarda Roadrunners
I think having light-horse cavalry for the Space Bears would be a great idea! If the parent chapter can have Thunder Wolves, why not give a touch to the North American Plains tribes once they incorporated the horse into their cultures?
Gw could have just done the kits like the Horus hearsay minis. So you buy twenty criege or Cadian bodies with dynamic and versatile poses. And then you buy a weapons kit like snipers, lasguns, ordnance platforms, hotshot lasguns, command squad bits and build the squads you want.
I hate to say it, that Mordian ratling did not at all resemble Mordians. A good paintjob for sure, but nothing like the well dressed and loud-colored Mordians
As a fellow Aussie (with some 2nd ed Tallarn I'm just about to put through the thinners for 10th ed) I have *seriously* been eying the slouchies on Victoria Minis to make an "attached company" for the Desert Raiders. This comment is strongly in favour of an Aussie Guard army.
Yeeeeeah, some proper imperial guard. Much love for the new cadian model, they're absolutely fantasmic, but theres just something about the variety of the old regiments. I don't even play anymore, but kill teams of different regiments are semi regular part of my converting/hobby schedule. Currently working on some of my favorites, the Harakoni Warhawks, but they take bits from soooooo many different kits its kinda ridiculous
You all are amazing you don't even know. I'm literally making a renagade guard that's gonna be a mix of blooded and other killteams, cadians, and some etsy proxy bits cause I like some of the older teams like Elysian drop troops and talarn desert raiders cause I want an excuse to use all them in one army
Please God just let me hear Murray's internal monologue for, like, five minutes... bastard always looks like he's just about to burst out laughing! Seriously though, another lovely Retrohammer vid. Keep up the good work!
Waaaait they've discontinued the regiments in *canon* also? I'd heard about that ridiculous "Astra Militaris" thing as a way to lock in copyright but I assumed it was just a cosmetic change and the lore would stay the same 😢
Now I want to buy a box of cadians and kitbash them into 10 unique different regiments instead of my normal 90% Cadian with the last guy being different as just a palette cleanser
Dave question, for the Vastroyan if you had used the back of a Death Corps figure wouldn't that have given the correct silhouette to the finished figure? I never played and build mostly WW@ and a little WW1, but from the art work I have seen I do remember Long great coats with gold breastplates. If I am wrong please ignore. Thank you, Oh before I for get great job and as always a great video.
I'm a little confused about why the Vostroyan was primed purple? It seemed like almost the entire color was painted over at the end so I was just wondering what the thoughts on the the process were there!
Basically to add a punch of color saturation into the red. Especially the shading. Did it work? Idk, but I feel like if you don't try new things you won't learn much! Call it an experiment
It was never lack of interest. It was the copyright reason. They blew up an entire miniature range just so they could copyright stuff from it. Hell, they tried to copyright the words space marine together.
@@TabletopTime holly molly i didnt expect you to see my comment, and i would love to see part 2 with elysians ^^. (i even considered buying squad from ebay to make a cool kill team out of them). PS. I love your videos and minis.
Anytime I hear of someone tackling Mordians, I get excited. Unfortunately, I'm left a bit let down. For me, what really completes a Mordian are the epaulettes on their uniform and the peaked caps, which is what's always left out of most Mordian Kitbashes. Which is odd for this video, given that Victoria Miniatures makes epaulette bits. I wonder if upscaling their line of minis is on the to-do list for Victoria Miniatures?
Vostryans are different from Vostroyans in that they are from Straya, a land down under. Pronounced Vos-tray-ans ;)
"Saved it!"
Speaking of pronunciation, I don’t know about the Death Korps, but for Marine Corps, the “p” is silent. Like apple core.
You won't like this, but political activists killed the guard regiments, I believe the racist word was used a lot.
Mordians wear late 19th century Prussian Uniforms...
Victoria minis ratlings are obviously US Union soldiers from ther civil war.
The Vostroyan models are what happens when someone just 1-to-1's the original John Blanche concept art as a physical sculpt. They are 40k as it should be: pure fever dream.
As a Guard player who began collecting during 2nd Ed this ep hits me right in the feels
All hail Victoria minis

Gdamn Dave's Vostroyan looks like a proper old-school sculpt! It's amazing to see your progress!
Dave and Jenn can’t even take a weekend away without working! 😂
aussie guard is something i would love to see
Van Diemens guard range from Victoria Miniatures
2:00, cossacks, Prussians, soviets, all used interchangeably. Lol

So, so cool. Love these kinds of vids from y'all. Conversion, sculpting, painting, and an awesome end result.
ah so cool to have a little interview in there ! Love Victoria miniatures stuff from France !! :)
Uh, travelling for work! All the minis turned out great! But I have to say Murray's horse is my favourite!
crying in Valhallan :( Thanks for the love given to "lost" Guard
They're unsupported, not forgotten. GW might not provide official models but I don't think they aren't well known among Imperial guard types.
Aussie guard to complement the Space Bears lore... That sounds really cool lol
This is so awesome! Please please please do other regiments!!!
Victoria Miniatures are excellent
If only the Imperial guard wasn't "generic cadian regiment 123" every other box.
Hey, nice work. The vostroyan firstborn are my favorite. I had the idea of chaos corrupted vostroyans, but I am not sure how I could make these. 😅
Murray has got to be one of my favorite painters out there

The most conistent 40k mini channel! Always putting out top videos often
When converting vostroyans I feel like the necromunda clan esher guns fit really well with very little conversion needed.
undercoating purple for reds is goated chad behavior can confirm

Love the Hussar inspired mini
Victoria’s minis are so good. Love the slouch hat and her horses are so real. Wow your great grandfather would love these miniatures. ❤
Your Vostroyan build was really inspiring :) I thought I build mine pretty good but you just did it better
Please God just let me hear Murray's internal monologue for, like, five minutes... bastard always looks like he's just about to burst out laughing! Seriously though, another lovely Retrohammer vid. Keep up the good work!
If they bring out an upgrade box like they did with cadians, I would start collecting a regiment of Tallarn desert raiders because they're so neat
Waaaait they've discontinued the regiments in *canon* also? I'd heard about that ridiculous "Astra Militaris" thing as a way to lock in copyright but I assumed it was just a cosmetic change and the lore would stay the same 😢
For some time i am working on an australian themed army for 40k. I will also use a good hand full of hill billy ogryns.
That Ratling reminds me figure of Good Soldier Svejk in Przemyśl. :D

You guys should make Tanith guard from Gaunt's Ghosts, with their armor and cloaks. I want guard that'll match my Ghosts

Death corps have a calf length double breasted greatcoat, vostroyans have a knee length jacket with either a breastplate or chainmail
The Death Korps are my favorite regiment. So I guess I lucked out.
I have always wanted the Van Diemen's regiment for forever. I nearly bought British 8th just to make them XD
12:15 just for future reference the Corps in Marine Corps is pronounced like “core”
Valhalans please. Ive been wanting to create a valhalan kill team for ages, love to see how you all would do it
Tbh Tallarn desert raiders are more Lawrence of Arabia than Afghan mujahideen.

Ooooh. My 3 favourite IG Regiments.
Great work! Fairdinkum🎉!
Once again great video. The ratling reminds me Good soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek 😍 was in intentional? 😊
WINGED HSARS!?!?! 9:26 10:59
really like the desert solider person thing
love Victoria minitures and have a squad Tallarn guard based on there desert raiders range
With the way GW are handling Kill Team these days among other things, I think it's only a matter of time before many of these come back.
Does anyone make minis to reenact the Emu War?
(Possibly with the emus capturing some of the enemy artillery…)
Go to pay a visit to WarGames Atlantic you'll see all the Imperial Guard regiments that you want to see again
I was expecting Sergio Perez to appear when the tallarn raider got revealed
Watch all of these regiments be re-released next month
Love Victoria miniatures, but they seem to hate me, so if anyone has any tips for getting them to stay together I'd love to know.
So this is like 90% GW model, and what was an stl is something that GW doesn't make - so could it be used in GW tournaments?
It was never lack of interest. It was the copyright reason. They blew up an entire miniature range just so they could copyright stuff from it. Hell, they tried to copyright the words space marine together.
IMHO best heads for Vostroyans are Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards heads
Only thing I did not like about those vostroyan 3rd party heads is the bear skin hat looks too thin when compared to the actual models
I will not sleep until space bears get cubs
Damn i expected to see some Elysian droptroops. Sadge
Part 2?
