    I dunno, I always enjoyed the Map30 in this one but I suppose that's the speedrunner in me. I had the UV-Max record for like, 17 years? I personally enjoyed a good portion of the last 1/3rd of HR and appreciated Map27 Cyberpunk for doing something unique. Map29's dark secret is imo one of the worst things in the Megawad. Map23 is one of the hardest maps for sure but I *really* didn't enjoy it and the Arch-Vile ending absolutely makes me hate it. Afterlife is definitely the showstopper map. Map13 is great for the opening adrenaline rush (I rush for the SSG and center). Map16 is one that I personally think is toward the top of the wad and I find myself coming back to it more often than not.
    As someone who submitted to the Compet-N back in the early 2000s, Hell Revealed is, imo, one of the most important megawads that has ever come out. Sure, it isn't as detailed as things that came out around that time, such as Requiem, Memento Mori, Memento Mori 2, among others, but it's placement in Doom is pivotal. It was that rush that we needed for players that had already conquered the hardest stuff like Plutonia that had come out during the time. The concepts back then were fresh, original, vastly more challenging, and pushed things to the edge that we needed. Megawads were more focused on exploration over difficulty, for the most part, so this was sorely needed at the time of release. Despite it not holding up both aesthetically and plays like a bowl of slushed molasses, it's legacy is instrumental to future releases such as Alien Vendetta and Hell Revealed 2, which together I feel pushed slaughter style maps to strive for greater heights, harder difficulties, more clever combat, and better overall quality. I dare say without HR that there's a chance difficult slaughter *might* not be where it is today, or at least the landscape would look vastly different than it does today.
    One pivotal note here that I'd like to point out. Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv were between ages 14 and 16 when they released this. That's impressive, in my opinion, given the technological differences going on when this was released in map creation compared to today. Personally, I think this is the single most important Megawad released, regardless if you think it's great, nostalgic, grindy, memetic, or not at all fun.
    Dean really nailed it all here and this is a perfect encapsulation of everything this wad did good and bad.

    Hell Revealed is an interesting one to discuss, because its legacy to the slaughtermap concept is definitely one that still shows in Doom wads even to this day. And part of that legacy is also a bit of a roadmap for what not to do with these kinds of maps. Everyone starts somewhere, right? A lot of things in Hell Revealed don't work, but at this point, they kinda needed not to so the way would be paved for improvements. And hey, I'd say when it works, it really works!
    Afterlife I think is the best example of what Hell Revealed can pull off, but I do like City in the Clouds a lot, even though it definitely could do with less sadism. The concept of having to dance around fire while hunting down each weapon, and then dealing with a challenge to preserve each weapon, is one I really like, it's just... well, as you say, Hell Revealed is just not subtle. It's like the Roman Bacchanalia in Doom form, all about the excess.
    I do apologize for voting to put you through this, though, but as I said in the poll, TNT Revilution is just the perfect landmark episode kind of WAD, so I stick by it. But hey, better to do it now than to dread it later right?

    Yup, can confirm. That's the last HR map I played. I kinda liked the first five or so maps but then it became a savescumming grindfest. I pushed on for a bit but finally gave up after completing this map. If I ever play Russian Overkill, I might try a slaughtermap again but otherwise, this kind of gameplay is just nope. My personal threshold for difficulty lies somewhere around Plutonia.

Also I did not read all the comments before me to make sure someone didn't beat me to making the cumulative baron count. Yes I am aware that the video has a total baron count at the end; I still wanted to watch the numbers progressively go up like it's a stat in some RPG.

    Drat, almost forgot to comment on this one. I completely agree that Hell Revealed doesn't hold up so well nowadays, but I can understand why some gravitate towards it. It's like a grindhouse film, low on substance with ugly production values, but it nonetheless manages to tap into a base instinct that brings out the bloodlust in some people. And yet Afterlife manages to stand out like The Seventh Seal nestled between The Last House on the Left and Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! You never quite know what you're going to get when exploring nineties wads.
    Also, at the risk of stoking fires, I'd love to hear a Dean's Digression on the subject of slaughtermaps. I'm personally not a fan of them, but I concede that they can be fun if they feel like they want you to win but earn your victory (like Floating Arena in Ancient Aliens), instead of just wanting to crush you into pulp (like the back half of HR here). They continue to be a somewhat tricky topic to analyze in the Doom field, but I'd like to know what you specifically think about them! And as always, keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you've picked for the season finale.

    Hell Revealed also made part of my "DOOM MegaWAD Starter Pack" like the other classics I mentioned in the Requiem video, and to me it's also another MegaWAD that left an impression on me, in special Map 26, which might be the only saving grace from this WAD. Man, what a gorgeous and strange map. I think this was the one map that made me fall in love with DOOM and keep playing it ever since.
    I admit that this MegaWAD is much more appropiate as a piece of DOOM history than something you keep coming back to play on an endless loop like Nostalgia 2 but it's worth at least one gameplay, even with cheats enabled and/or mods like Guncaster and Russian Overkill to even the odds.

    For the most recognized wads of the 90s to be as obtuse and rectangular as they were, it really says a lot about the tools of the time. Editors like DeePSea are laughable nowadays in comparison to Ultimate Doom Builder and the like. We've gotten much better mappers, but they wouldn't have graced us anywhere near as much without the application getting better too, and I'm glad they did.
    I always thought this WAD was pretty ugly, and I think it mostly has to do with that sky. It's just a bunch of strange reds and pinks strewn together in a strange mold pattern. It makes the environments that are supposed to be on Earth feel like some strange Baron colored dimension.
    It's almost just as fun watching you tear apart horrible WADs, and it's crazy seeing this as the lowest grade on the show yet, but I would definitely hope that the season closes out with some quality.

    Hell Revealed was one of the first Doom fanmade megawads I've played along with Memento Mori. I started playing Doom back in 1997 when I was only 10 and got Final Doom later in 1998. However, I didn't play other custom wads and megawads until around 2003 and 2004, so at that time, I downloaded Hell Revealed when I first heard how it's as difficult if not more than Plutonia, and I was bowled over at how tough the game is. Despite that, and some frustrating aspects like groups of barons, I find it quite an enjoyable megawad, especially after playing through Plutonia many times, which I thought was grueling and punishing first time playing until I got the hang and know how of taking on the levels. My advise to anything thinking of Hell Revealed a go, don't go straight for Ultra-Violence. Instead go for I'm Too Young To Die or Hey Not Too Rough as both difficulties feel like Doom 2 on Ultra-Violence in terms of gameplay. You can also take on Hurt Me Plenty if you feel up for it as it delivers a stiff challenging while at the same time being fair and not too overwhelming. Ultra-Violence, yeah, only take on that difficulty if you really are a Doom god, but otherwise, stick with the lower difficulties. I do the same thing with Plutonia as I find Ultra-Violence on that wad too much for me. Hell Revealed holds a special place in my heart, especially with the Rise of the Triad music played in most of the maps as I'm a huge fan of the game and Apogee, and it gets me pumped up for the carnage that awaits. In terms of gameplay, Hell Revealed is by no means a slaughtermap-based megawad as there's only like a handful of maps that would qualify as such, and while it has a higher body count than Plutonia, for the most part when you're facing huge waves of enemies, they're in wide open areas, and the terrain is accordingly designed so that you can use them as cover to your advantage, whereas in Plutonia, in spite of having not as many monsters, the gameplay is more chaotic and brutal due to facing them, including the abundance of heavyweight monsters in compact and usually cramped areas that it makes you feel as if you're facing a large wave of them, and due to the way the levels are designed, you have no other choice but to fight them with what you've got. So if anything, Hell Revealed gives you a bit more leeway on fighting the enemies in many of the levels, which makes it equally as hard as Plutonia and Scythe. With more modern wads that takes fighting heavyweight enemies to ridiculous heights, Hell Revealed is a cakewalk in comparison, and its successors Alien Vendetta, the sequel, and Kama Sutra offer much tougher challenges than it ever could.

    Great review that highlights most of the wad’s qualities and flaws. That being said, while I appreciate HR’s contributions to the mapping scene (with map 24 in particular being a very influential level on its own, directly inspiring stuff like Alien Vendetta’s Dark Dome), it’s not really a wad I would reccomended to newcomers to the Doom community. Because even if they did not mind the high level of difficulty, I frankly doubt they would tolerate the overly simplistic and blocky level architecture, the poorly placed monster blocking lines, or the awkwardly placed walls of meat that serve absolutely no purpose besides grinding the pacing of the level to a halt (with map 23’s Archvile room and map 20’s Mancubus room being the absolute worst offenders).
    And while Donner and Niv never mapped again, I would argue Kama Sutra is the closest thing to a proper spiritual sucessor HR ever got. Except the former actually had the benefit of being designed at a time where most of the Doom community was far more experienced and had already figured out what worked and what didn’t in slaughtermaps (as seen in great wads such as Scythe and Alien Vendetta). Too bad most people nowadays only remember it for its memetic end boss, heh...

    Just wanted to say, your series is a Godsend. While I love the various discussion videos on this platform regarding Doom and its impressive missing community, I always wanted to see a video series dedicated to the extensive fan map packs that litter history's ruins, heh. Plus, your showcasing of the soundtracks available convinced me to stop listening to technical brutal death metal during my Doom playthroughs and instead listen to the wonderful MIDI songs these good people spent so long developing! I thought Eviternity's Dehydration would have dragged, but it's music made getting lost repeatedly worth it, heh.

    It's funny how after almost 30 years, Rise of the Triad's greatest contribution to gaming is still in its music, which was awesome. I remember as a kid making WADs in the mid 90s, and getting RotT as a gift. Moreso than actually playing the game, I was excited that the game's music was just in a folder on the CD, a collection of MIDI files waiting to be used for Doom WADs. RADAGIO was my favorite; I thought it made for good boss battle music.

    Started playing this WAD recently despite being turned off by Slaughter wads years ago. The first 10 maps so far have been fun. As soon who has played a number of 90s WADs, Barons used to get a lot more love in the early days of Doom map making. The Memento Mori series and Requiem loved Barons. I can't imagine pistol starting this entire WAD. Shotgunning Barons brings back memories of playing Doom 1 for years and finishing them slowly with that.

  • @ev77s4f
    @ev77s4f 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hell Revealed was created by speedrunners and needs to be approached with a speedrunning mentality: playing the levels blind with saves is pretty much the most miserable way to approach the WAD. Instead you need to learn the maps and try different routes, until you develop a strategy for systematically dismantling them. This is especially true for map14 and map24 (two of the best maps in the set).

    • @ev77s4f
      @ev77s4f 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One concrete example: in your video you go into map13's blue key room with 101 health and 0 armor. But the level has a soul sphere and blue armor. Also, you slowly chip away at the chaingunners and revenants with the SSG instead of quickly blowing them up with rockets... with better routing you can easily survive the blue key cage with no RNG needed at all.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, it's better not approached at all. Let it be in the past where it belongs like the crude primitive tools of archaeological exhibits.

    Thanks once again Dean. Would've never tried this one out if not your video. After Alien Vendetta I felt up to the challenge, and was surprised to find Hell Revealed's not THAT much harder than AV. Only a few levels gave me excessive trouble. Then again, I wasn't going for 100% kills, but I did play UV saveless. Overall I agree that a lot of the maps are dated and kinda bad, but the feeling of accomplishment was worth it, and there were a few diamonds in the rough (maps 32 and 22 especially). Many of them were fairly harmless, especially the first ten maps and the last 5 or so... except map 30 >_<
    Map 16 is indeed terrible, I agree.

  • @vr0p
    @vr0p 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I had my fun with HR once upon a time, and agree few of the maps aged well... BUT
    I think solo play was more of a joke for this set, and co-op was the intended experience (essentially anyone downloading this in the 90's was a multiplayer addict). Also the only ones who were pistol starting were compet-n participants, or sadists who already played the set to death... you really doubled down on self inflicted punishment with the pistol starts

      Possibly my all time favorite, next to Hellbound. This one sees constant play for me, as the ability to quickly dive in well over one's head is rapturous in Vanilla, mods like Complex Clusterfuck or Project Brutality make this into a distinctly "modern" flavor that I honestly believe some alternative dimension John and John made. Doom as it would have been had it been now.
      It all culminates in an immense sense of skill and power when you can finally rush a room filled to the gills with demonic dangers, and smoothly unleash a scene of violence so complete it often gives pause in appreciation. God damn I love the Doom mapping community
