the rogal dorn is too much of a mashup between various IRL tanks so it looks disjointed, that goes away without the turret. combine that with the removal of the stupid front hull gatling gun & incredibly dumb dual stubbers and this has taken the original tank from "kid drawing super cool tanks in school" to a grounded, realistic looking vehicle that just happens to be in 40k. GW's current phase of whacking 10 different weapons on every vehicle is so stupid.
@@bigpoppa1234 That's pretty much how all GW tanks are aren't they? Leman Russ is a British Mark IV Male tank with the turret of a German Panzer 4 and super deformed "Heroic" proportions taken from the original Land Raider. The Ragnarok is a Soviet T-28 with a KV-2 turret. EDIT: The Siegfried is a post-war soviet mockup of a tractor tank often stated to be the NI-1 (But really isn't). It's just par for the course! That said, I *completely* agree with your description of the Dorn, especially the dual stubbers/meltas and the hull gatling. The hull pulveriser cannon is ok though since there's some historical precedent for that (bad) design decision like the M3 Lee/Grant, the Churchill MK.1, and the Char B1.
Here is a challenge for you - ATTILA! The 'Rough Riders' are rightly famous, but surely not ALL troops from there take the form of their famous cavalry? So, there is the challenge, infantry and/or mechanised forces from a standard type regiment from Attila!
Wow, you've done a brilliant job making that casemate look realistic, I wouldn't be able to tell anything was different if not for having seen the original first
Thanks Tom! At first I was very apprehensive about the how the blend between the turret roof and the rest of hull would look but it'd turned out pretty well I think.
The silhouette on this tank is 100x better than the official Rogal Dorn - which is just WAY too visually busy with all the little guns and nonsense everywhere. Fantastic job!
Very nice! Removing some of the guns really does give it a more grounded feel. It kind of reminds me of the italian WW2 Semovente tank destroyers...fitting with the whole desert vibe...
I never liked the Rogal Dorn, always looked too much like a toy, especially with the absurd amount of guns slapped everywhere, but man you really managed to turn it into something grounded and cool, and the desert scheme is just icing on the cake!
@totalCoolerUsername I agree! I also like the Rogal Dorn, Malcador and Chimera (particularly the malacador), but I think the regular leman russ is a bit too cartoony
Awesome conversion and hilariously timely. I'm weathering and finishing my Guard tank destroyer bash - Solar Auxilia Leman Russ + Shadowsword cannon in the hull - lots of putty & plasticard!
Would’ve been cool to see it painted up pink like WW2 desert jeeps, could’ve had “ pink panther” written on the side and some cool free hand hull art. Looks amazing though, great work Pete
I’ve heard people say the Rogal Dorn is supposed to look like a 40k sherman, but I’ve always thought the hull and tracks look like a t28 superheavy assault tank. Like, as far as inspiration goes, it even fits the name better since the t28 (and t95) were designed be slower breakthrough tanks that rely on having huge slabs of frontal armor to absorb incoming fire and a giant gun to assault enemy fortifications - which is just perfect for a vehicle named for the primarch of the Imperial Fists. If I played guard, this conversion is almost exactly what I would have gone for and I’m so happy to see the concept realized so brilliantly. Awesome work!
@@cirno9349 Haha now that you mention it yeah the front hull does look alot like the M6. However the tracks are like a mix between the ARL-44 and M6 because its hull doesn't overlap the tracks like the M6 does but it does have the larger road wheels like the M6. Of course being overloaded with guns is definitely an American thing.
Absolutely brilliant. This is awesome, i already liked the look of the Rogal Dorn tank. But now im convinced that it was supposed to be a tank destroyer from the start.
I'm likely gonna go the same route with mine, definitely a better aesthetic. Good to know there's those suprise voids in the sections you snipped off the armor skirts. While sprue goo has it's uses, it does shrink back quite a bit once the solvent evaporates. it looks like just epoxy putty and some filing (or even the ole super glue and baking soda) probably ends up a better option.
Hi Pete! Hope youre doing well, wanted to recommend a potential kitbash that i havent really seen anywhere, I love the old Vostroyan units, and loved your kitbash video. What about a Vostroyan tank kitbash?
Fantastic video! The miliput was a really good idea for dealing with those transitions; wish I'd done that, myself, when I was converting some of my tanks. Probably would have gone better than my attempts at plasticard lol. The weathering and battle damage turned out *really* nice, too! By pure chance, I was experimenting with it earlier today, and I gotta say, I'm in love.
Mate that is an amazing depiction of a Tallarn tank killer!!! Not sure of you have already made one but it'd be sweet to see your take on a Steel Legion tank, not necessary another Rogal, a beefier Hellhound would kick ass!!!!
Thank you for showing newsh as weathering technique. I am not in a position where i can use neither airbrush or enamel/oil products, so really appreciate seeing the alternatives in action:)
This is very much reminding me of one of my early kit bash's. a Space Marine Rhino with a basilisk Cannon shoved up inside of it to use as a direct fire weapon.
As usual, incredible build. You really are an inspiration to push my kitbashing further. Something that I'd love to see in future as a Custodes player myself would be a Custodes build, perhaps amplifying one of our existing infantry options or kitbashing a Custom Venerable Dread (since the kit does not really exist anymore). Anyway thank you for the vid, looking forward to the next one Cheers!
Haha, unfortunately I messed up the filming of that part. You can get away with a finger for the small areas but the bigger parts like the tracks are better with a cloth
Hmmmm I've been toying with the idea of a Vanquisher tank hunter and you've given me some great ideas! Never thought about using the top of the turret like that

I built an entire unit of the Talarn like you did, as well as a completely kit bashed command squad... I have some unbuilt Rogal Dorn Tank still... so this may be on the cards for me soon!
if your interested in making armys for guard regments like the Tallarns that have few if any official models for, id recommend victoria miniatures. they have a massive range of infantry and exrta tank and feiild gun related stuff. but not a huge tank range
What's the consensus on using something like this on the tabletop as a Rogal Dorn? Would many folks let you be able to target units that weren't directly in front of it? I'm getting back into the hobby and want to put together some more WW1-ish tanks and I'd like to use this sort of form factor.
I'm a sucker for Tanith First and Only. This brings out a similar challenge to the suggestion of Attilan Rough Riders; how do you bring mechanized aspects to a force that is not defined by them? (Mounted cavalry for Attilans, stealth insertion, and infantry for the Tanith) My thought would be something along the lines of mobile artillery pieces set in place to support the Tanith. Or perhaps the humble chimera getting a chance to have a glow-up while Tanith infantry catch a ride after a successful mission.
This is the first time I've seen a Rogal Dorn that looks (almost) like a real tank. Powercreep/weapon creep is a real thing in 40k and all these newer tanks just overflowing with guns are just so silly. Also, it reminds me of the light scout vehicle in one of the stories in the Tallarn book. It's much smaller, described as half the size of a leman russ, equipped with a single hull-mounted lascannon next to the driver, and a communication console behind them, closer to, or maybe next to (I can't remember exactly), the engine. I've always wanted to build it, but I have never been able to properly work out what it should look like, because it would be almost half the size of the Chimera, which is probably the closest Imperial vehicle in design.
