    One of the few homemade engines I've seen with straight flywheels....janky flywheels burn my bacon.
    I like your rocker/latchout mechanism. Really cool engine!
    Thanks for posting.

    You sir are a master craftsman for sure. Great work. Your videos have become some of my favorite on TH-cam. Thanks for taking the time to make and post them.

    Very impressive! I saw one of these type engines running an ice cream mixer at the Hatch Chile festival.....

    @myfordboy  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @fairyheli2 Not quite. The shape of the cam means the engine can only fire every 8 stokes instead of the normal 4. Additionaly there is a govenor which reduces the number of fire strokes further.

  • @myfordboy
    @myfordboy  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ziiofswe Its definetly hit and miss. The wieght in the flywheel operates the catch you can see at 0:47 and prevents the engine firing when the required speed is reached ( exhaust valve held open).
    Additionaly the cam is driven at 1/4 crankshaft speed instead of the usual 1/2 speed. The shape of the cam gives the 8 cycles which are inlet commpresion, ignition, exhaust, exhaust, exhaus,t exhaust, exhaust.
    So the engine can never fire every 4 cycles even if the govenor has released the catch.

    @seelder Its the backlash of the gears, the engine is running with no load.. If there was a pump connected to it, it would be much quieter

    @gwheyduke Its greensand not Petrobond. Yes all castings are aluminium.Cylinders have cast iron liners, all roatating parts are bushed.

    Excellent job! Could not tell this from the real thing if you weren't told! Selling a casting kit for that would make big money...

    those gears are turning the same direction!!
    in all seriousness though, very nice
    and how easy is it to make your own castings?

    nice little model sounds like the big brother

    Very nice work! Are you using Petro bond (oil) sand for your castings? Are all of your castings aluminium?

    Great job and a fine runner too. It appears a giant was starting this engine. Later, Rick.

    @myfordboy Uhm.. from your description it sounds like it isn't really a hit and miss engine?
    But in the video at 0:47 it seems to work like an ordinary hit and miss.. or do you mean that even at full load (when the rpm regulator doesn't allow any "missing") it will only "hit" every 4th turn?
    A little side note: I've noticed many people don't get that a hit and miss engine will fire a lot more often when under load, it will basically run like your average 1-cylinder engine, "hitting" every time.

    We were recently in Australia, our friend's neighbour has an original Aermotor that I was lucky enough to see running, the sound is identical. He has a fantastic collection of various engines and vehicles, the Aermotor was certainly the pick of the bunch for me. Do you still sell the castings and plans?

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can still do castings and plans. In fact today I started a set bound for the US for a builder who also has a full size engine

      @myfordboy I must confess I fancy building one up, such a unique setup, however It'd be beyond me to complete the rest of the machining necessary. I find the whole process fascinating and kind of wish I'd gotten into this instead of my Mechanic's apprenticeship (many moons ago). It's great to hear you're still making them!

    Ah! propane that explains why it is so quiet the one to ones can be heard for quite
    some distance.(drip Gas/white gas?)
    Thank you for many hours of education. yes and some entertainment.
    You must love your hobby very much.

    i am using Butane gas for convenience but another model has been made and runs on petrol (gasoline). It's a basic IC engine so should run on various fuels.

    Interesting seeing the eccentric hole pattern on the output drive gear to adjust for different pump strokes.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • @av8tor17b
    @av8tor17b 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outstanding! Do you think it could run on other fuels? I am thinking specifically of E85. I'd love to build a model that ran E85 on 8-cycle, and does higher compressions, maybe even turbo, to prove out the concept of a ultra-high MPG on E85 possibility. Your thoughts?

    @seelder The full size engine makes the same noise.

  • @myfordboy
    @myfordboy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JaapGrootveld The letters are added to the pattern. The ones you see on this engine are plastic letters sold specificaly for this application. On the Monitor engine there is a logo on the fuel tank that was made by cutting the design from plasticard. The large letters on my Stickney engine are cut from cardboard.

  • @myfordboy
    @myfordboy  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    No reason why a working model could not be made.
    You would probable need access to the full size engine though to get the dimentions.

  • @ziiofswe

    @myfordboy Half speed camshaft, got it.
    I think I also got a bit confused by the terminology (after all, English isn't my primary language...)
    Cycles.. Strokes.. "4 stroke engine".. so a complete _cycle_ should then mean 2 complete turns of the crankshaft, the way I use the word "cycle". :)
    Did some googling and it seems that in the English language it's not uncommon to call it 4 cycle engine instead of 4 stroke... So I learned something today too. :P

      I can make castings and plans available if there is enough interest to make drawing up the plans worthwhile. I could then show the machining.
