As someone who has a pretty big phobia of RTS games, this one has really caught my eye, and I'm definitely going to try the demo. I really hope the background music is from the game, because it sounds AMAZING.
Damn. I just found your channel and started bunging. Your videos remind me why I love JRPGs but never have the time to finish any lol. I think you should cover composers, writers, game developers, series/game art, OSTs and, the anime intros and cutscenes as aeparate stuff.
The game looks great but that soundtrack was freaking WOW. Just listening to this episode on headphones did it justice. The soundtrack alone makes this game worth it. I wonder who did this soundtrack
This game is really shaping up to be the thing that I didn't know that I needed. I really enjoyed both Ogre Battle and the gambit system in FF XII and thought it was a shame that both of those things had been mostly overlooked over the years. Can't wait to give this one a try next week.
Ahh I can’t believe y’all did a vid on this. I’ve only watched a couple trailers cause I wanna go into this game as blind as possible so unfortunately I won’t be able to watch this vid just yet 😂 but man I am so hyped for this one😬
ayo first time i see a video of yours and i was looking for stuff about this game, first, you show and explain it in an amaizing way, keeps me listening without getting bored. Good job. Secondly, i instantly subbed at that intro, god tier ! thanks for that !
I've always wanted a game to expand on the Ogre Battle 64 formula and when I saw this game announcement I lost my fucking mind. I sure hope this comes to PC/Steam one day.
Ogre Battle 64, my love, you have returned. Man the memories of my favorite rpg came flooding in during the demo, I was so happy. I won't deny that I'm a huge fan of Vanillaware's artistic style so that's a match made in heaven. Everyone enjoy!
Woot woot!! Congrats on the atlus sponsor! Hehe. Im very much a Vanillaware stand, so i will get this for sure aha. Thanks! Im hoping someone will decide to release princess crown and grand knights history in the west.
Thank you! I think Vanillaware absolutely outdid themselves here. And yeah hopefully if this game ends up selling well enough they’ll be encouraged to bring over some of their earlier titles
Thanks! Maybe a little too early to fully tell but so far at least due to the type of gameplay it has this one has actually been my favorite Vanillaware title to date
If you haven’t, I definitely recommend checking out 13 Sentinels! They also released remasters/almost-remakes of two of their older games in the forms of Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir and GrimGrimoire Once More!
Vanillaware is just goated. Odin's Sphere is one of the best games I've experienced Also, nice getting that sponsor! Holy shit an FFXII gambit-like system I'm sold. Enough said😂
I like the reference to ogre battle. But what comes to mind for me is Dragon Force. Played that a TON on the Sega Saturn as a kid. I might be picking this up day one
I wasn't even going to pick this up because I figured it would fall short of ogre battle, and then I ended up playing through the demo twice, preordered it today, and can't wait to spend all weekend playing it. One thing I discovered by accident was units can still fight with 0 stamina, they can't move but they can be rotated in if they're close enough.
I know you said that the story wasn't gripping you but I'd definitely be patient with it. I feel like by now my experience with Vanillaware (Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown) has taught me that their plotlines are always slow burns that tend to ramp up with plotthreads the further you delve into the game. I have a feeling Unicorn Overlord is about to overtake Odin Sphere ad my favorite Vanillaware game. I'm really excited about it and have already ordered my Collector's Edition.
The look of the game is Octopath Traveler. It is a tactics game like Ogre Tactics. All I was saying. The battle map looks like Octo.@@Fleshlight_Reviewer
@@grimreaper5864the games this is based on worked the same way. You were the army general and moved your pieces around and watched them steamroll Maybe you're too young to know that, or have played those games?
Yeah sorry about that, we addressed this in the description. There was an error upon exporting and I guess it cut out that audio for some reason, pretty annoying. We realized it too late after it had already been up for awhile
Too bad it's not released on PC, I really hope Atlus understands that Vanillaware (the studio that did the game) deserves more recognition, a remake release of all of their games on pc would be great.
I’m hoping to play this at some point this year.. My only concern is it’s gonna feel radically different than anything I’m used to so I’ll just put it as aside like I did Diofield Chronicle.. A game I really took a liking to but hadn’t quite set aside the time to truly learn at least not yet
Only thing I worry about is it might be too easy like Disgaea. I played it on hardest and because of level of customization, you can definitely blow through the battles by making specific counter units to the bosses.
I’ve played a pretty good amount over the years. It really doesn’t have much in common with those titles actually as those are more tactical grid based RPGs whereas Unicorn Overlord is a real time strategy RPG. It’s not a gameplay style for everyone, but it’s one I personally really love and wish we got more of in the genre
I really enjoyed what I played of the demo, and because Vanillaware had already won me over, I was already invested in what they had cooking. I will say though, that the English version's dialogue is distractingly verbose. It's generally still comprehensible, but compared to the Japanese dialogue, there are entire metaphors and statements added seemingly just to fill up the word count. We'll see how it goes in the full release.
Well games like Triangle Strategy and Final Fantasy Tactics are tactical RPGs whereas Unicorn Overlord is a real time strategy RPG so they play very differently. When I made the comment near the beginning of the video about how this game is exactly what strategy RPGs have been missing for years, I wasn’t referring to tactical RPGs like FFT. To my knowledge we really haven’t gotten a game with this exact style of gameplay since Ogre Battle 64 over 20 years ago, it’s a very rare and unique style of RPG we don’t see often To answer your question though, from what I’ve played yeah I definitely prefer this one quite a bit more over Triangle Strategy. FFT is an all time classic for a reason and it’s too early to tell for me, it’ll be really hard to top that story, but considering I do actually prefer Ogre Battle 64 over it as an overall game it wouldn’t be that crazy for me to end up liking Unicorn Overlord more as well. We’ll see though!
I'm sure normal mode will be just fine for anyone, I'm playing on expert and it's fine. Every new class has a little tutorial battle in the overworld to help you understand how they work, these games always have glossaries to go into and read as well if you ever miss something, including lore/journal of the story you've done so far. These types of games are usually based on rock paper scissors design. Like sword beats bow, bow beats magic, magic beats swords. the demo is free.
It’s not that bad, the game does a pretty good job at easing you into explaining the mechanics over the initial hours that it never really overwhelms you with too much info at any one time
3:09 That's so sick. You can tie your laces and enemy wll ignore you hahaha On a serious note. I think im done with jrpgs that has too much conversations in between. After playing SMTV, i think core gameplay is much much more important to me. Im burnt out from Vesperia's long ass dialogues and very little battles. How's unicorn though? Ive always loved how Vanillaware makes cutscenes before
I don’t like the name But after reading a basic breakdown of what the gameplay is like it appealed to me quite quickly Now I just have to find time to play it :/
Yeah I gotta admit it’s taken me a bit to come around to the name and even then I’m still not super crazy about it. But fortunately that doesn’t take anything away from the actual game as it’s a super fun time
I really wanted to like this game but after 10+ hours in they are still introducing new classes and it just feels too much. The story also didn't hook me, most characters are exaggerated good or evil and a lot of the evil ones are "just being mind controlled and therefore you can enlist them" Still a great looking game but I guess it's not for me.
So many modern JRPGS seem to have this awesome gameplay, but then the story/writing is just rubbish. JRPGS are probably my favourite genre, but i just can't play one unless it has both :(
I don’t think the writing is bad in this one from what I’ve seen, it’s just kinda generic so far but to be fair it is still the very beginning. Vanillaware’s last game before this is supposed to have a very strong story so I wouldn’t be surprised if the story gets a lot better later
FF 12 DNA ? Im in 😂. Im around Gold Saucer in FF7 right now and I cant go on anymore the game was so boring and too many mini game. I need game that respect my time and this look like one.
The graphics are so ugly and the title sounds so stupid that I can't even bring myself to playing this game. RPGs are dead, outside of Dragon Quest and Dragon's Dogma.

Dude seriously this is becoming one of my favorite gaming channels on here if NOT my favorite. Much love!
They REALLY need to bring this to Steam.
Vanillaware has never done a PC port, as far as I'm aware. So it's either console or Jack Sparrow.
Sadly i dont see it happening. It was amazing that it got an xbox port. They don't touch pc.
It's sad because Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown(my least liked) and Muramasa were sick sidescrollers!!
Well technically if it's in Switch, it has a "PC" version too.
If you know what I mean.
Why not just get a console version? so much better to play this on TV or Switch than on a PC screen.
