Osha drawing the symbol of the jedi order was a nice touch to it. I like that they're not scared of introducing other interpretations of the force not only the jedi and sith perspective.

I had most of the same thoughts about what happened in this episode. Nothing out of the blue in term of lore, nothing highlighted with an agenda, Star Wars is not broken. Just some Star Wars out of the Skywalker saga.
The series slowly grows on me as the plot unfolds. It is not perfect but it is mostly very good and well done. This could still take a turn in the next episodes but at this point, I am satisfied and curious enough to watch the rest of the show. Stopping here would be like heading out of the theater halfway thru the movie.

Yeah, I thought this episode REALLY under-delivered on the promise of ruining Star Wars forever. There's some weird stuff with the children and some things that happened that still need more context, but none of this was "change Star Wars as we know it" level of groundbreaking,
People crying about it weren't thinking in a "groundbreaking" way. They just hate to hate.

There’s more to the flashback, it’s Oshas and Sols version of what happened, think of Luke and kylos flashbacks, they were different depending on the point of view , there was definitely nothing in that flashback to show so much guilt that dude poisoned himself for absolution
Just think Rashomon - this episode is basically Osha's pov, with input from what she was told. (Really, Mae lit up the entire place with a single lamp?)

That’s a great point. Tell you the truth the writing on this episode feels just like Lucas’s writing in the prequels. Which is hilarious because the people that dislike this love the prequels.
It's interesting: I really wonder how this episode would have been perceived absent all that "Star Wars will be forever changed" hype(?) that preceded this one. I had heard the same rumblings, a la 'Shadow Warrior' from 'Ahsoka', and to be blatantly transparent, that tainted my expectations, no matter how hard I tried going in open-minded like I have with the show from the start. Really fascinating study in fandom.
Honestly, I think this show is fine. It's not knocking it out of the park, but it's not bad either, and I for one am stoked to be getting to see a chapter of the galaxy's story we haven't heard before. I just wish we could find some ragamuffin Force users who weren't coerced into joining an ideological organization the minute there's a sniff of sensitivity to them. There have to be more Force users out there than just Jedi, Sith, or witches; it feels like a lack of creativity to fall back on those three groups every time.
But that's a small quibble; looking forward to more, and looking forward to more reactions from you (and maybe someday more of the Smols fam again)!
It doesn’t actually change or do anything. It’s okay to dislike it. You can’t like everything. I actually think it’s good. My only issue is how people talk about it. The criticism is so bad faith it actually makes Disney sympathetic which I thought was impossible.
An excerpt in the trailer shows that the witches all have black eyes. This means a witch has taken control of everyone and probably some of the Jedi like Kelnacca and Torbin who fight each other in the trailer. In the ship at the end you can see Torbin's bloody scar on his face, which is fresh. Greetings from Germany😊
They actually never said how they did it. We don’t even know if they are reliable narrators. There could easily been a father. It’s only episode 3.

I see the Force as an intergalactic force and the Jedi are just a people that learned to use and manipulate the force, or if you will, go with the will of the Force. I don't see the Jedi as the only ones that learned to tap the Force. I feel that the will of the Force is interconnected with the Jedi and Sith no matter what. Witches can tap the Force, but they manipulate the Force while the Jedi flows with the will of the force. The episode was good. I'm not mad. How can i? I've accepted the Nightsisters a long time ago. I'm still watching the show. Star Wars is for everyone, not just me. There are many stories in this universe to be had. To me, new star wars is new star wars and i'm happy.
Very good reaction and review. I have been a Star Wars fan for 47 years. I only see an intriguing Star Wars "who done it". Many questions are yet to be answered.
The witches with what they believe and what they have done only serves to enhance the Star Wars universe, not ruin it.

8:17 One has an affinity to the Light Side of the Force while the other has an affinity to the Dark Side. Considering that they are twins created via the Force it makes sense that they would be two sides of the same coin. Darth Plageuis likely learned from this story when creating Anakin to make a single child and not two, probably for the trouble that is going to come of this creation, Anakin is the balance the Jedi sought, the Sith too, though they didn't seek balance, but absolute control.
16:06 Say what you will about Jedi "taking" children from their families at a young age, but we should take note of how these children feel/felt--Osha always felt that she was different, and Sol did too, even at the young age of four. Is a four-year-old capable of making life-changing choices? Not in our world! But this is Star Wars and those attuned to the Force hear the call and answer accordingly. We saw it in Anakin, helping people he didn't know because it was the right thing to do. We saw it with baby Ahsoka when the Force helped her sway the sabretooth tiger-looking creature to return her to her family. The Force has a way of helping people make choices they normally wouldn't make on their own. Mother Aniseya saw this too; I think they all did but refused to see it for what it was because they (the witches) were a persecuted lot who were few in number; they had lost so many and couldn't bear to lose another, another who was supposed to be their future ='(
In the end, however, it was agreed to let Osha go--she was packed and was heading out when Mea set everything off.

As I said earlier, Darth Plageuis learned the technique to create life, a powerful life conceived through the Force, from somewhere and it was likely from these witches. I'm not saying Darth Plageuis is the Sith Lord, I don't know who the Sith is, but I do think that technique was learned from these witches.
20:40 This story was mainly told from Osha's perspective. What's Mae side of this story? Did the witches only fear the Jedi or was there something else in those woods? Mae started the fire, but the explosion that took out her coven was something other than fire. Just before the Jedi interrupted the ascension, lower-ranking witches claimed the Jedi sliced the platform, but how do the witches know what Jedi look like? How would they know a Jedi from a Sith? They dress similarly, carry the same weapon, and wield the same power. It would be easy to mistake one for the other, especially if the universe hasn't seen a Sith for millennia. Ki-Adi-Mundi told us in the Phantom Menace, which takes place exactly 100 years after this story, that the Sith have been out of the picture for a very long time. It was later revealed that Mace and Yoda had their doubts about what Ki-Adi-Mundi had said earlier, but the general consensus among the Jedi Council was that the Sith were gone. What the Jedi believed was the shared beliefs of the Galactic Republic and its citizens. The witches took up defensive positions and were ready to repel the Jedi. The Jedi didn't walk in, expecting a fight; they came in to talk--seems to me that someone arrived before the Jedi and that someone took advantage of the situation.
21:10 I don't know if it works that way with Sol. To me Sol is like Ezra, but with children. We saw him training Jedi younglings like Yoda. On Brendok, Sol, was the one that took the lead, while it looked very much like Master Indara was the higher-ranking Jedi. In the same way, Ezra has a natural connection to animals, it looks like Sol does with children.

Rebels showed us that Palpatine was constantly looking for and collecting things to empower him, one thing in particular that would have been a huge game changer was the World Between Worlds. No matter how this story ends up playing out, splitting the Force between the two didn't work out for the witches.

Splitting these two up was a mistake, but they were always on different trajectories. The story of Osha and Mae was likely a Sith cautionary tale.
Osha and Mae were born under twin moons, one dark, and one light, like the Yin and Yang symbol.
Anakin was born under twin suns...Son of Suns, a coincidence?
I have been following your reactions for a good while and I praise your good faith reaction and analysis. Thats how you know who is engaging in bad faith with the content. And its not because of the writing or whatever technical aspects because SW under Lucas was never about peak writing or traditional filmmaking. He is a visual storyteller and used dialogue almost as sound, etc.
In this episode we saw nothing new to SW. The Force has many names in different cultures. The Lasat call it "The spirit of the universe" for instance. And they too realize some chants... Even Sidious when using sith alchemy. Same is done by the Witches of Dathomir who arguably use the Force or magick in more radically different ways like creating blades or affecting matter like when Talzin used some battle droids for Maul new legs. Loth wolves can move through time and space too.
The Light and Dark side of the Force are bigger than the Jedi and Sith religions. That always has been the case. Qui-Gon learned from the Force priestesses about how to preserve his conscience after death through the Living Force. Well can it be that Plagueis learned about how influence midichlorians from a coven of Witches. Sidious himself had dealings with the witches of Dathomir. Some of these bad faith critics argue with the Darth Plagueis in their hand.. a book that is not canon and so not officially bounding the creation of new content... Anyways, I have been enjoying the show a lot honestly. Specially to see the Jedi inner workings and the stuff about Republic law giving them some sort of exclusive right on force users, I thought it was a good addition to build towards the lost way of the Order in the time of the Prequels, and same goes for the blood tests and having a minimum midichlorian count to enter to the Order. George is well versed in antropology and sociology and how institutions work and can lose their way so its an interesting aspect to delve into. Keep up the good work!
I was already expecting a flashback after Sol started his investigation so I think this episode was really cool. Got no problem with the witches because we've seen them on every animated star wars basically and in Ahsoka too. But my only question is why make the chosen one prophecy less important by introducing other special kids who were created by the force? If Anakin is not the first one then why is Anakin special? That's the only thing i thought was a little weird. Because if there were more children born of the force with no fathers who became jedi before then how would the jedi be able to tell the difference between who is the one supposed to bring balance to the force and who's not? Besides that, pretty cool backstory. There's no reason to try to copy the prequels tho.
The only way I reconcile that is by what Palpatine said to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. "The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider unnatural." And his comments about Darth Plagueis being so powerful that he could influence the midichlorians to create life.
The witches manipulated the force through the dark side to create life. While the force itself created Anakin as the chosen one.
I don't know the intent of the writers, but if they were trying to diminish the fatherless Force birth of Anakin, they failed.

You said it yourself. There are people in the galaxy who use the force differently. That's the problem. Some people believe the six films are canon, The Jedi and the Sith! No one else uses the force, period! I said it before and I repeat it. George Lucas sold LucasFilm to Disney for four billion dollars! In an interview, I saw he said. He didn't care for the direction Disney was taking "Star Wars". But he said, "They owned it".

I’m a 50 yr old OG fan myself - same vintage as you 🤣🤣 For someone who says they don’t do spoilers on the new Star Wars material, you’ve given a pacifying disclaimer for every episode of this series, because it sounds like you’ve heard some stuff. This is your channel and you don’t have to justify your reaction. That’s why we tune in in the first place! I agree, the fandom can be real jerks sometimes but, dude… you do you, I don’t think you’re gonna change those people’s minds.
I’m pretty sure that the episode everyone is saying is “a game changer” is episode 5, according to Eric Voss, who interviewed the show runner. I know you watch New Rockstars, so I don’t feel like I’m spoiling anything. Is there a chance you confused about which episode people are up in arms about?
No, I'm not the only one saying episode 3. And while there may be spoilers or rumors out for episode 5, it's only the first 4 episodes that were shown. The big thing that was supposed to "fundamentally change Star Wars" was the force birth of the twins. I admit in my comments after the reaction that this was the spoiler I heard , so I was somewhat prepared for it. And I'm not interested in changing anyone's mind as that is typically a lost cause. I just want to watch and enjoy new Star Wars...whether it's good or not... I'll enjoy the experience and I'm glad to share with you!

Honestly I’m a OG fan when Phantom menace came out I was so excited and when I finally saw it I was devastated. I thought Lucas destroyed my childhood and I thought I would never watch Star Wars again I mean it was embarrassing I even signed a petition that was online to kill Jar jar before episode 2. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened if TH-cam existed when the prequels came out. Then I realized how ridiculous I was being. And decided I would just take it as it is. Now I just enjoy it. I’m 44. Nothing compares to the original trilogy to me and that’s okay. I just want people to be honest. It’s gotten so bad It’s turned into bullying.
I agree, for it to kill star wars, it must fundamentally change something about the movies in a bad way. So far, it didn't really do that.

Also, some say the jedi act like child predators, that is just nonsense. Imagine seeing witches somehow got hold on 2 kids and train them in witchcraft. That would make everyone doubt their agenda & atleast find out what's going on.
Serious question, why is it the dark side of the force? What makes it dark?
There are explanations of that mainly from Yoda in Empire Strikes Back. But we also see it play out in the prequels. The Sith freely admit they prefer and use the dark side of the force because it gives them more power. Typically the dark side is associated with anger, fear, aggression. Selfish gain.
The Jedi struggle against the temptations of the dark side which is largely why their ways are more strict and dogmatic. Again, that doesn't mean they are right...but that is the lore created by George Lucas.
Ok, but what makes what the coven is doing the dark side? It doesn't seem inherently sinister.
Explained by Palpatine to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. I mentioned this in my comments after the episode.
not like plagueis searched the galaxy to do this and failed, one of the strongest siths ever, thats the issue, they couldnt even save themselves from a fire and somehow is stronger than him. its a mockery, also the jedi would never spy and be so tied up on two random kids that btw are the age of anakin who was denied training only to be changed by qui gons death.
I'm starting to think the writers of this show does not know how fire works. Like out of all the locations they can use to start a fire, WHY outside of a spaceship and WHY in stone mountain base. In episode 1, they could have made Osha fix an issue in the engine bay within the ship and have the fire start there, there was no need to go outside the ship if they really wanted Osha to show some trauma from seeing the fire. Now with this episode, why not pick a location with flammable structures like a log cabins in a forest or straw huts? WHY in the heck did they pick this most unlikely place where a fire would never spread to tell a crucial part of the flashback that started this whole thing.
This doesn't charge anything for the lore especially if you read the Darth Plagueis legends book and I know the showrunner is a fan of the legends books

Im all for canon breaking lore devastation if it's an interesting story. This one has been a bit uninspired.
You say they came in peace. Let's see, they broke in to the covens' place in the middle of the night, interrupt their religious ceremony, advise them of daring to break republic law by teaching children how to use the force, reminded them they consider it their right to test children... Of course the coven members were hostile. Wouldn't you be?
Fair points. But right or wrong, I do believe it is common practice for the Jedi to locate force users...and I'm sure they saw this as the best opportunity to both find those force sensitive kids and possibly end what they perceive to be a threat the peace and justice in the galaxy. Again, I'm not saying it's right or wrong but that is their history.
As for coming in peace, they were non threatening in their approach and not aggressive. Sure timing sucked but again they probably saw this as their best opportunity.
How could they be non threatening having broken into someone's home? (Something like "the Jedi have sliced their way in")
Because they're not raising their voices doesn't make them non threatening.
@MrNathansdad this will be my last response because it seems your missing my point! I said "fair points" ton your first comment. You are correct. My point though was that, during my reaction, I was fearful that they would come in aggressively. Light sabers and all. Which would be unlike the Jedi. When they came in calm and "non threatening" that is what I meant by "coming in peace." Maybe poor choice of words in my spontaneous reaction and first thoughts. Of course the witches would be on the defensive. But I'm also not a jedi hater which seems to be what this story is going to push. Hence my fears and comments.

How did Disney "ruin Star Wars?" I don't think The Acolyte is anything special, but how does it ruin Star Wars? I can absolutely love watching the OT and PT and The Clone Wars and not even think about the Acolyte, or any other Disney era Star Wars. If I, or you and anyone else doesn't like something, then don't like it. But how does anyone reach the conclusion that Star Wars is ruined? Maybe the prospect of future Star Wars being good is ruined? I can understand that line of thinking. But nothing will ever ruin the Star Wars I know and love. I will not let them take that from me.
Funny because when the prequels came out people said the same thing. That Jar Jar and the writing ruined Star Wars and that Lucas should be banned from making Star Wars again. He was very lucky there was no real social media. But guess what? It sure didn’t ruin it
As far as Anakin is concerned with him being the chosen one, I've always had a problem with the fact so many people forgave him for murdering that's right murdering little children for a totally selfish reasons, so he can hold on to the woman he loved! Then killing Palpatine again for selfish reasons ,to save his son not because it was the right thing to do long before that moment ,and by the way I have little sympathy for Padme because she stayed with him after he murdered a bunch of children and that's the sand people's children! So she knew what kind of person she was getting in to bed with a child murderer! So he was fully invested in the dark side he is a space Nazi as Darth Vader!!He's responsible for the death of trillions of sentient life forms several whole civilizations so he's straight up evil! If he had molested those children instead of killing them with a sword, would people be so willing to forgive him? Yeah I didn't think so but somehow murdering them is forgivable, not in my book! But Ahsoka solve that he is now the balance of the force he's doing what he also was offered to do and that's to take the place of the father as an embodiment of a balance between good and evil as Ahsoka has embodied the daughter and the light side of the force. Because you can't have a one-sided coin you have the yin and yang you have the dark and the light so he has an evil side and a light side because he is the balance of the force. Another problem I have always had with the Jedi is they think that light can overcome Darkness, and it's somehow destroying the dark side of the force is possible, just like the Sith think that Darkness can overcome light they again are two sides of the same coin you can't have a one-sided coin you can't have an inside without an outside a up without a down and left without a right these things that we call opposite seemingly separate , but what they really are extreme poles of the same thing like the two poles of a magnet!That's what Anakin has become somebody who embodies the Light Side of the force as Anakin Skywalker and the dark side of the force as Darth Vader, so he can walk that Razors Edge of balance and that's what he was prophesized to do bring balance to the force! Not destroy the dark side like this Yoda said a prophecy that they may have misinterpreted. Palpatine said some would consider it to be unnatural ,just like some people today would consider witchcraft or Pagan religions especially if you're a Conservative Christian to be evil or unnatural or be considered dark magic! Watch Kyle Katerians reaction this guy is well versed in the Star Wars lore, far more than both you and I. There's nothing wrong with constructive criticism but the oh my God everything that I don't like is woke which I still haven't gotten a definition of! Because it includes people of color people or who have different sexual orientations. Or have issues with feminism or powerful women, so to them this Somehow invalidates it so they bomb Rotten Tomatoes even before it ever premieres, so they came into it with a predisposed negativity to dislike it no matter what and my question to them is who the hell is forcing you to watch it no one that's how they make their money and their clicks cuz they're literally are a huge chunk of the Star Wars so-called fan base that don't like Disney Star Wars some for legit reasons but most because they are overwhelmingly white right of Center politically men who have an issue again with diversity! And let's make it clear you can have legit problems with the show that have nothing to do with the politics behind the show or who the Creator is!
