- Welcome to Sawed Off Hallowads, a spinoff of a Dean of Doom spinoff where we give grades to classic and contemporary Halloween-themed Doom wads. Why? Because enough people share this very specific interest. Thanks to Gary, we're down to three working terminals, but that should be enough to salvage the special. Let's see what we've got!

Extremely amused that we got a halloween episode including a house larger than it seemed and a nightmare maze with confusing geometary and neither was the map I was expecting. Great maps.
I don't think anyone in the Doom community still needs to be told to play myhouse.wad at this point lol.
Oh neat, I thought you might be planning to do What Lies Beneath because you reacted to the post. I wanted the project to be released on Halloween, but it was overly ambitious so it took us many more months to finish.
I assume the dunce cap was going to MAP03, which we did have a technical problems with during development. Weird texturing is entirely my fault - Pegleg had problems with his editor so I picked up to texture all the walls.
I'm glad you found a Sicko, I'm really attached to him for some reason.
As the “ursine mapper of death” in question, I love the video. I remember playing Fallen Leaves and having a good time. I will say that originally I was slotted for MAP02 of What Lies Beneath, but unfortunately, was unable to fulfill my slot. LordEntr0py jumping in and making such a wonderful map was not only a joy to see, but to play! I’m very proud of what the team accomplished here. Glad you got around to play it!

Maskim Xul is insanely cool - I remember seeing it praised regularly a few years ago and holy crap, it's so obvious why, now that I've seen it in action. Superb work..!

Those autumn trees in Fallen Leaves look so beautiful. I hope we have some more doom wads with fancy colorful trees. Thank god now we have MBF21 to make this happen, along with adding more creative gameplay elements with improved, powerful dehacked. Imagine what if Maskim Xul had DSDHacked. While Doom is eternal, the creativity of doom community people is infinite.
The script was especially poetic today, and its slower delivery does not go unappreciated :)

A2Rob's Machete has given me a fantastic couple of evenings since the review came out. I am absolutely one of those "rocket launcher nuts" that you mentioned, and I'll definitely be downloading Fallen Leaves and What Lies Beneath soon. tons of awesome looking stuff in this episode!

I had to sign off your patreon after nearly a year because things are tight here, but I'm glad you're doing so well and happy I could still make it into the credits for the Halloween special. Amazing channel!
Whoever made the Midi of "premonition of love?" at the beginning from Mega Man Legends is my hero. That OST is very underrated and a fav of mine.
right after reaching 28 minutes, i told myself i'll give maskim xul a try before i get spoiled, last night at 2 am, put the brightness a little lower and all i can say is that it truly felt surreal, so many small details that could have been easily missed, absolutely made me think "yup, he did this to fuck with my brain", i seriously got jump scared a couple of times, the roaming enemies speaking in sumerian ( i assume, either way, it sounds very similar to arabic, which is the first time i encounter it in a doom wad, since i understand arabic and have heard that language for my entire life, it truly drops a chilling athmosphere for me) i spent more than 30 minutes walking instead of running cause i did not want to trigger anything without having weapons, but after map 2, Uggae keeps the creepy vibes but this time you feel a lot more ready!
the down side is the fact that it does get tidious to remember everything you need to remember, the massive amounts of archviles in the library doesn't help either, also noted that the map is almost reluctant to give you ammo, but imo that's exactly what makes it so great, it's survival, not run and gun (mostly).
also if you want to know what those words mean you're gonna need to check out the revised version of the necronomicon.
PS: in some arabic dialects (around north africa) we still use the word BARRA! which has two meaning, outside, and if said aggressively it means leave or begone, similar to sumerian, crazy right ?
all this to say that i really would like to thank you mr Mtpain27 for showing me a wad so great, absolutely loved it, and if mr Obsidian ever reads this, i truly hope you have an extra project you're working on xD
Maskim Xul was an incredible WAD. I was not ready for how punishing it would be ammo-wise so I did need to do a fair amount of savescumming, but even still it took me nearly 5 hours to trek through and god it was so worth it. The rotational sequences were incredible, the archvile library was a blast (literally), and being able to go ham with the Grimoire due to invuln spheres from the roulette felt wonderful. So many great moments in that WAD, thanks for the recommendation!
One of my songs (or more specifically my collab with DCG Retrowave, "The Berggren-Malde Complex") is in What Lies Beneath MAP03! Appearing in a Dean of Doom video has been a bit of a dream of mine for a while, so it's nice to see it finally happen.
Now i just want to watch ETERNAL DOOM and Hell Bound now, my most favorite classic doom wads
I don't play much doom but this time I decided to heed the spoiler warining for Maskim Xul and go try it for myself, and I'm quite glad I did! The survival horror metroidvania style adventure that map 2 was made 3 hours feel like five minutes, and map 3 would've followed it up just fine if it wasn't for that god forsaken archvile library. I spent god knows how long just trying to run in, press the three switches and get out, all without even knowing what the switches did; eventually I just used god mode for the sake of my sanity. Felt like a cruel joke that the boss after that was just "get two invuln spheres and win."

Finally a WAD I've actually played! What Lies Beneath renewed my love for Doom after realising I was not very good at the game lol. It was a wonderful experience that kept me wanting to push on. I found Blacksite incredible difficult compared to the rest of the WAD, and Astral Sanctuary felt a little too long for my liking (not to mention frustrating due to a few bugs - though that's on me for playing a Release Candidate version). Would highly recommend the WAD!

I just finished Maskim Xul and oh man what an experience. It's true that it's absorbing, it's actually the first time I spend more than 2 hours on a single map solely because of being actually interested rather than just wanting to finish a level; I actually didn't want it to end. I scrambled around the main map for long trying to uncover all its secrets, which is something i don't usually do. The atmosphere is unlike anything I imagined I would experience in Doom. I heard about this wad back when you posted this video, but I didn't watch any of it because of how ominously you presented it, like, I actually remember pausing the video when you said "you offer yourself to it" and thinking "I HAVE to play this at some point". And, I finally got around to playing it, and now I'm really at a loss for words, Maskim Xul is definitely one of the best wads I've played. Thank you for the recommendation and the review.
After watching the last WAD set, I'm surprised no one ever created a *Hellraiser* DOOM wad using the library maze as a Leviathan level (change the bookshelf colors from brown to greyish blue).
Ahh Maskim Xul (I knew it!), that was a fun one to write for, can't believe it's been six years - the WAD is still so vivid in my memory but I don't think I've done a full playthrough since it came out. I'm so glad you stuck to ZDoom to play that so the music could be heard as intended, so much is lost in the MIDI version that plays in PrBoom/DSDA :(
Bonus trivia: When I was accepted into university on a music composition course, the Maskim Xul track was the first thing I'd put on my portfolio when applying!
EDIT: Meant to say too (I watched this yesterday and forgot to comment D: ), I might have to check out What Lies Beneath for myself after seeing this episode, so much cool technical shit, I love things like that!

Maskim Xul is the only wad of the bunch I knew beforehand, and since I love Lovecraftian stuff, it blew my mind.

I have heeded your warning and skipped the spoilerrific part of What Lies Beneath, because I'm 💯% playing that blind. The others I have less interest in, so for now your review coverage of them is enough candy corn for my treat bag.
*P.S.:* Since you've covered Snax's Stickney Installation, I was somewhat expecting to see Abscission this Halloween. It's certainly got the harrowing feeling to match the season... although with its pure use of vanilla Doom textures, it's much less festive than the wads of this special and the previous ones. Plus it's a full-fledged 32-map megawad, so it wouldn't leave room for other trick-or-treaters.
Very nice episode ! When I saw the fleshy eye in the wall, I thought you"ll review "The Eye" from mouldy, knowing it's one of your favourite mappers.
Glad to hear you got out Professor, but I hope the delinquent is fine :(. Great video as always, Maskim Xul has been on my backlog for a while but I hadn't considered Fallen Leaves or What Leaves Beneath so adding those to the list too. OITL is wonderful, both on its own and as a preamble of sorts to the Wormwood series, although I'm surprised you didn't do Wormwood4 heh.
Wormwood 4 was planned originally but I enjoyed What Lies Beneath more. And don’t worry, I’m not going to be rid of the Delinquent so easily.

Nice to see Fallen Leaves get some love, it's a beautiful little WAD that has some spicy combat and killer visuals.

Huh... Wasn't expecting a not-so-existentially terrifying yet still pretty spooky wad for your last-minute surprise wad, but I guess that'd be too predictable. Fun vid as always!
Some really good picks for this this year! I haven't played Orange or Maskim Xul, but those looked pretty cool, especially the latter. Fallen Leaves may have been the first one of Bri's sets I've played (I can't remember if it was that or Hydrosphere), and it was definitely harder than I thought it would be. Nothing too insane thankfully, but a nice challenge. And that color palate is fantastic! Nice and rustic. Went back to his older stuff too, and they're also great WADs. What Lies Beneath is one of my favs from this year. Beetle and co really outdid themselves with this one. I think my favorite map is map 2 just because of the curved architecture looking amazing, but both of the A+s deserve them as well, especially DFF's imo. The only issue I had with it was playing in GZDoom had some of the MBF things not working properly. The lava falls didn't work, and some barriers still allowed me to pass through them. I know in the Doomworld thread we looked into it a bit, and eventually found that GZDoom doesn't have the MBF features turned on by default. Once that was spotted, I turned that setting on, and the lava fall started working as intended! (Thankfully that map is still beatable on continuous at least). I do agree Shawny's final map is a little too long, but it really felt like he was able to expand his design chops quite a bit on that one and has some fantastic fights to it, so I wouldn't really change it (plus the easter egg homages to Hellivator and Skulltiverse were a nice touch). I think the combined Beetle and Pineapple crews put out the projects I'm the most excited for, as they are some of the most inventive and fun WADs out there!
I think at this point you need a new area for Sawed Off Wads, first an Archvile infestation and now Gary the eldritch horror now taking over the place. I hope you feed Gary very well!
Maskim Xul was a real pain in the butt for me to speedrun it. I didn't expect the review to be so comprehensive, although you missed one thing. A couple of bookshelf textures on Map 2 partially hide those scary eyes you see at the end, meaning you've been watched from the beginning of your journey around this mystical world

I just recently started playing custom Doom wads and honestly the Halloween specials are what got me into playing them. Very good video and I already downloaded all of the wads to try later.
I would love to see an episode on Judgment. Very fun wad with a lot of thought put into the fights.
hey great episode, I think the comedic bits were on point and the review of every map was awesome. I had heard about Maksim Xul for a while, but outside of maybe like a couple screenshots or very short video clips of random sections of the library part, I never really knew anything about the wad, I even thought it was a gzdoom mod. Your review of the map makes me respect the hell out of it, and inspires me to create something as amazing one day, I'm sure it's one of those maps that sticks in your head for a while after playing it and you won't forget how it made you feel for a long time. Your show is an awesome treat, especially after sleeping most of the day, going to work, and coming back home with nothing to do but just sit and eat some food. Happy Halloween Mt. Pain

I stepped away from this video to pay Maskim Xul, I ultimately didn't get to the end (I got to the third map and general exhaustion after a long day meant I just wasn't ready), I found it an incredibly inspiring experience. I have never played a Doom level feelling like the map itself was haunting me, but the endless chatter, the stream of steady, dangerous ambushes, the greatly powered dowm roster (Even getting the super weapon, I struggle to manage it's immense power.) meant that I never really felt powerful. I was constantly having to outmove the various foes so that even when I got most of (excluding the meteror spell.) weapons, there was still massive tension. Fantastic experience.
I'll try what lies benenth another time, but thanks for hte incredible videos as always!
It's fun to note that the Jackbombs are extremely inconsistent in DSDA Doom, sometimes they just, despawn.
Think I had this issue as well in ZDoom back then.

Amazing video again, MtPain! You've showcased some really cool WADs this time around. Maskim Xul in particular is just one of those experiences that is only possible using video games as a medium. The other WADs are also very cool to see, and I can't wait to see you talk about the rest of the WADs in season 3, especially Nova 3 featuring antares031's masterpiece.
By the way, MtPain, I'm not sure if you've answered this question before but are you considering a review of the Raven games? Heretic in particular is suited for the method of grading you use in these videos.

@@MtPain27 alright, that's quite hopeful haha. See if you enjoy it for yourself first :). Heretic can be a bit more repetitive than Doom and the enemies are a bit more bullet-spongey. But the atmosphere of Heretic is amazing and Heretic has a small but passionate modding scene, with the Wayfarer being some of the best content I have ever played.
Also, if I can recommend some WADs for Sawn-off WADs, I'd like to mention 32 Inch Nails and VooDoo Guns, both beautiful experimental levelsets by Alexander Eternal S.
My family never really celebrated Halloween all that much so this series has genuinely given me something to look forward to come the 31st. Thank you for all you do Dean!
Maskim Xul is an experience i feel everyone should try at least once. It's a trip, and is best done in a single sitting.

I was looking for a fun spooky or autumn WAD to play today and Fallen Leaves really hit the spot~ Perfect theming for this time of year and particularly fitting with the color palette choices and ending since we just got like half an inch of snow and temperatures dropped to 24F so some ice just began to form....
The snow and ice will be gone by tomorrow but it was all too fitting playing through Fallen Leaves today. When I started playing it was mildly clouding and still sunny out. A few maps in It got overcast as the sun began to drop to the horizon. It started snowing where I live when I was halfway through MAP05. Looking through the window at the intermission screen of MAP05 to MAP06 to see snow gathering on the ground was so surreal! By the time I got to MAP07 it was getting dark out!
Thanks for sharing these wads. Every time you make one of these videos it always surprises me how much larger the community and content pool really is. These themed videos are also great! If I may; I suggest trying to do one in January, April, and July. A season themed wad video if you will! Though I imagine it's probably too much work, It might be worth considering.

Can't say much about the first 3 wads but they sure look interesting! Especially the 3rd one is a wad I'd love to try out some time, if there weren't so many other wads and games I have to get through.
But Maskim Xul is one of the few I have played and boy, it somehow stuck with me ever since I played it the first time. When I went in completely blind, it actually took me like 8 hours just to get through map 02. Yeah I was taking my time, and also spent a lot of it looking for secrets but I was only able to find half of them. Map 02 is a masterpiece, it makes you completely forget about the map 01 introduction. Map 03 is... not that great but I still enjoy it. Just like you, I find the boss fight impossible without getting at least 1 invulnerability. There's just nothing you can do vs. all those Archviles and random red wizard fireballs flying all over the place, with nearly zero cover. The ending actually creeped me out the first time.
But despite the somewhat crappy final boss, I still find myself wanting to play this wad every now and then. I've played through it 3 times now, and each time I completely forgot that map 01 even exists, it's kinda fascinating. I even thought about speedrunning it, but then I remember map 03 existing.
By the way, if you warp to map 30, you'll find a little secret... (Spoiler: It's basically just a duplicate of map 04 with all the eyeballs. There used to be a 🤔 sprite in this map but I think it got removed in one of the newer versions?)

I haven't even watched this one yet but Dean I just want you to know I'm playing Tangerine Nightmare for my Halloween dooming and it's a blast. Thank you for your efforts spreading the joy of Doom.
One of my favorite things to see in Doom wads is assets from other games from the era, especially Hexen and Heretic... But I saw one from Descent in the power up sequence in What Lies Beneath map04 Blacksite. Gonna have to go check this one out for myself, thanks for showing it off.

Great episode, I've played Fallen Leaves and What Lies Beneath. Both excellent. As a fan of Lovecraft's works I want to try Maskim Xul but I must confess I am very intimidated. At least it's consistent with the vibes of the Mythos.

Here I was thinking people have already experimented enough out of Doom's engine to surprise me, but when I saw Muumi's Magma Flow my jaw hit the floor. It's such a simple idea but manages to get a good execution.
I'm late but I wanted to commend you on Machete MAP30's sermon. It's arguably the best bit of writing on your channel and my personal favorite. The history lesson is twofold because you give context to the map and fuse it with your own experiences as a player. The Dean of 2021 wouldn't have been able to write that and hearing that growth in your compositions is a sort of payoff that I wouldn't expect from a TH-cam channel (and that's coming from someone that watches a lot of longform content).
Watching your channel's growth has been a treat.

Really loved What Lies Beneath. Gotta say though, the final map was a big letdown for me - just way too long and way too much going on. I marvel at the technical wizardry while also wishing the map was like a quarter of its length. It was enough to get me to call it quits on the WAD after looking at Clippy's video and realizing I was looking at a good hour and a half playtime on a blind run which I just can't do even for Doom. I was honestly a bit surprised you rated it so high given you tend to hold mappers accountable for "knowing when enough is enough" but I guess multiple playthroughs gives you the benefit of a more measured take whereas I made up my mind during my first try at it.
4:00 there's a gameplay option in zdoom to prevent that.

On the spoiler warning I decided to give What Lies Beneath a playthrough, and I'm glad I did! Unfortunately, I did something wrong along the way and a lot of the scripting ended up breaking. For instance, the big magma falls that you interact with in Magma Flow just didn't do any damage. And in Astral Sanctuary I missed an entire segment of the blue side because I was accidentally glitched through a fence. I eventually figured it out and redid it, but it kinda broke the flow for me. There were several areas in that map I was able to go that probably weren't intended; I chalk it up to my source port settings. I'll have to go through it again someday and make sure everything works, because a lot of these levels were really cool and had plenty of challenging fights (had to use many saves in the latter half...). Excellent recommendation!
You have likely used wrong compatibility level, outdated source port version or both. Magma and fences are all relying on MBF21 functionality, that are relatevely newly implemented in some source ports and are sometimes confused with MBF.
It's impossible to tell what went wrong in your case, but something along those lines.
