    Once upon a time there was only the Lewenthal recording of this attractive concerto followed in short order by Ponti's. In fact, Ponti seems to have always recorded anything that came out by other pianists and then some: the Raff after Frank Cooper made his, the Reinecke 1st after Gerald Robbins made his on Genesis Records although Ponti seems to have beaten everyone to the punch with the Moskowitz. Ponti's playing is always faster and more exciting than most probably because Ponti's technique was on a Horowitzian level and he was a really fast learner with something like 50 plus concertos under his belt as I recall reading somewhere. We should hear more of these forgotten gems in the concert hall although there is a young gentleman named Evren Ozel who has a video of him playing this concerto live in concert which lovers of forgotten piano concertos should check out.

      Thank you!
      Ponti began recording in 1961. He was noted for his wide-ranging recordings of the unknown romantic repertoire ( "The Romantic Piano Concerto Anthology", seven volumes, the Vox label; Henselt' piano concerto was released in 1969 in Candide series)
      He recorded a series of concertos, many of which had never been recorded before, and some of which have been unrecorded since.
      Unfortunately, in the late 1990s, a stroke left him without the use of his right hand and arm.

      @@sibarit101 Yes, I had many of Ponti's recording on the Vox label way back when. Ponti had a prodigious memory and could almost as soon play some of these less difficult works on sight . Well, if Ponti started recording these in 1961 then I suppose it was many other pianists who were copying his recordings instead. I found it interesting that the one Ponti never recorded which would have been the easiest of the bunch was the Brull Piano Concertos. I don't know the First but Frank Cooper a musicologist made a recording on Genesis Records of the 2nd in C maj which was a very beautiful piece full of innocence and charm. I got the score from the Library of Congress and started learning it in hopes of performing it with a local symphony but nothing came of that.

      @JJTownley_Classical-Composer Thanks again!
      According to information available on the net, Brüll's musical output was suppressed during his lifetime, his music was banned and his manuscripts were burned.
      Brüll Piano Concerto No. 2 in C major with Frank Cooper was released in 1972, but due to multiple errors and gaps in Brüll's original manuscript, it appears that Cooper rewrote/modified parts of the score himself.
      In 1999, Hyperion Records released a good recording of Brull's two piano concertos performed by Martin Roscoe. I don't know which scores, modified or not, were used.
      I am a simple listener of the music of some forgotten composers (when there are satisfactory recordings). You are a musician, so I wish you the best of luck in researching and performing the music of these forgotten composers!

    The performance of the famous Porti has a little more fire than that of Vinicour. Adolf von Henselt must be brought out of obscurity. Everytime I feel overwhelmed by his concertos and can hear it if necessary 24/7. Thanks again for all your good work to bring them alive for us listeners!

    What I want from Romantic music is almost a condensed song.

      Is there only one such wonderful concerto? I think the composer is very curious about what kind of songs are available for solo piano works.

    Anche se prediligo la versione eseguita da R.Lewenthal con la LSO (insuperabile l'entrata in rapide ottave discendenti iniziale) , Ponti si 'difende' alla grande,fornendo un'interpretazione più rilassante. Un saluto a Sibarit per questo ottimo inserimento.

      I'd also like to listen to new recordings of composers from the romantic golden age of the piano, but it seems that many of the composers from that period are too little known to today's audiences. Current artists and record labels do not want to get involved in such projects, probably because it all comes down to money: how many people would buy the new albums?

    Thanks for your upload my friend. Henselt is one of my favourite romantic composers. This wonderful concerto is technically demanding but this is not the reason why it is so criminally ignored .... c'mon (almost) everyone plays Rachmaninov that is more demanding than (although way inferior to) Henselt. Besides, even technically relatively easier music than this one, from several other composers, is ignored.
    Thus I'm convinced technical demand is not the rational behind (can be the rational behind the fact most ignore music like that of Méreaux that is at limits of human possibility).
    Unfortunately Henselt (as you also reported) suffered from mental disorder and although extremely reputable while active and respected by many "colleagues" even when he stopped activities, he rapidly disappeared from radar of music lovers once he passed away.
    Thus, despite his musical quality has caliber comparable with that of most famous romantic composers, it has got scarce "appeal" for pianists. Nor listeners express strong demand to have him included into concert hall programs, simply because they just ignore he existed.
    His solo piano studies are as good as Chopin's ones and scatteted other pieces are also at top. Obviously Chopin is .... Chopin .... but Henselt shouldn't be too shy and can look at him "au pair"
    This concerto is better than both of Chopin's concertos and as good as Schumann's one IMHO. Still I prefer both Brahms concertos, but Brahms couple is possibly the "non plus ultra" of romantic piano concertos.
    Sadly .... if you ask 100 music listeners whether they like Henselt, I fear a good 75% would answer "who?" and among remaining 25% most would admit it's just a name, not associated with anything they remember having listened or maybe it is but only with something they probably forgot.
    Very sadly.

    • @sibarit101
      @sibarit101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Pietro Landri! You're right, all sorts of explanations were sought for the way Henselt was forgotten, maybe your explanation has more truth: "Henselt? Who is?" But that doesn't explain why the musicians and pianists didn't make an effort to get him out of the fog of oblivion .... Finally, this is the situation, we have to accept it.
      I am sincerely glad that this concert has some appreciations from those who know the concerto and from those who, perhaps, listen to it for the first time. Because that's all I can do for Henselt: to bring his music to a small group of listeners who are on youtube.
      Thank you again!

      Henselt is an absolutely superb and extremely prolific composer, but sadly ignored overlooked. His piano concerto is a masterpiece. But why is it necessary to claim that Rachmaninoff was 'way inferior?' Besides being grossly untrue, it is also nonsense and shows your ignorance. Rachmaninoff was a genius and a sensational (and also prolific) composer, though despised by modernists. He also was a great admirer of Henselt. Why can't you just leave it it that instead of the pointless negativism? Oddly and regrettably, Henselt stopped composing when he was in his early 30s. Possibly from depression, but no one seems to know why.

      1) I compare caliber of music of whomever with whomever else, first and foremost
      2) I comment what I want to comment and shall not be intimidated by any specimen who's thinking differently (that's legitimate) but wants to shut off me (that's absolutely unlegitimate), secondly
      3) Besides, "grossly untrue and nonsense" is an arrogant statement when it comes to judging opinons and shows only YOUR inability to carry out a healthy discussion
      4) Not the least, "ignorance" is a concept normally used by a poor and narrow minded anyone who's simply judging himself by a mirror and that has no other topic than insults.
      In a public blog (especially when you have absolutely no damn clue with whom you are unnecessarily coming to terms) you should show more respect for divergent opinions, politely telling us why you disagree and nurture a healthy discussion.
      Insulting and intimidating others precipitates you into the bunch of wrestlers and solely manages to dilute whatever good topic you may have written
      Reflect and - if you still have some residual intellectual honesty - apologize: it's never too late!!!

      The Henselt Piano Concerto is more difficult than all Rach Concertos, including the Third. One needs to be a special kind of virtuoso to tackle those monstrous stretches at speed and give a good reading of it. Yuja Wang would run home crying after trying to play it.

      'Rachmaninov that is more demanding than (although way inferior to) Henselt'
      To my ears Henselt *maybe* stands somewhere in relation to Scharwenka and Moszkowski even that's pushing it a little.

  • @alessandropelizzoli6613

    Henselt' s Pianism is always rich and with an attitude towards poliphonic writing, probably the non- consistent attention to his creations derived from a certain taste for classicistic roots in his style, romantic but sometimes very similar to certain aspects typical of Mendelssohn...his melodism Is well crafted but not memorable, and probably his best themes are to be searched in his Characteristic Etudes Op 2...
    But...Even in that opus Henselt' s Taste is without any trace of strong and unique personality: Always reminds us a bit of Mendelssohn, a touch of Schumann, some decoration or sonority of Chopin, the polished style of Thalberg....
    We have a great composer but very inclined to became a sort of compendium of an epoch...
    This pleasant, astounding Concerto, remarkable for the beauty of construction and for the clever use of the instrumental medium, is a perfect exemplum of the sensations previously described...the second movement is the sum- up of this various influences ( here also Brahms and Liszt...in those references probably it' s even a case of anticipation...).
    So, a lack in nowadays repertoire, surely...but we have better and more original Concertos to listen to...( for example the Mendelssohn' s , not so performed nowadays....i' m referring also to Caprice Brillant, or Serenade and Allegro Giojoso....).

    • @sibarit101

      Thank you for analyzing Henselt's music, but please accept that there is no a "standard of taste", the great variety of tastes and opinions that prevail in the world are obvious. So the taste of the general public does not always take into account the analysis made by the connoisseurs and musical researchers.

      @@sibarit101 absolutely true! I agree.
      However it' s a pity ( and a reality...) that Henselt' s Music is not at the center of interests not only of the musicians ( probably unjustly...) but also of the large public...
      I, on my side, have studied some of his Studies and also of his individual pieces: absolutely pleasant, well- written, Music.
      Not the Music of an Absolute Genius, but good enough to be rediscovered.
      P.S. in every case my digression about Henselt' s Style was not a " statement" but only an hypotesis...

    • @findelka1810
      @findelka1810 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with some of your statements, he is indeed a compendium of the romantic era’s music, well said! Some of his études are however already memorable to me even though I only discovered him. There is a certain backward bias working though with ‘forgotten’ composers. In order to remember their works and melodies you have to listen to them more than once, otherwise they don’t stick. But you don’t get the chance to listen to it more, bc they’re not played. I can tell you this was the case with me and Hummel’s music. The more I listen to it the more I love it and the more I remember it all, now I have full piano concertos running in my head. So in order to bring back these composers we have to start listening and playing them. And one can spread the word between professionals, too so they start doing the same.
