the reason why the US has extremely old politicians is because modern politics is entirely influenced by money. election results (for all govt positions) are frequently a product of who corporate and ultrawealthy donors decide to spend the most money on. the tradeoff for those corporations is that the politicians that they donate to will advocate for legislation that fits corporate interests (e.g. deregulation, tax cuts, etc) meaning they can churn out bigger and bigger profits. said politicians tend to be older and align with corporate interests because they come from a generation that was around before america went started going through financial crises and the ongoing culture war. on the other hand, younger candidates tend to be populists whose policies are favored by the people (especially younger voters) but conflict with the interests of corpos. thus the corpos indirectly force the young populist candidates out of the race by dumping millions of dollars into their opponents' campaign funds. the whole system is disgusting and is genuinely ruining the country.
