In July 2024 China transported soldiers 3,000 miles away into Belarus. They conducted joint training exercises only 1.7 miles away from NATO member Poland's border and 40 miles away from the border with Ukraine. Does this mean its time to sound the alarmist alarm? The chinese are coming the chinese are coming!
The reason this has made world news headlines is because of the implication. Beijing hasn’t done a mission like this since 2015. The timing of this drill indicates the CCP is sending a warning message to the United States that they are prepared to deploy troops to fight against NATO in Europe. BUT it begs the question, COULD they actually project power into Europe? How many troops could they deploy and sustain that far away from their borders and how long would it take them to build up combat power?

In 1950, China's GDP was 4% of that of the United States. During the three-year Korean War, the Chinese People's Volunteer Army entered Korea to fight in various units with 1.9 million troops, and nearly 500,000 additional troops, totaling 2.4 million (only the army, 225 tanks). Check how much military force the United States invested in the Korean War. During the three-year Korean War, 1.796 million Americans entered Korea to fight. The United States has deployed a total of 1,153,000 army troops (1,823 tanks), 241,000 air forces (a total of 3,000 combat aircraft, with more than 1,700 aircraft on the battlefield at the same time), 130,000 marines, and 265,000 navy troops (210 warships). These figures do not include the United Nations. During the entire Korean War: 183,108 Chinese sacrificed and 383,218 were injured. US troops: 54,246 died and 103,248 were injured. The UN forces suffered 628,833 deaths and 1,064,453 injuries.

The spelling and pronunciation of Chinese proper names was a deliberate move to confuse the chattering classes, and especially the public, about what was going on in China. By changing the names of the victims of the Failun Gong persecutions, for example, we lose track of individual narratives. Even a Roman Catholic bishop whose name is familiar can be "disappeared" and no one notices; because he now has a "new" unpronounceable name that no one in the US has ever heard before.

Although possible, it stresses the airframe too much and shortens the life of the aircraft too much. Its like eating your seed corn. The NATO that faced the Soviet Union moved vehicles by rail all the time. Loading and unloading the rail cars was mostly handled by Sergeants. When my tank company had to move from Ft. Hood (now Ft. Cavazos) to Ft. Irwin for NTC, we got all the guys with at least one tour in Germany and put them in charge of the Rail movement. There weren't any problems.

Voice from Poland: thank you for this material! Even before seeing it, I can say that the authorities in Belarus seek to establish an agreement with China. Much like us, they desire a powerful ally who is distant enough not to pose a direct threat of conquest, but who also can prevent other nations from subjugating them. The Belarusians aspire to be what Poland was during the communist era-a strong ally of China in Eastern Europe. This positioning allows them to counteract Russia from multiple angles (they are already present in Central Asia and will likely extend to the Caucasus), akin to how the USA uses Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan to contain China. Moreover, it is important to remember that Russian drones have already violated Belarusian airspace twice. Lukashenko is afraid, which is beneficial, as this fear might compel him to loosen his ties with Russia by leveraging his relationship with China.
Admittedly, the scale of these operations is incomparable, as US naval ships can comfortably traverse the Pacific to reach Taiwan, for instance. To challenge Russia via Belarus, Polish or Lithuanian assistance would be necessary to deliver any aid. Thus, Poland shares a common interest with China, as both nations benefit from preventing Belarus from becoming a part of Russia.
For us, this alignment has profound implications. If an independent Poland is significant not only to the USA and Europe but also to China, this considerably strengthens our strategic position. This is why President Duda of Poland received a more ceremonious welcome in China than Putin.

One is that it's China / Russia and Belarus all working together to show a signal against the west. The other way to interpret this is that it's Belarus and China acting against Russia. The evidence for both theories are interesting to look into. That's one of the things I like about foreign affairs is that no one knows for certain what is in the heads of these world leaders. I wanted to get more into the relationship between Belarus and China but I had to focus on the strategic transport aspect. The foreign affairs relationship there is facinating.

There are some options you missed out. Russia sending their transport planes to China while chinese planes heading to Russia. So not just the heavy transports question is solved with the An-124 but it doesn't really change the capacity of the airfields. Serving out each others planes while they stay. Lets say 40 chinese transports and 40 russians taking off nearly the same time from several airfields means there is space for the arriving planes on these bases. The russian planes can move the necessary equipments and personnel on their first trip to chinese airfields and bringing troops and vehicles on their way back. A number of chinese planes doing the same and others moving troops and their equipment. Carrying the tanks on planes to an airfield near a major train line closer to the destination and loading them to trains is also an option. So range is not really a problem this way. With proper timing and coordination it could double the amount of stuff they can move and provides the option to transport more tanks than you did expect.

Humanity doesn't have a future. We never did. If you think we have a future, it is only because you aren't looking for enough into the future. Every living thing on this planet has died, or is in the process of dying. You are standing, RIGHT NOW, on the dirt and dust created by, and from, the dead that came before you. Every human being that came before us has died, all the estimated 117 billion of them. 100% fatality rate. And, this planet's atmosphere naturally crushes everything, then the weather grinds the surface to dust and washes it into the sea, where it is compacted, then eventually gets subducted into the mantle for melting, and recycling. That is humanity's future. Again, that is to say, we don't have a future.
Humanity is nothing more than a little bit of slag on this planet's surface. At best, we are a fungal infection on this planet's surface. We are what floats on top, nothing more, nothing less.
There are exactly two things that we can work toward to change this though, and neither of those two things are within our reach at this time. The first thing we MUST do to escape the fate that is coming at us is, we need to conquer our senescence. That is to say, we need to stop the aging process dead in its tracks. Put more clearly, we have to achieve natural immortality. We must live forever, outside of destruction of course. And the second thing we MUST do to escape our eventual end is, we must get the fuck off this planet. This planet has killed EVERYTHING on it, multiple times; if we don't get off this rock, we will get destroyed like everything else. We must live forever, because space is really big, and we won't live long enough to survive it if TIME is still our number one enemy.
Time and space are inseparable. We must defeat BOTH of them. Failure to do both results in only extinction.
This makes everything you've ever done in your entire life, completely pointless. If you aren't working on making our species live forever, or working on a way to get us off this planet, your life is wasted; you're nothing. I see a whole lot of nothings on this planet. Just saying.
And as to learning from the past... There is only one lesson to teach here. THEY ALL DIED IN THE PAST. ALL OF THEM. EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM. NONE OF THEM ESCAPED. So if you learn anything from history, learn this, you are every bit as fucked as they were. Your current situation is no different, still. Also, the humans of the past, are identical to the humans today, identical in EVERY way. Humanity has not evolved at all, in hundreds of thousands of years. That isn't going to change.
And I am going to rub some salt in the wound here, just to make it sting even more.
Hope? Hope is a lie, it is an illusion. Hope is the thing you turn to when you have lost everything. Hope is what you turn to when all else has been done. Hope is asking for help. It is the non-religious form of prayer. You can't do anything, so you turn to hope.
Here, let's run an experiment. let's try to solve our own problems with hope. "I hope you..." No, that is asking someone else for help. Uhm, "I hope we..." No, that is till asking for help from someone else. "I hope they..." Again, others. Well, as you can see, you cannot hope without putting the responsibility onto someone or something else. But wait, there still "I hope I..." right? Surely that works, right? But no. If you could put your socks on in the morning, you don't have to hope to put your socks on, you would just put your socks on. No. When you say "I hope I..." you say it because you aren't sure of what you are doing, you don't know. So in the case of "I hope I..." you are putting it in the hands of luck. "I hope I did this right." You don't know if you did or not.
So you can also forget hope, there is no hope. Nobody is coming to save us. Currently, our species is entirely helpless. We are weak, we are fragile, and we are a function of system that is eventually, and inevitably going to consume us the same as it has consumed everything else. There is no help coming.
If you want to live, drop whatever it is you are doing that does not benefit cancer research and space exploration, and turn your undivided attention to that, and ONLY that. Otherwise, you're already dead.

Take this video with a grain of salt as its clearly not well thought out... China has the second largest cargo and passenger airfleet in the world only second to the US. They would use that to deploy overseas, just as we do. The majority of the troops in OIF got there on commercial flights. I went on a chartered United 747 from Colorado Springs to Germany to Kuwait in 2003 and returned that way in 2004. You only use the military aircraft if you are going into an active area of war. They would simply deploy before the war starts or father back from the front lines.

Russia has an extensive rail network, with terminals at key points throughout central asia and along the chinese border. The tanks/trucks would be loaded onto trains and sent to western Russia, whilst the troops would travel via plane to assembly bases in western russia and belarus.

I mean let's be real here for a second guys. China can barely project power in its own region. Let alone a worldwide deployment. And I'm sorry if Belarus found itself in a shooting war with Europe. The fight would already be over before China got off its ass to do anything. Simply put, after traversing 12,000 K.M and let's be real Europe is a lot closer to Belarus China.

Kudos on a well thought out show. You covered just about everything. I served in the USAF during the cold War, in a job where I was required to know the status of every aircraft and all of the support supplies. From fuel to parts to bombs, bullets and beans. Any military action is a complex and dangerous ballet. Something I doubt that the Chinese have sufficient experience to facilitate.
Now. An exception. A deal with Russia that essentially uses Chinese Troops in the current war. Giving the Chinese badly needed experience under fire and giving Russia more cannon fodder. I don't believe that this possibility can be discounted.
Again Kudos on a job well done

It’s the logistics picture that really shows how serious and threatening the other side really is to opponents and the necessity to have intelligence assets monitoring the flows of material. Even better is to have a spy in their military accounting department.

Only thing I can think of is that you didn't cover a combined logistic option. Instead of 2 brigades by just one of the 3 possibilities, what if it was broken down into combining all three together? Also, if the sea route was shortened by off-loading in Pakistan or Iran, is that possible and, if so, would time and effort be saved?

    • @thmphll

Why would you offload? Just refuel in Iran or somewhere in Russia... You don't move thousands of troops via military aircraft, you do it by commercial passenger jets. These military aircraft would only move what commercial passenger/cargo jets can't.

From what you talked about, Railhead Ops ARE being trained. Short distance means more training. China is large enough that these operations *could* be being conducted with greater frequency.
Larger movements into Russia would be building rapport and familiarity.
The latest (public) mission into Belarus, sounds like a flex. Or "show of force". Of which you spoke of.
