Spongebob is a gift that keeps on giving. There is so much to explore in Bikini Bottom and its residents that I had to do another episode. Today we are focusing on the episode "It Came From Goo Lagoon". What is going on beneath the surface of this lagoon under the ocean and why is Sandy so afraid of it? Essentially, when freezing ocean water in places like the Antarctica form plumes of highly concentrated brine into the ocean beneath, it forms a brinicle (hollow brine icicle that expels more brine). When that hits the ocean floor, it spreads rapidly across the floor, instantly freezing the life in it's wake.

MatPat is the Spongebob of the internet ... apparently I watched this four months ago and I don't remember watching this video anywhere later than 2018. also, jellyfish being more numerous in the ocean is due to the ocean's increased *acidity* which does come pollution.

I’m right there with you on that fear of algae. Always feared that it’d crawl up my arm and suffocate me.
I sorta confused Algae for the fungus that was in that one sponge bob episode, so when I saw algae somewhere in the middle of summer in 2014 I tried to find a snail, which I did, and then I threw the snail into the algae. it wasn't;t until I was 10 when I realized how awful of a mistake that was and the guilt made me cry myself to sleep. I may never forgive myself for the time I almost got a snail killed, thankfully I threw the snail with too much effort and it went somewhere else. but every night my brain haunts me with this memory and the anxiety makes me think to myself "I'm a murder,I deserve death for what I did to that snail" I always have to remind myself that snail survived. but the whole multiverse theory where there's a parallel universe where I did in fact get that snail killed haunts me. I may never sleep again.

Hmm... I recall using chalk to draw things on sidewalks like a normal child, but hey, I'd be too generous to say I was normal. Algae is also probably a less hazardous material to use for drawing stuff, but it has its one fatal flaw: It makes my shoes wet when I walk on it.

Not only was I that kid, I did an entire science project on "touching the algae" and won first place at the state fair for it!
Studying whether fertilizer makes algae grow. Little did eleven-year-old-me know, I completed that science project just before the deadly algae blooms in Central Florida, caused by fertilizer runoff.
And no, I wasn't poisoned from touching the algae daily for over a month or coating it in wads of nitrogen fertilizer that turned the water bright teal. I did however lose a shoe in the Indian River Lagoon while collecting samples so if anyone finds a girls' blue Mary Jane croc while dredging please let me know. 😆

Gibbonz You how Matt Pat presented a fan theory about how the show is a metaphor. Means being corporate company, spongebob is the freelance people, and Patrick is the All American people. Well Sandy could have been technological advances or something similar and the dead goo could harm the nuclear power plant. An example would be North Korea adding SAWS to murder jellyfish.
She's from overland, so I assume she's fairly aware of things (considering she knew her geographical location as Texas) so maybe she knows of Korean Jelly Killer bots and knows they may be lurking nearby? Or that global warming is on the rise? It's not the actually jellies that are scary, but what they mean

Do you how much it hurts to be stung by a jellyfish? The stingers on the corpses can still work for a while after the death ( depending on the species of the jellyfish) hence why she thinks they are dangerous.
Dead bodies, while not dangerous on their own, tend to contain a lot of bacteria and parasites that are consuming it. She very easily could have been talking about a less immediate health risk in messing around with decomposing matter. Another thing she might have been worried about is leftover stingers.

Maaaaaan, I remember when I had an algae problem in my fish tank years back.
Had a pretty large fish tank with a few fish, had a light, electric filter, all the good stuff. Had a carnival goldfish which lived for like, eight years.
The family goes on vacation to Orlando for a week, we come back, and the water is green. A thick, opaque green. Couldn’t see anything through it, nor could I see my little buddy :(
Ends up something went wrong, probably in the chemical balance in the water, and the algae bloomed, filling the entire tank of water. So now I’m quite paranoid when I see algae in the tank.

I've had a contentious relationship with Matthew's content over the years, and I approach every theory differently. I haven't watched him in quite some time, but giving this one a chance I was pleasantly surprised.
I think this theory may just be correct. Somebody analyzed an underdiscussed episode and now some of its jokes make more sense. I just don't understand why Sandy thought it was dangerous.

Considering that the purple goo is made of dead jellies, it makes sense that Patrick says they taste like licorice (because of the jellies' jelly)
If they’re jellyfish corpse that would explain why Patrick also said they’re tasty because the characters love the jellyfish jelly and sandy was worried since the stingers night work after death or died from pollution/disease

Not the only one Matpat. It was cool to poke around with a stick at times, but never touched with my hands. Which, come to find out later down the line, that handling algae gave me a really bad rash for a day or two.

We didnt find out why dead jelly fish are dangerous
The same reason why a corpse left to rot in the open is dangerous: it's a health hazard.
1. Jellyfish don't just flop over and die, there are very few ways jellyfish corpses can be just laying around, particularly underwater, which could be cause to panic
2. Sandy could've been mistaken
But I don't know, I'm no theorist
