Yes ma’am… 4c hair can be just as straight using roller sets regardless of texture. Your set came out beautifully! Hers always came out so straight I thought she had a relaxer😂😂 but after she shampooed her kinky curls came right back!! Her hair always had so much body and movement.
I'm so excited to see more women going back to this way of straightening hair. I used to do it this way years ago or I would go to the salon for a wash and set. I love sitting under the dryer because I could sit and check my email, read a magazine, watch TV or have a nap. I can't tell you the difference that made me feel. Before I knew it, the hairstylist would be waking me up from my nap. That little nap was sometimes all I needed.

This is the best roller set I've seen on natural hair on youtube! Everyone else seems to be flat ironing after the set and I really don't want to do that. This was amazing.
NICE! In the 80's-90's we called this a "wet set". We used the Lotta Body setting GEL. The hair, back then, would set with a super shiny, glassy gloss. They've changed the formula, of course, since then. Thanks for bringing the technique back💜✌🏽

This video took me back to my relaxer days in the late 90s & early 2000s! I’m 42 years old & the good old school roller wrap hairstyle GREW my hair & made it HEALTHIER! Unfortunately, my stylist has retired, because she said “most of clients wanted BONE STRAIGHT hair without the body”! She didn’t like using flat irons all the time, just the old school hot comb & rollers. She was tired of being told “how other stylists were using this & that to get bone straight hair”. But I’ve always loved the roller wrap hairstyle & I may need to get my cousin to do it for me. I use KeraCare products whenever I use heat on my hair.
I always got my hair done like this growing up and in my twenties I cut all my hair off and had to start all over because of a bad hair cut/color that drove me crazy. I grew my hair out all natural, no heat for about 5 years. Finally went back to the dominicans (I'm dominican) to get my hair done, not only were the rollers super loose, she then blow dried excessively and wanted to flat iron after. I literally got into an argument with her about not using the flat iron, she insisted! I had to be like ma'am, I'm old school, I wanted to roller set, just a little blowdry to get the roots and call it a day. My hair smelled so burned I had to have her cut 4 inches off. Fast forward to me ordering a whole set for my house and learning how to do it through youtube lol. Bone straight was never my thing and I dont want heat damage. I cant trust salons anymore, I was so disappointed.
You're the only person literally I've seen on youtube. That did a silk wrap without a blow dryer or flat iron, and yet your hair looks so silky smoth it looks like you did a silk press. It's that shiny and straight im like, how do you do it? I haven't seen anyone's hair look this good unless they blow dry their hair or flat iron it or both to get this look. im still shook😩😘
@tresstoimpress4224 What's the difference between the purple rollers and the grey rollers that gave your hair that flat iron look besides different the sizes of the rollers 🤷🏾♀️ I would love to do this style😊🥰
In South Africa, we call the "wrapping" part swirling, and we use a stocking instead of cling. We used to sleep with it on at night. Well done on bringing old school back 💕🇿🇦
this is the exact process my mom and aunties used to do for me decades ago. they have both passed, but this technique is alive and well with a younger generation and will no doubt continue the test of time. It was really cool to see it on you 💕.
This was all day at the salon, roller sets and wraps then saran wrap under the heat cap... you did a throw back on this one 👍🏽 people often forget the oldie but goodies
I did this in the 60's 70's and 80's THAT'S how we did it Ladies! Women used to use TIN CANS before there were plastic rollers. Anyone remember DIPPITY DOO? 💚 Anyone remember the BIG PUFFY HAT hair dryers? Just be careful not to tighten the rollers too much, because pulling your hair too much can lead to hair LOSS!!! 😳
I did not tell my aunt ( a hair stylist) that I had tried to roller set my 4c hair with Dippity Do. I was in high school before relaxers were the norm for me. I went to her to complete my "freshly washed and poofy dried" hair. She did not know on earth was wrong with my washed and dried hair. I finally told her because her straightening comb was having a very hard time! (You think?!)
Wow, I would've never thought to use tin cans lol! No rollers are big enough to accommodate the length of my hair but I think a Pepsi can ought to do the trick😉 Thank you.
I LOVE rollersetting my hair, I just hate the drying time. My texture is kinky, coily, course, and extremely dense. Your tips are perfect. It’s all about tension, roller size, and keeping the hair wet as you roll. I only suggest hourglass rollers for those with a kinkier texture. I also use a tangle teaser to get the hair smooth. I LOVE your end results.

Yes, I still use this process today. There was a great product called Lotta Body for all hair that was a great setting lotion. Yes, the dryer is a must. Check it out if it is still sold at the beauty supply store.
Roller set curls last much longer. Keeps the hair stronger thicker and healthier. That’s why I never stopped doing it. My hair dresser uses heat styling for those who requests it but her default style is the good old fashioned wash and roller set ..
This will work with kinkier hair as long as you follow the same technique. The hair has to be soaking wet, lots of setting lotion, pulled taunt, and dried completely. The rollers do have to be the correct size and it will help if the hair is longer.
Thanks for the advice! I have a kinky section, but my hair is thin and fine, so I haven’t been able to help much with the questions about denser, kinkier textures!❤️❤️❤️❤️
They make rollers in all sizes! Keep looking and you will find a roller that suits your length. The clips are important too. Sometimes you have to go to a beauty supply shop to find the right ones. MMB
We called this a doobie back in the day! & my hair was so healthy! Why didn’t I think to do this in this day and age!!! Thank you Queen, you look flawless! 🌹

That came out beautiful! Simple roller sets have always been so simple and elegant. I recently have gone back to wearing them. I’m 52 now, but when I was in my 20’s this was my go to style. I noticed so much new length when I go without heat for about three months. It’s beautiful,

@@Truth_seeker777 afro texture meaning 4c hair. the woman's hair texture in the video isn't 4c. she has a looser curl pattern which makes straightening her with rollers and mousse easier, versus 4c, which is a kinkier, course, and tighter coiled texture with dubious shrinkage, this technique may or may not work.
This came out absolutely GORGEOUS! This is how hair looked when I was a small child in the 80s. Women rolled their hair every night and it was always so full, bouncy, and beautiful. Like Nadine from Whats Happening Now or Brenda from 227 ❤
You're such a pro! Thanks for a great demo of a healthy option to all the new fangled hair styling routines. Back in '65 my mom would send me and my sister to the hairdresser to get ready for holidays where we'd get a shampoo, press & curl. I loved watching Ms. Velma do exactly what you do for her older customers. Only difference, she'd fold what looked like little square tissues over the end of each section before rolling it.

We have always done the rollers and hairdryer in the Dominican Republic sine I was 8 y/o, i am now 48! It truly is the best method to maintaining healthy hair.
In Jersey we call this process a Doobi It’s w/ the option to getting the roots blown straight. Made popular buy Dominican salons. Silk wraps are more popular now. Very pretty outcome 😍
This is how I go straight when I want a more dressy style. Leaving my hair natural for more than 15 years gave me the flexibility of wearing it curly during the summer, and straight during the winter in NY. Thank you for the tip of the cling wrap. ❤❤❤
Wow I had no idea it was possible to get such a straight look using this method! I never want to use straightening irons again so this will come in handy!
@@tresstoimpress4224 Your hair came out beautiful!!! How long does this style last you? Will it last for the week until you wash your hair again the following week if you just wrap it every night?
Humidity resistant?? That's all I need to hear. But for real? It won't frizz up in the heat?? I am going to a wedding in May in Charlotte and I would love to wear my hair like this
Finally the BEST curly hair roller video!! Where you show the FULL process without cutting or skipping. I always wondered how they do the back of the head. Also you explained in soo much detail. Thank you!
I'm Native American and I used to wrap my hair back in the day. Natives do theirs a little different. My hair was very long and naturally curly if I would wash and let it air dry. I would roll the crown of my head with just 3 rollers and wrap my the rest wet to the right of my head. Let that dry and take down just the wrapping part and wrap the other way to the left side. Get back under the dryer again. Oh I used a lot of the big black bobbin pins to wrap it. I loved the finish process. I need to start back doing that. Oh your hair is beautiful. 💞
Like me, I Asian Pacific Islander origin, I Did that to my hair and it did the opposite, made it frizzier. It grew out straighter, and now keep shaved in Manbun.
The way your hair looked as soon as you took the rollers out was beautiful. It was very 50’s 60’s reminiscent, curly bouncy, it was lovely. You did a great job all the at around.
You have made me appreciate how much time and the perfecting techniques it takes for natural curly hair. I did this exact process with wavy hair when I was a teen. I gave up.
Unfortunately, black girls got carried away with using blow dryers, like the white girls. Their hair being naturally oily in most cases, all white hair has more natural oil than blacks, can tolerate the heat from blow dryers! OURS CANNOT?I think a lot of hair dressers started using blow drying instead of rolling, because it takes lots less time. At the same time, using oil on black hair became less popular. These two disasters brought about a lot of breakage and weaving and gluing and sewing became a solution. Well, those tactics brought about missing edges and bald spots! Which led us back to wigs and lace front wigs. Glad to see rollers makings come back.Dont forget to oil scalp and ends. The type of oil you use depends on your hair type. Welcome rollers and hair dryers! Goodby blowdryers! MMB
@@Angel-lt1sh And that is why ladies had stronger healthier hair. Don't get me wrong I love to see the pretty wigs and weaves but the damage can be pretty bad if you don't know what you're doing. Old school all the way down my back all mine.
This an old school Do-Be, roller set and a wrap. We used to do these back in the 80's and 90's and everyone had much healthier hair. The Chi line that is being used, is excellent for wearing your hair straight. Great video, your hair looks beautiful.
I remember when I used to roller set my hair and it looked exactly like yours. 😊. I rarely straighten these days, but when I do, it’s with a flat iron. This video was nostalgic! 💖
😍🥰 I’ve been natural for so long I almost forgot about the big bucket of rollers I have and what they can do!!!... I’m definitely trying this soon. Your did awesome and you look fabulous 💕💕💕
Yes! I'm glad I seen your beautiful set and comments. I 4got about my rollers. I been natural for years, only rocking my fro. It's time for my roller set.

My hair use to be your consistency, but I haven't been putting the care into upkeep and it's gotten a bit thinner. I can tell you and your Mother. have a very good relationship, and I know she is proud of you. I will share this video.
I've never stopped roller wrapping my hair. Ive been doing it since 9th grade and I'm in my 50s. Ive always owned a hooded dryer during those years. Your hair looks beautiful. 😍
I’m just now watching this video and when you wrapped your hair in cling wrap and sat under the dryer for another ten minutes to smooth out and give that pressed look is literally genius!! I will definitely be trying that! Thank you!!!
Off to the hair store to get the rollers! I want to grow my hair back out evenly, and I love the ease of the pattern you used. Let me say I am encouraged :)
I remembered being referred to a Dominican salon because I didn’t wanna perm my natural thick 4c hair unfortunately that was the first time I felt so embarrassed both salons suggested a perm like they couldn’t do my natural thick hair,my daughter in law who suggested them said she watched the salon do a Dominican hair that was really thick as mine
One year for my birthday, i went to a stylist and she did a roller set on my natural hair and let me tell you-it looked AMAZING! (I doubt i could pull it off myself as youve done... awesome job😍)
I've not put rollers in my hair for years. Like you said there is a section where your arms sure can ache. This is by far the best way to get a decent long lasting wave. I enjoyed the video and the products thank you from the UK 🇬🇧
Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!! Now, I need to try this because after you wrapped your hair in the cling wrap and then got back under the dryer, the results were amazing!!!
This video helped me soooooo much! Within the first 3 minutes I learned 2 major rules I never knew after watching hair videos for almost 2 years now. THANK YOU and please keep up with the videos & the knowledge-----hair is always Beautiful like yourself!!!
Cher, I used to do this every week, it brings back such memories, I had beautiful super long natural wavy 36 to 40 inch hair as a child, I'm Latin and all the women in my family had a Huge old heavy hood hair dryer and we always used magnetic rollers to do our hair, I hated sitting under that super duper hot hot dryer for hours to achieve that super straight look, but honey it was worth it, until it rained or high humidity, ugh!! All that time work sweating under that dryer was wasted with the rain and high humidity!! Mayben with the Chi Keratin products I may not have frizz, I'm wearing my hair with extensions now, no work no sweat wash and go!! Yah, if the power goes out how could I have beautiful in slick flowing locks, ( long silky extensions) ya!!!
Gorgeous. So glad my mom made me learn how to roller set my coils. We used the rolling paper with wire mesh rollers. I'll have to revisit soon. Will try with the Lotta Body foaming wrap and compare it to their old school setting lotion. Thanks for sharing.
I live by deep condition and roller set and wrap. My hair is so thick and long from doing this so I agree stay away from the blow drier and flat iron as much as possible. Your hair will grow so healthy and long if you want your hair longer. Days when I don't wear my hair out, I leave it wrapped up in a silk scarf or a very loose ponytail.
I’ve been drenching my hair in a lottabody roller set since I was a preteen. This method works. My hair is a 4c and I’ve found that this method works best on my hair type with smaller rollers, like the purple or a size smaller.
You did a wonderful job young lady. I was upset on the thumbs down…you did so well that you had a few haters…so you know you did something right! Looking forward to growing my hair back with this regimen.
Hi there That reminded me when my hair was done, lord I hated and cried getting hair done. My grand-ma used Hotcomb, There was no discussion of perms, we all went to school, in 60’s hair salon’s made lots money, press & curl. You look Fabulous and Beautiful. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋🌹🌹🌹
Really nice, thanks for this lesson. Back in the day this was called a "a set" before blow drying and "bumping" with pressing comb or heated metal plate became the rage..
This method is totally lost today in salons! I can’t find ANY salon that does this anymore where I live. It’s all blow dry and flat iron! Thanks for the tip on HOW to do the curlers. I’ve never mastered it. Will try your way!
You need to find an older stylist that can do this! It seems to me, the old school beauticians are the only ones that can do this! Otherwise, you’ll have to go to a Dominican salon, like the lady mention in the comment above......
Great job👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I may try this myself. When I went natural, I tried and failed many times on roller set and bendy rod and just gave up and let the pros do it. Nowadays, the professional don’t want do it anymore, braids are the big money maker
I’ve been doing this when I go to my Dominican hair salon for years. You don’t have to blow out and flat iron; at the salon just tell them what to do. Bring what you need. I forgot to mention my hair is natural and I’ve been natural for 25 years; my hair length is past my shoulder blades or down the middle of my back.
I wish I would have seen this two weeks ago. My hair is SO damaged that I might have to cut it off, and I've been growing it for 4 yrs. I'm just sick thinking about going to the Jada Pinkette style i 90 almost bald.
Hi!! I'm new to your channel and thank you for your demonstration. I'm over 60 and never was good at using hair rollers well you taught me how. Thank you very much for your time. Your hair is beautiful. God bless.
Happy to see that everything old, is new again!! I used to do this to my hair back in the 70s. The old Disco days when hair was long and feathered. Only problem I had back then, was if it got humid, my hair would get pouffy like crazy. We didn't have the mousse or serums But hey the big Afro was in back then too. 🌺✌🏼💃🏽✌🏼🌺
You never want to take the moisture out of your hair. You just don't want the coating that comes with the products used for wearing natural curly styles. When you use products like Mielle, you won't get the lightness and volume you will with other products like Chi. Your hair turned out beautiful!!! Love it!
I don’t t usually watch hair videos but I’m glad I watched yours!! I’m a Cosmetology Instructor and you did a great job! I also love the way you explained what you’re doing! One tip I’m gonna suggest is that you get some roller clips you have pin-curl clips they work but roller clips are more secure and won’t pertude off the roller.

When my hair was the healthiest, I would get this done and flat iron it myself. My stylist was the same way!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes honey, come thru 90s with the roller wrap!
I wish body would come back. I think it might. I hate pin straight hair.
@@tachi4002 that's why I do my hair myself, I ain't got time no mo lol lol
You're the only person literally I've seen on youtube. That did a silk wrap without a blow dryer or flat iron, and yet your hair looks so silky smoth it looks like you did a silk press. It's that shiny and straight im like, how do you do it? I haven't seen anyone's hair look this good unless they blow dry their hair or flat iron it or both to get this look. im still shook😩😘
Thanks for tuning in!!🥰🥰🥰
@tresstoimpress4224 What's the difference between the purple rollers and the grey rollers that gave your hair that flat iron look besides different the sizes of the rollers 🤷🏾♀️ I would love to do this style😊🥰
In South Africa, we call the "wrapping" part swirling, and we use a stocking instead of cling. We used to sleep with it on at night. Well done on bringing old school back 💕🇿🇦
In Brazil is the same and we call "touca", yep, sleep overnight, and in the morning the hair is gorgeous.
How do you sleep with those on the head? 😅 It is even possible?
I wrap with a scarf at night for bed as well!
this is the exact process my mom and aunties used to do for me decades ago. they have both passed, but this technique is alive and well with a younger generation and will no doubt continue the test of time. It was really cool to see it on you 💕.
Nice job! Thanks for sharing ❤
Standard way we did our hair in the 1970-1980’s No chemicals. Healthy hair. Way better than burning your hair out with flat ironing.

Anyone remember the BIG PUFFY HAT hair dryers?
Just be careful not to tighten the rollers too much, because pulling your hair too much can lead to hair LOSS!!! 😳
I did not tell my aunt ( a hair stylist) that I had tried to roller set my 4c hair with Dippity Do. I was in high school before relaxers were the norm for me. I went to her to complete my "freshly washed and poofy dried" hair.
She did not know on earth was wrong with my washed and dried hair. I finally told her because her straightening comb was having a very hard time! (You think?!)
Dippity Doo! No trip to the five and dime store was complete without it! Woolworths, Newberry, National Dollar, Pic n Save, etc!
I remember the dippity doo and dippity doo commercials! 😊
Yes ma’am used all of them except the tin cans😉
Wow, I would've never thought to use tin cans lol! No rollers are big enough to accommodate the length of my hair but I think a Pepsi can ought to do the trick😉 Thank you.
I LOVE rollersetting my hair, I just hate the drying time. My texture is kinky, coily, course, and extremely dense. Your tips are perfect. It’s all about tension, roller size, and keeping the hair wet as you roll. I only suggest hourglass rollers for those with a kinkier texture. I also use a tangle teaser to get the hair smooth. I LOVE your end results.
What do hourglass rollers look like
An hour and a half to dry is a lot especially after spending so much time putting the rollers in.

This wrap thing is for nothing
This is exactly how I used to set my hair for heat free smooth styles back in the late 80s. It's nice to see this gen learning the same technique.
Exactly!
Same for me. When I had a relaxer this is what I did to my hair.
Right... It’s applying enough setting lotion and making sure it’s dried completely & the size of the rollers to help stretch/straighten out the hair.
They make rollers in all sizes! Keep looking and you will find a roller that suits your length. The clips are important too. Sometimes you have to go to a beauty supply shop to find the right ones. MMB
