For everyone in the comments complaining about the price, I own the non-medic brass 1918 trench and I feel it is worth every penny, it's gorgeous to look at and wears well too. Remember, you're getting an enamel dial and a brave, unique design among microbrands.

They just want more divers; divers that are just like the other divers they already have and that look like the other divers they want to buy.

I really like the Medic .
I would like to give one to my doctor. I've been with him quite sometime and he's helped me through difficult times .

I just ordered one. I’m a veterinarian and I often do equine emergency medicine and I’m buying this specifically for work in the field. It does help I’m a big WWI history nerd.
And yes the rod of Asclepius is more proper for both medicine and vet medicine but the caduceus miss used so damn often at this point all is doctors are used to it.

I think the vario logo fits nicely here. i'd likely buy either this or the trench if the lume was appropriate. if they were to use 'old radium' lume with extreme application, i'd be quite excited.

Great review as always Shane. I have been a Paramedic for 30+ years and am very interested in this Vario. While it’s a bit small for my 8.5 inch wrist, it’s uniqueness and tie in to my career makes it very enticing for me and I am strongly considering adding it to my collection. Thanks for the first look!

I got the Vario 1918 Trench 40mm on a white enamel dial. It is gorgeous. It is about 10.5 mm thick with all and its domed crystal! I think I am now thinking on purchasing the Medic in brass 40mm diameter ... yours looks fantastic, Shane!

If only this watch would have been on the market a couple of years ago, I would have given it to my doctor. He retired in 2017 at the age of 73. He has saved my life once, when I was nearly choking from a lung infection. I hope he still is doing well, since he moved to another place and I have never seen him again.

I'm very impressed with Vario. Their attention to detail is excellent. Each watch is personally checked before despatch including regulating the movement, hence the accuracy. I have the brass 40mm Trench watch with the white dial and black and red numerals. Magnificent

Most enjoyable review as always my friend, tremendous camera work....It looks great, very unique, you see that case you know it's a Vario, I only have issue with the bund strap size, they should consider looking at fixing that....although we all love crazy lume I think in this instance though it's acceptable....the price is okay but I'm notoriously tight and think they're pushing it bit in this instance.....🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⌚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⌚

    Nice review!
Just bumped into this vid while searching for Vortec pocket watch conversions. You might have a peek at their site as well. Not sure if the price is matching the value but the machining is not cheap for one offs.
Please keep in mind, copper alloys are toxic (had to look it up becuase I have interest in brass watches!) and the patina could leave a green color on your skin, getting into the body. Highly toxic for fish and shrimp in aquarium settings...I read this may cause Alzheimer disease as well thus not a medical choice. This I browsed on copper and brass jewelry toxicity. The same might be with rose gold (plated) items as well.
The good news is the back plate needs to be of stainless or titanium or it will be oxidated together never to be serviced. The downside is lugs always tend to tough the skin.
The only candidate which might be safe is a San Martin brass Arnie hommage I found to date...
    greets!

I have the 40mm brass Trench with the white dial. Out of all my watches it's by far the watch with the best backstory. It will never leave my collection. Well worth the 6 month wait and my money... The bund strap is great except the length. I just love it.

Gj on Vario for not having a ghost date (unlike silly brands like boldr)
Ps: i asked boldr if they can put a date dial for me... they said they cant wich pretty much tells you they are made and assebled in China and they have no control over their own product...

Interesting and considered review as always 👍 . I think they really should have made these hand winding, much more like a first ,(or even second) world war watch and the case could be substantially slimmer.

  • @remotecon1980

Thanks for another great review. The medic is an interesting choice, but I'm glad I went with the black and white trench in 37mm stainless. I was a bit surprised (maybe even disappointed?) you didn't comment much on the practicalities of brass. I know bronze is a fairly common metal at this point and the brass will patina as well, but brass is quite a bit softer I think and might corrode with sweat much like some cheap chrome plated watches...? I know you've only had it for a month, but any thoughts on its durability?

I had an original trench watch heirloom from my great grandfather who fought in the trenches at Gallipoli, Turkey. Have to say I've never seen so much respect and admiration for the fallen opposing forces in any country that Turkey does for the defeated ANZACS. It's as if they are honouring their own soldiers. Very moving. Anyway this watch is very nice and almost looks the part however the crown at 4 ruins it. They could have gotten away with at 3 as some had it there later, but the true authentic original had it at 12 like a pocketwatch, as they were mostly adapted pocketwatches and the wide lug bars were there to accommodate the crown at that position. I understand modern needs should be taken into account but authentic, it's definitely not. Anyway, I gave mine to a local military museum, as I thought it served a better purpose there.

  • @cbody70

I enjoyed your review. Any time you see flaws like that on the dial it brings the quality control on the whole watch into question. Also pricing north of $300 with a basic movement makes this one a pass for me.

This like the other trench from Vario are pretty cool. I do think it was a bit of a mistake to do true fix wire lugs. I would have preferred a faux wire lugs with actual spring bars so u maximize strap compatibility.. especially since these watches are a bit of strap monsters, I would feel a bit gyped not being able to use many of my favorite 2 piece straps for these watches.
Otherwise a valiant effort and product.

I've been wearing my 1918 (Not medic) again the last couple of weeks, and it's gorgeous.
I love the handset, the clarity, the style and the uniqueness.
The leather straps are amazingly soft.
Only complaints would be crown is a little fiddly to screw back in (And it'd be even worse if you had the bundt strap on) and I found the strap was a little short to actually use with the bundt. I think the look without the bundt is great and a huge leather pad on my wrist was not actually something I needed in Australia anyway though!

Vintage look without the vintage watch problem. Even the flaws at 5 & 8 markers are less unforgiving, afterall, it is vintage-looking watch. Brass casing not PVD coating casing makes it even more convincing.

This watch is gorgeous! And the price is not that high too, if only my country didn't demand such a high tax on foreign goods. One niggle, though: I understand it is closer to a recreation of the original, so brass case is longical from that point of view. But I had the impression that the main reason brass in watch industry was abandoned in favor of SS is that it lacked durability and scratch resistance? So is it really a good choice here?

  • @Bob_Smith19

WIS are a weird bunch, both unnecessarily critical of minutia and selectively, massively, forgiving. If this were a $50 TImex there would be screeching about how plated brass cases suck, etc. If it were titanium there's be ree'ing about how titanium is "soft" and "scratches easily" (both lies.) But since it's $350 and all hyper-allergenic brass that will corrode and rust before your eyes while scratching like a piece of butter it's a-ok. Doesn't quite make sense.
Very cool watch. There's a bit of a resurgence in these trench style field watches. Lum-Tec has had a model for a few years , recent JDM Timex on the bund, the Drop watch and now the Vario. I like the aesthetics but wish any of these had a date because that'd make them practical, modern day tools for me.

A Chrono would make more sense, as here you have to wait until the top of the min to use.
However realistically both are gimmicky these days. Most physicians learn to do it in their head. Or just use a device that gives you the read instantly.

    • @samuele.marcora
      @samuele.marcora 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@RelativeTime with no chrono and no pulsometer scale one justs counts how many pulses in 15 or 30 secs and multiplies by 4 or 2. Easy. But I like my scales and complications, no matter how unnecessary, to work properly. This is just for looks.

Constant spamming? Sorry you feel that way. Believe me I get annoyed with spam myself, so I wouldn't purposely force that on anyone else.
If you got an email it's possible your settings for TH-cam. There is no way for me to tell it to send you anything. The only thing I did different was set this to a premiere as Dave and I are doing a dual one and will be chatting with everyone during.

@@RelativeTime Thanks for your answer, really appreciate it.
But that is not my problem. I see a video in my subsriptions - ah, a new video from Relative Time - about Vario (have myself a 1918 from them) - the better.
Oh - this is not a video, this is a reminder that there will eventually be a video.
I'm really sick of having to check my subcription feed if that is an actual video or just some reminder. Ok, my personal problem, but I really, really don't like this trend. Therefore I unsubscribe from channels that use this kind of announcements.

@@Norbert_Neunzling Well I hate to see you go over this. Especially as the point of the premier is to get closer to viewers by setting a time we can all chat while watching the video. The only time I've used it is when Dave also has the same watch, that way we can have our videos released back to back at the same time.
But I guess it is what it is here. Cheers!
