  • This video is my Bushwakka Extreme 270 degree awning long term Review vs the AluCab Shadow Awn 270 degree which I replaced it with. While camping with the LandCruiser I explain why I decided not to keep the Bushwakka Extreme 270 and why in some ways I regret switching to Alu-Cab shadow awn 270.
I also talk briefly about the Bushwakker True Blue awning, as the True Blue is something that look very interesting to me.

    Thanks for the honest review
After looking at dozens of awnings it’s hard to find one that has been engineered properly
That was a good pickup about the rear coverage as I also have a wagon and quite a few awnings fail in rear coverage
I have finally decided on the 30 second awning as it’s quick to pack up when the weather changes
Strong brackets, free standing and only one pole to deploy in windy situations
Cam on “wild touring” does a great review

I made my awning a quick disconnect unit it saves driving around with the weight of it on the roof when its not needed & most of the wear seems to happen when driving and sun exposure to the bag and zip doesn't happen & the bonus is I can change the side of the car its on in two minutes

When you have really heavy rain, make the center leg a little lower and tie it down with the tie down in each corner.
It should make the rain run off down the tie downs.

The Bushwakka 270 True Blue awning seems like the best one that's Australian made. But another good contender is the The Bush Company XT 270 Awning. Though this one is South African made - like the Alu-Cab.

What a crap run! I'm glad you did the review on the bushwakka, I was minutes away from 'click' purchase. The poles were disappointing enough, clearly if they were in a showroom you wouldn't buy them, ive seem the true blue but that's in a very competitive price bracket.
Alu-cab, very dissappointing for a premium product, very interested to hear about the after sale service there!
Oh well, back to the drawing board, looks like I need to eye ball these things as they aren't exactly 'chump change' to buy...
Free standing is the go, but it looks like none handle moderate rain or wind anyway....
    Great review! Keep it up!

Thank you for the comment. Interestingly enough Bushwakka have been back in contact with me and have taken a lot of feedback on board and made some changes to the extreme. I’m finding out more details and will do an update when that information comes in. To be honest I would have bought the Bushwakka if I’d seen it in the showroom because there was a lot to like about it and on the surface it looked the goods. But as you saw, it was the things under the surface that ultimately let it down. Yes your right the true blue is right up there in the high end bracket, but how many are fully Australian made even in the $1500 plus range? So that’s an interesting product, but as you say, twice the price is nothing to sneeze at either.

    great review mate.
I have the Extreme 270 and have just ordered a True Blue. Johnny at bushwakka is great to deal with, answers calls and questions. my 270E was damaged in transit but still usable. johnny sent a new one as soon as the new stock was in, but told me to keep the old one and use it till it arrived. I agree on the brackets, and i have strengthened them up as well. I also ALWAYS support that single arm as it is an obvious weak point in them.
Why did i buy the E270 originally, well, in that price range, i would rather take my chances on an alloy hinge over a plastic type hinge any day on most other awnings.
over all i am quite happy with my E270, and i happily forked out over $2k for a new tru blue (dont have it yet) to go on the side of a camper trailer i am building with wall kit AND extra poles for each corner. Yes they may be "free standing" but why put undue stress on hinges for no apparent reason apart from laziness?
    Cheers

Great review mate, very disappointing experience for you. You should check out Clevershade, designed and made in Brendale, Queensland, engineered to be freestanding in up to 40 kph winds and they have the neatest canvas that I've ever seen on an awning, they have different sized models and the largest weighs only 16kg. The one I'm looking at is a 4mx4m 270 at $1386.00. Go Aus made 👍🇦🇺

Great review, finally someone doing a review on the 270 awnings with barn doors. I was wondering how much room you had in the rear with the doors open. I am thinking that I will go with the true blue version, at least there is local support for the frame and canvas. Also as you said there seem to be some really great features that come with the Bushwakka. Its either "The Bush Comany" or the "BushWakka" for us and price and location is going to be the decider.

    • @JebbreysJibberish
      @JebbreysJibberish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes and that brings up a good point. The Bushwakka extreme cleared the barn doors much better than the AluCab, but the AluCab did come with some sticky rubber that you can apply to the arms so it doesn’t damage the door. I’m hoping to get my hands on a TrueBlue soon so will do a video on that ASAP once it arrives.

    • @JebbreysJibberish

The area that takes the greatest load is the back where the awning pivots around so without a canopy I don’t think that would be a good idea as there would be nothing there to mount to.

Great review. I just installed the Bushwacker true blue 270. I am yet to do a trip but so far I'm fairly impressed.
The latest version has the main truss bars, top and bottom (where yours broke) drilled and the round upright goes through the holes then welded rather than butt welded on. It also has thicker aluminum (2.5 rather than 2mm from memory) over the Chinese version. It still, to me looks like it could be better with a gusset in this highly critical area. Looking at where yours broke it was the aluminum and not the weld that failed. Having said that I had it up in a breeze the other day and it seems pretty stable with no legs down.
It came with stainless brackets similar to yours and looked to be TIG welded really well but still a weak spot in my mind. I didn't use them because I had the luxury of a double row old school ARB rack enabling me to mount it directly to the top and bottom rails of the rack. There still seems to be a little flex on the stainless main hinge area so I plan to get some more stainless bolts and bolt the hinge through the back boards and to the rack using 8mm stainless security bolts. (It wouldn't take much to whip it off while we are off walking in the bush)
I did a fair bit of research and I think that the Bushcompany 270 XT looks like the strongest one available with a super strong looking hinge and gusseted truss's but they could not supply one for several months. They also wanted $1100 extra for the wall kit whereas the True Blue was only and extra $600 making it overall cheaper. They are also smaller like your AluCab. They are made in South Africa and I really wanted to buy Australian made so went with the Bushwacker True Blue.
I'm hoping that investing in Aussie made quality pays off.

Been running the true blue for a couple of years now. Although I still think there might be better options, I really like the look of my mates bush company awning, it has held up. The walls are excellent and the fabric and zips are all very solid. I think the mounts should be stainless like Alu cabs and also mounted further back to stop in moving about. But it’s held up find, although I put additional legs on it and use them for peace of mind most of the time.

Admittedly Alu-cab are the same but at least they had a local regional dealer who I could go and see. But his whole no prices or ability to order online is a joke in this day an age and is just an excuse to change prices Willy nilly and rip people off imho. Ironman are in the same category. If your product and services are solid, put your prices out there for the world to see instead of hiding behind pushy sales people on the phone. Sorry I’m ranting but other than the Alu-cab this one time, if they force me to call them or send them an email begging for information on pricing and how to buy they don’t get my business.
