(Although I am very bummed that we never learned more about this version of Van Helsing's backstory--though I think it is a teeny bit clear they were angling for angel or angel-like being, *especially* if you read the novelization where it mentions scars on his back--leaving it that mysterious lets people come up with their own theories :D)

@@minnie9107some of the only ones I could even begin to imagine is dog soldiers for its practical effects or some newer movies that were okay but wouldn’t lay a finger on Jackmans werewolf, a good one is “werewolf: the beast among us”
But genuinely my mom showed me werwolves before I was in kindergarten so werewolves have always been my favorite. I’ll go out of my way sometimes to watch a single episode of a foreign show because I’ve heard it has a decent werewolf in it. From the budget films with shitty masks that are just downright awful to 80s, 90s, to present day I’ve watched just about all of them. Still gotta say van helsing is my favorite picturing of the body type of a werewolf but, underworld: rise of the lycans is a super super close second because it’s cgi and practical effects taking place in a time where there were no guns makes them just that scarier since you have to use swords and arrows. A good werewolf just truly needs to have an elongated snout and stand on just hind legs. None of the twilight dire wolf looking bs. Only movies I can really name that can pull the flattened face off are the original and remake of the wolf man purely because that was how they intended it based off the original.
End of violently stoned werewolf rant (p.s. the difference in amount of werewolf movies and shows compared to vampires just makes me feel like no one else really wants more like me☹️ )

My brother and I's favorite movie growing up. We watched this endlessly. Still do every now and then.
The creatures design in this is TOP NOTCH. I don't think there has ever been a better werewolf design.

This movie was particularly special to me because I know the guy who drew the monsters for it. He did the monsters for both live action Scooby Doo's as well.

Love Van Helsing. There is an animated Van Helsing that acts like a prequel to this movie. Hugh Jackman is voicing the character.

One of my favorite Hugh Jackman movies. It really blew my mind to learn that Robbie Coltrane (AKA Harry Potter's Rubeus Hagrid) did the voice and facial motion capture modeling for Mr. Hyde.
I love the brides, Van Helsing's werewolf form and the look of Frankenstein's Monster

Glad you guys enjoy it! I had so much fun with it and the werewolf transition impressed me even though I was quite young back then and the story idea of Dracula trying to bring their children to life is quite interesting too. Might not be a greatest movie of all time, but surely a very enjoyable one!

van healing is one of my favorite ‘campy’ movies - love that you guys had fun watching it!
penny dreadful is a three season, 27 episode show that does the same thing as van helsing in combining different gothic stories/beasts: dracula, dorian gray, frankenstein, frankensteins monster, witches, and dr jekyll/mr hyde. it’s dark, but absolutely incredible!

I would love to recommend “The league of extraordinary gentleman” because it has the same “vibe” and visual effects of Van Helsing. However I’m conscious that it’s not too popular among the crowd 🥴 Anyway, I love that film and it has a lot of literature references just like Van Helsing!

Van Helsing character originated from Bram Stoker's Dracula, the most influential vampire fiction ever written. Which goes without saying, you should react to the movie as well!
This a rare genre combining elements of steampunk/gothic, fantasy, and action/adventure. The other movie similar to this that I can think of is 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' (starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton!). The movie kinda went under the radar but if you guys like guns, that movie is a steampunk guns galore 😂 It's fkin awesome.

I will never understand why this movie gets poor critic reviews. It's SO GOOD, especially for 2004. It's not perfect but for me it is, I'd watch this movie at least once or twice a month every year for years. It's a movie that never goes out of style and honestly one of the best dark fantasy movies to ever be created IMO. Forever a classic.

Van Helsing is what the Universal Monster-verse should have been.
Make it a TV series, give it a big overarching through line , with each season having a more focused story for each of the big badd monsters, and sprinkle some others throughout for flavour.

I loved this movie as a teenager. So many great lady characters. The monster designs were really neat. I now use the skin care line from the model who played Marishka (the blonde bride who dies first). She has an argan oil skin care, it works very well for me. As long as it doesn't involve blood, beauty advice from a vampire is pretty solid 😂😂😂

    A bit of a bonus I know you'll like.
Hyde was portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and Jekyll by Dwight Schultz (Murdock from The A Team)
Carl (Van Helsing's monk buddy) is David Wenham, aka Faramir in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

From monster design to casting to writing this movie is just a blast to watch. Humorous, yet still filled with an assortment of feeling and action. The music also deserves an honorable mention. It's not by any means a great movie, but it's a solid watch with some incredible scenes and choices when it comes to world design.

"I'm staring at him! Is that a man?"

This movie always reminds me of the first time I ever went to Universal Hollywood for Halloween. There was a Van Helsing haunted house you could walk through. Specifically Draculas fortress. The movie just came out, so it was very popular. At the end of the maze you get chased by a 7 foot werewolf that looked like the one in this and it was terrifying! The affects were amazing for the time. 😅 Had to have been 2005 or 2006. So fun. I think there’s still videos of it online.

I always go back and find myself randomly watching this, and I mean look at Hugh and Kate they are amazing. I think the CGI was amazing for the time honestly mixed with some practical, I loved that Dracula walked up the wall just so casual while talking, Frankenstein’s monster honestly being a sweet heart, and the BRIDESSSSS 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 love this love happy you guys enjoyed it.

Love this movie! Tots classic. Since you guys asked about how comfortable and combat efficient latex/leather was in the last one I’ll gladly answer the next goth question regarding absinthe. As far as flammability goes, it is incredibly flammable. I use it for witchcraft myself and use it during offerings or herbal burnings and rituals. It’s extremely high content alcohol, mine I use is Lucid, at a whopping 62%. Not to mention that’s Americanized and wildly toned down. The original that you can get in Europe can range depending but it easily can compete with moonshine and has interesting effects. It has a black licorice flavor and is often green in color, but the original ones have hallucinational effects due to being brewed in copper if it’s the old school way but also it’s use of wormwood, a potent herb that also happens to have its uses in witchcraft. Absinthe has gained a reputation among horror movies and literature as something only a monster can handle as it only takes a cup or two to knock you down if you’re not careful. Most famous brand of it is known as the green fairy absinthe as drinkers famously report seeing a green fairy flying around them. This drink is a synonymous with goth and horror alike and is a gothic must try as far as alcoholic beverages go.
