P.D. James was 72 years old when she published this book. After a long career being known as a crime fiction writer, she crafted this utterly compelling story of the near future. Then to have it be turned into a masterpiece of a movie, by the incredible Alfonso Cuaron, during her lifetime.

They do show (or at least imply) how the Fishes tracked Theo to Jasper's, but you have to be watching very closely. In the scene where Theo first takes the train to meet Jasper, the guy sitting behind him on the train is one of them, so they already know that Jasper's house is somewhere he would go to hide. It's not something you'd be likely to notice on first viewing (because at that point in the movie he's just a random guy that doesn't do anything to call attention to himself), but it's there.

I had forgotten how stressful this movie is. It isn't a full-throttle action film, but it beats them all for sheer tension. And I love that it's gritty and realistic, but hopeful; the best of us will triumph over our worst nature.

  • @Justin_Leone
    @Justin_Leone ปีที่แล้ว +10

One aspect of this movie that I rarely see mentioned, and which I credit for being the key reason it excels in building tension, is that the movie never strays from Theo's point of view for even a minute. We never get any exposition that he doesn't or see anything that he isn't aware of. Therefore, we never know what his adversaries are doing when they're offscreen, and don't know what to expect around the next corner. While most movies would use foreshadowing to present tension, this one repeatedly builds it naturally by keeping Theo, and the audience, in the dark and utterly unprepared.

@@mintjulius275compare the views this gets to other "classics" they've covered.
I think it might be due to the fact that it's not American.
Quite a few movies have had to change to appeal more to the lowest common denominator American audience.
Master and Commander had to change the war the book is based on so that America wouldn't end up portraying the "bad" guys in a movie.
I'm not saying this is all Americans simply the studios tailoring movies to appeal to the largest home audience who tend to only watch America based movies starring people they know and relate to.
Children of Men was a hard sell initially for that audience but more and more people are finally getting round to watching it so it's reputation has grown steadily over the decades

Alfonso Cuaron did right leaving Harry Potter after the 3rd movie.
Usually when you see a small budget director going from small budget to big budget, he usually wants to stay in the big budget territory, sometimes making sequels or similar movies.
Cuaron avoided that, and instead used his experience on big budget movies to explore other genres and try different things.
I love a director that explores different genres. Is usually what leads to a lasting career.

Those super long takes must have been so hard to time and plan out, but man do they make the tension so heavy. This film, along with "Arrival" and "Dune: Part 1" are all pretty much tied for me as the best sci-fi films of the 21st century, and of all-time when you get down to it. This is the only one of those three I never got to see in the theater. I just missed it recently at the New Beverly, but hope to see it on a big screen one day.

There's an important detail that happens after the credits in this movie: as the music finishes playing, you can hear the very distinct sound of children laughing and playing. The implication is supposed to be that humanity's reproductive capability will eventually return, either because of the Human Project's research or because Kee was the first of many women who will 'miraculously' regain their fertility.

The scene with Theo and his brother was set at Battersea Power Station... you can see a huge floating pig in the background, this is a reference to the cover of Pink Floyd's album Animals, which has an inflated pig floating over this building. There's a famous story of how it got free of it's tethers, and floated off (even forcing Heathrow to cancel their flights), before landing many miles away, giving new meaning to the phrase 'when pigs fly'!

I saw this movie a long time ago and I didn't particularly like it that much. Don't get me wrong, it's incredibly suspenseful, has some great action scenes, and the cast is fantastic across the board, but it's just too depressing for my taste. It's strange, you'd think a movie about a future society where people can longer carelessly breed like locusts would be much more feel-good and utopian, but goes in the other direction. Also, I still don't understand why Luke wanted to kill Theo. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, but that never made sense to me.

"where people can longer carelessly breed like locusts would be much more feel-good", you think the end of the human race is feel good?

@@jamesrustles8670 I suppose it's not a good thing in the long run, but given the current state of the world, it wouldn't be worst thing either.
