I know somebody that bought a 2015 WRX STI new off the lot and that car spent more time in the shop than it ever did on the road it had so many random electrical problems and clutch issues he sold it within 2 years of owning it
Not a sports car but we bought a '91 Loyale Wagon 4WD new (manual), first car we ever owned with ac and electric windows but that little flat four was oil starved on anything resembling a turn and was recalled to install some kind of baffle.
I'm a daily driver for 8 1/2 years of an RX-8. They are super reliable IF you get a Series II (2009-2011) with its improved oil ports (3 versus just 2) and it's electronic OMP system. Plus, almost all of the other problems with the Series I were solved - better clutch pedal, faster starter motor, more reliable electric steering, better cat, etc. The only missing upgrade that I did was put more robust coils in it.
Turbo subarus dont have headgasket issues. Infact the stock turbo mls gaskets have been known to hold over 600whp. Non turbo ejs had hg issues. Turbo ejs have bearing and ringland issues. Yall research this one at all?
A Subaru is totally reliable if serviced as per log book, and driven with Respect, Plus, not being over modified. I have just taken delivery of a new 2023 WRX this is now my 5th new WRX and i have Never had a engine issue 👍 Au
JDM subaru sti's uses the ej207, no such issues...the ej257 were for export market and yes they do have ringland issues, get those forged and tuned properly they be reliable
@@youngesttre9554no they dont “all have.” Literally the revup vq35 was known to have oil comp problems in which many owners didnt even experience at all. The VQ does have a piston ring/side wall clearance issue but thats about all. Some of the early 37VHR ones had paper head gaskets that caused it to leak coolant and mix oil and the gallery gaskets going bad. But theres been boosted DEs and tuned DEs with no issues lol
@@youngesttre9554that's not the DE, that's the Revup 05/06. The DE is super reliable, I never had problems with my 350z after 145k miles, I've seen them with 300k miles on the odometer, there's a reason there's still so many old 350s and G35s still on the road
Sounds a lot to me like the owners do not know how to take care of these cars. Edit: I own a subaru and it has been nothing but good to me, and made no big issues in the past 3 years I owned it
@@butcheredalive That happens to indeed be the case with a mix of bad maintenance. But there ware many other ways to make a car faster too. Edit: I mean without touching the engine
This video reads like a "what JDM sports cars are popular to hate on" compilation. Most of these issues are way overblown. Hell, half the engines on here are on here for early production faults that ended up getting fixed, by that logic, let's throw the k24 and early VQ35 and VQ40's on here for early production timing chain issues. And the subarus most affected by head gasket issues were early NON-TURBO EJ25's. Most of the head gasket and ring land issues reported were by people who got their subaru and immediately plugged in an access port to up the boost without supporting mods. Keep the power near stock and it'll generally treat you well, or be prepared to spend big bucks on forged internals, front mount intercoolers, improved oiling, baffled oil pan, and a REALLY good tune. There isn't a middle ground there You want bad japanese engines? Nissan ZD30, Subaru EE20, arguably the current Honda L15, Mazda MZR (if ypu want to count it as japanese), plenty of mitsubishi engines, to name a few
Every engine on the list with "sludge build up" is neglected from owners failing to change the oil in a timely manner. Even the manufacturers recommended oil change intervals aren't enough. 2500 - 3000 miles, you should be changing your oil, especially if you're dogging it
I knew the Renesis would be here. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Everything mentioned can happen to any engine. Over boost it and it pops, carbon build up makes piston rings fail too, not enough fuel causes detonation. Things like the oil metering pump failing with no cel to warn you causing oil starvation, needing to premix, early and often oil changes, eating spark plugs and coils, plugging up cats due to premixing, etc are more unique aspects of ownership.
And I was "lucky" enough to own a 1987 Chevy Turbo Sprint (also new, guess what I traded in, an '86 CRX Si, I know, I know, not my best decision but we needed a back seat) with a three cylinder turbo churning out 70 hp but it felt like a binary toggle switch instead of a gas peddle, no transition during acceleration.......
I currently have a 2013 FR-S with a valve spring recall I am going to get it done next week on Wednesday. I will come back to this comment and let you guys know what happens in 3 weeks to a month to see what happened or how it holds up. No I don’t race. It is well taken care of, maintenance is up to date, every fluid is topped off.
How long have you had the car? I'm going to prob get frs in 3 months. Wondering to buy a new 86 or older frs but both must have under 50k miles. Any info would be helpful!!
I've had it for a month already with 82k miles and it feels and sound flawless, as long as you keep the motor stock and maintained, it can last for around 220k miles until you need a tune up again🙌🙌@@cuesunny
@@trd_banco I’ve got one but decided to not have the recall done for a number of reasons. 158k miles and still going strong. Look forward to your update. Best of luck to you. Enjoy the car!
@@stevef3521 I’m glad you commented, I actually lost this video 😂 But basically, I took my car into the Toyota dealership in Antioch for the recall. On a Wednesday morning I arrived at the service center and talked to one of the people, I was explaining to them what the defect was when they exchange the valve springs. What I read was that the technicians over use the sealant on the motor which causes the oil to not flow through correctly when they reassemble it. But they do test drive before they give it back. I also asked if I can take it to Subaru because they are the ones who deals with boxer engines. Short story No, it was Toyotas recall, not Subaru even though they make the engines. So 3 days go by and I received a call and picked up my car, I inspected it first before I left noticing that they changed the oil and can still hear the same ticking sound which is normal. Anyways another month goes by and the engine is still running strong at 87k miles with no check engine lights 👍 Had to explain as much as I could so you could feel better about it😁
You’re showing images of the federalized s2 Elise yet talking about the 1Zz. The Elise ran the 2zz for NA. Get your facts straight before posting this trash. The 2ZR didn’t come into use until 2011 and by then the Elise was no longer imported
Nice to hear! I'm prob going to get one in few months! I won't be tracking it but just daily and some fun rides. Anything I should look for from an owners point?
Everyone is just butthurt that folks are speaking on bad JDM engines. JDM cars are not the Holy Grail of tuner cars despite what the fast and the furious movies made everyone believe. The Lotus Elise DOES NOT use a 1ZZ-FE, it uses a 2ZZ-GE. A higher revving 1.8 liter engine.
You’re right 👌✌️ don’t compare 1zz to 2zz ge performance 😅
And they show à 2zz it doesent have plastic intake plennum like the 2zz aluminium
Elise s uses 1zz, it was not sold in usa
