Today we pit the new GoPro HERO 6 vs its predecessor, HERO 5 Black!
The big updates are frame-rates are (nearly all) doubled, which is kind of amazing! We can now shoot 4K 60 FPS, 2.7K 120 FPS, and 1080p 240 FPS!! All three of those are super impressive and allow you to turn up your filmmaking skills.
Two other major improvements/new features that are my personal favorites, we can turn on Superview while shooting 4K 30fps, this is ultra ultra wide (mostly squeezes more vertical into frame, top and bottom, thus won't look 'wider' in some of my comparison shots, but when viewed in full screen it's very dynamic). And lastly, we can turn on EIS (electronic image stabilization) while shooting 4K30, and GoPro has greatly improved this stabilization. It's now balancing 6-axis, and in certain shots they look buttery smooth!
As for pricing, I don't like they raised it $100 more over the HERO 5 Black, but for some people, it'll be worth the extra IF you'll really notice and use these new features. For me personally, I'll be keeping this new GoPro 6 (bought with my own money), and selling my old HERO 5.

Ouch! Why did they increase the price by $100 dollars? Seems kinda like price gouging but I guess they got control right now. Plus according to your unboxing they gave you less mounts in the box. That's seems kinda shady. But... I will be getting one anyway.

Do you like the new, punchier, saturated colors and contrast? I personally kinda like it, less editing on my part, and the improved dynamic range, stabilization, new shooting frame-rates... I'm gonna keep it!
AuthenTech - Ben Schmanke I always prefer more natural colors. The sky and sand look oversaturated on some of the Hero 6 shots.
Largamelion yes its way over saturated not natural.
I'm interested - does it actually have more dynamic range?! Have you run a test on dynamic range.
I am extremely surprised with the results of your review. Not sure whether you have watched any of the other reviews on TH-cam, but a common theme has been the Hero 6's clips and images for some reason look way darker than that of the Hero 5. So, I have to say I am very confused right now.

I prefer watching a comparision between "Gopro hero 6" and the "iPhone7" or "Iphone8" because iPhone's camera look like the actual place to me the most.
Can't wait to see. By the way, Why your Gopro hero 6 look less blue and less green than other TH-camr? Which is nice cuz I found so many Gp6 video look over blue and green.
From my research, I think there are some defect unit that the screen on the back show white as a bit green and the video color look over compensation.

Wow, the colors are really vibrant! We currently use the Hero 5 Black in our studios to do livestreams and our only complaint with the Hero 5 is the flat color that it returns. Seeing your comparison gives me hope that the Hero 6 Black will be far superior in the colors and that makes a difference especially when kids are watching our channel. Thanks for the awesome review!

5 looks better than 6 from your testing,much natural color,contrast ,more detail in the shadow,and the right image in low light.

wow night and day difference! I use Canon 70D might switch to go pro hero 6 for daily vlogging! How do you rate Audio generally.. you had a comparison there but in general how does go pro audio fare?

@@oldmarty1206 exactly my thoughts. I’ve noticed this in more of his video’s. Stabilization looked great on the hero 6 until there was a new video of the hero 6 vs 7 and suddenly the 6 was all shaking with stabilizing on lol

Yes, since he's pointing out the difference it makes when shooting in 4K. The Hero 5 has no EIS in 4K.

CARdiology No, it's an upgrade to an older device. He is comparing an apple to a polished apple; your example compares an orange to an apple and asks which one is sweeter.
It's a new camera capability so it's an advantage.
Now if he was using a stabilization feature that WASN'T PART OF THE CAMERA, then I would understand what you mean.
Because you simply can't turn on EIS with the 5 when shooting 4k. If you are comparing the riding experience of a V8 mustang with an ecoboost, do you call for the V8 to turn 4 cylinders off lol

Looks like the GP6 is approaching the quality and features of the Sony FDR6000. Image stabilization is so much improved as to be like night and day. Plus the speed features, etc.

First time finding your channel. I’m running the Gopro silver 4 and I’ve been really happy with it but I need slow mo. I'm aware that not every action camera user looks for this, but having an optional date and time display in the corner of the screen of the recorded video that ALL Chinese action camera manufacturers provide is missing on the GoPro. This comes in handy when I wish to film documentary videos. I have suggested this to GoPro's Tech Support for the past several years, but the only reply I have received was, "We have no plans to add this feature." This is a GoPro deal breaker for my use.

Optics looks to be significantly better. Look at the water and grass, i.e. 3:28 part. You can see ripples/waves and grass strands nicely, and color is more blue. Reflections in water also look nice.

Thanks for making this video man. Found out 3 days ago that the Hero 6 cameo out and I had no idea. I think Ima buy it. If not then Ima wait for the next Hero 6 (if they do a silver edition or something) or I will wait for the Hero 7. They just need to work on the battery life and low light more I think.

Why would you compare frame rates at two different speeds side by side? The action shot running at a slower speed is always going to look cooler.
GoPro Hero 6 Black is absolutely worth the upgrade despite the extra $100, it's far more superior in every aspect of performance over Hero 5 & also glad to see they adopted the HEVC codec enabling 4K 60fps & super slow motion videos. Although there are some complaints about muted audio but I think the microphones has more dynamic range sensitivity than it's predecessor, I can't completely agree with the EIS image stabilization can come anything close to using a Gimbal.

A problem with The 6 is that it has a lot of problems, at 1:08 to 1:22 if you look at the tree to the right in The 6 Part, you can see like a line that is blue coming off of The tree. That is why I would get The 5. This is just My opinion btw, everyone else has different opinions.
Is the stabilization on the hero5 at 1080 just as good? Im trying to keep things under budget and I know that I will be shooting in 1080, but that EIS part is sweet!
Is there a 'neutral' colour mode? The saturation on the 6 is way too high, look at the skin tones and the super blue sky. Having a neutral colour helps in post too, trying to fight over saturated footage isn't ideal.

Does anyone else think stabilization has gotten to the point where they no longer seem like 'action' cameras and are now just hyped 'video' cameras?
Very nice video! Right now it seems 1080p 240fps is utter garbage, 2.7k 120fps maybe usable. I do wish you'd look in more detail at differnt FPS and resolutions. People want to find a goto mode, so it's nice to really look at what you sacrifice bumping FPS. I'm really waiting for yi4k+ vs. gopro6 - seems these 2 models are near identical bar the 120fps 2.7k - so the more detail you can look at that mode would be great. Also as the GP6 is over saturated, might want to try Yi4k+ on an added colour setting also to see how they stack up "artificially"
