Amazing!! My daughter runs the school lunch program in their small western Colorado community and has managed to get most of the processed crap out of their diets. Still a long way to go but now she's networking and finding funding for their school's unused greenhouse to get it back up and running and adding an aquaponic section. The kids will be the workforce and will be part of their science curriculum and it will lower the produce budget for the school -- it's a win-win for everyone!!

Congratulations. You took a very innovative idea and used it to teach the kids work ethic and healthy eating. You did the exact same thing Newt was criticized for, you just did it with a PC subject.
You took a school project and made it sustainable, teachable and beneficial to the community.

+Thuy-Linh Pollack Thumbs down on a video like this would come from individuals who may not see the value that Urban Farming can bring. Their loss and our gain. From what I can see the discussion thread for this presentation is dominated by *positive* responses. Let's try to keep it that way.

I agree with what you're saying. I'm just saying that these kids have to feel inspired (motivated) before they will even attempt to better themselves and feel motivated enough to learn the other arts and academics. I just thought this was brilliant how this teacher's ideas reached that spark in these kids minds - kids that were maybe thinking they'll never be anything. The beginning of success for them is to be inspired by something - and for these kids, it was this teacher's ideas.

It's a two way street. As more of us grow veggies ourselves, then less and less will buy from the food shops causing a financial catastrophe for food shops and rural farms. But I'm not buying lettuce anymore, I'm growing it, and thats the future!

These kids have teachers that try to teach them those things first -- trust me. They ain't listening. They're not interested! Teach them to do FUN things that better the world and they will be inspired. They're not clapping to a slavemaster....get that fucking chip off your shoulder!

I love his passion. But the are many reasons for things, just not "why not". Why not try to teach kids agriculture and to build a farm in your backyard? Why not try to kids engineering and manufacture a Chevrolet in your backyard? Some places are better suited than others depending on the task. Last summer I spent $95 for what was a jar of bad salsa.
Love what he's done for those kids. Just be realistic.

Wow, this lecture is full of dangerous superior, inferior stereotyping; talk about bigoted conditioning as the unintended side effect of charity. Although easily disguised through fast talk, Stephen Ritz constantly associates characteristics such as poor, immigrant, grafiti making, over procreating, homeless, can't be "white," with mostly Mexican but also other Latin Americans. What is more, although the exact word is "brownfield," Mr. Ritz quickly spews out this list―black-field, brownfield, toxic-waste-field, battlefield―thus associating toxic waste and violence with the terms, black and brown. This same insidious, subliminal technique was cleverly used by the Nazis to grow bigotry against the Jews. So, although, on the surface, this lecture appears to be about a helpful NGO that is addressing the needs of the poor, dig deeper, because deeper is where the danger lies; deeper is the root-cause of bigotry; deeper are the subliminal bigoted associations that are insidiously conditioning the minds of powerful men like Donald Trump.
