Average Tech Guy how would I transfer photos from my cams mem card usb readers I have the older compact flash cards with usb card readers to usb ? Wouldn’t the Apple dongle need 2 USB ports? One for the card reader and one for a SSD drive ?

Connect a self powered USB hub into the the apple adapter first, then you can connect as many USB devices as you’d like.
Well, "Average", nice vid, well-done, useful info however, there's a more convenient expandable, removable storage available. You may already be aware since creating this great demo, however, for others SanDisk offers a built-in USB Type-A connection, iXpand Flash Drive (128GB, 256GB) for example.
There are others but we find the SanDisk more reliable from our perspective and experience with SanDisk (we purchase most of our storage, etc from B&H, attempting to avoid Amazon at all costs for these types of purchases). Compared to other flashd rives though, these USB Type-A drives are a "bit" more pricey than the standard USB 2 or 3 flash drives.
CORRECTION: An acquaintance brought my attention to an error in the above comments. I inadvertently referred to "USB Type-A" (USB on my brain this morning!) when it should've read "Lightning" connection with reference to the iPhones external storage.

As discussed later. You will need a power hub to provide the additional power required to work the Sandisk 1TB and bigger. I used the Sabrent usb power supply discussed later in the thread and it worked fine. Thank you all.

I’m using the same set up but still get the message: “Cannot use accessory. Extreme SSD: This accessory requires too much power.”. I’m plugged into mains via the lightning port and have the 2TB Extreme Pro SSD attached to the USB port.
I’m getting the same thing - I have just looked at the SanDisk responses on Amazon, apparently the the 1tb & 2tb are not rated for mobile devices! Rather frustrating really as I have just purchased the 1tb extreme pro based on several reviews demonstrating compatibility!!
As of today I just got the USB3 A1619 Camera adapter. No joy same power alert. But what is troubling, I try to charge my ipad or my iphone from the adapters USB 3 using either a usb charger on mains OR an Anker PD power bank, and THERE IS NO JUICE COMING out of this USB ADAPTER port. Tried it both with or without the lightning being plugged into a device. Saying I can plug this into my ipad and it charges. But trying to charge my iphone from the SO CALLED powered usb port, NO JOY.
Did I get a defective A1619?

I heard that when people use SanDisk portable SSD to connect to iPad and use it for long time, the portable SSD might get hot and it’s no longer read and write. So be aware of that.

Just a heads up - this doesn't work with the 2TB Sandisk Extreme SSD on an iPhone for some reason. Seems to work on an iPad. No idea why. No power consumption warning. Tried reformatting the SSD too. No workie. Guys at apple store stumped too. I've read it works with a powered USB Hub. Maybe need a smaller SSD? weird that 500gig works & 2TB doesn't.

I know this is an older video but have you ever seen the code " Cannot use Accessory" Extreme 55AE: This accessory requires too much power. Everything is plugged up correctly. Cannot seem to get photos transferred to either laptop or the same sandisk you are using.

Okay, I believe I followed the steps like you showed them and my iPhone updated, but now I'm not seeing the SSD drive listed in the locations of the files. Any suggestions or thoughts on why this is happening?

Sandisk Extreme SSD Pro does not work with iPhone 11 pro. You need the iPhone powered adapter + a powered USB split cable and male to male USB cable. I wrote to Sandisk, went to iPhone store, but this is the only solution so far, that works so so.

hello, i have an iphone 11 with recently updated ios 16 and i bought a 1tb sandisk ssd extreme, i have the iphone lightning and usb 3 to lightning adapter and a 20w charger adapter, when doing the same as in the video i don't it doesn't detect anything in the FILES folder. What I can do?
Do you think an Apple branded USB-C to Lightning Cable will work or does it have to be powered? Also, do you have to format the SanDisk to exFAT for it to work with the iPhone?

Good to see it works and ssd read and write speeds are extremely fast however this setup with the usb cable will defiantly impair the read and write speeds right?

@pkandhai doubt it and it's probably an issue on your end, 1 tb and 2 tb should work just like the 500gb one because nothing changes in the whole process.

finally did it work with 1 or 2 TB SSD? I've tried with Sandisk SSD 1TB in different ways of connection (powered / non-powered) but none of them worked... not sure if this is the issue of Sandisk or SSD. Tried with iPad and iPhone, nothing worked.

hi ! i tried the extreme ssd 500gb after watched this video with ios 13 in iphone xs max. the first 2 days was ok, my intention was to backup my photos in my albums.. the adapter update window did pop up and i didn’t even plug my ssd into any pc before that.. and everything were smooth, the ssd will appear in the files folder and i successfully transferred my photos there too.. however the third day when i want to continue moving photos as usual, it wasn’t able to detect the ssd anymore, no matter what i tried.. i wondering what went wrong and still unable to identify the cause yet.. i have also updated my ios to 14.4.2 to see if it could support but still not helping.. could anyone please help?
problem solved ! i connect the ssd into pc and a message pop up said that hard drives need to scan and fix or it might have trouble on storage. so i just follow and then it’s fixed.. files transferred from the phone previously were shown in the pc as well.. and my phone was able to detect the ssd again after that..

I am thinking about mobility, which means do I have to look for a power point for the power source for the phone to detect the SSD?

My main reason to not buy an iPhone. I have over 100GB of all time pictures that I always want to have acces to, even offline (so cloud is not an option) and of course, getting more. I bought a Samsung SD card, of 256GB for 20€ additional to my 128GB, while Apple demands 300€ for their 512GB variants :(

Speed is way too slow tooo slow i am sorry you dont need ssd! Hdd is just as fast for iphone because iphone lightning port is the limiting factor i would recommend fast NAS drive instead

This works for files, but what about movies, music, TV shows and apps downloaded from the App Store/iTunes? I would like to watch Citizen Kane on the airplane or when the power goes out but I don't want to occupy 30GB of memory waiting for that day.
Also, seeing as the camera adapter has two USB-C slots, does one of them have to be used only for charging, or can I also use a DAC while using the SSD?
Do I have to update my iPhone before I use any of the ssd thing? My phone is maxed out 127gbs and it glitches to where If I delete 5 videos that are 4 mins long or more my storage doesn’t go down at all. I deleted photos and videos it still doesn’t go down it’s at 127 so i can’t update my phone I need at least 8 free gbs which I can’t get.. I want to buy a ssd transfer everything to it and delete everything on my phone to see if I can restore my storage and break the glitch so I can update my phone. Is there an ssd available to just use without updating phone for a case like mine? Thanks

Is it easy to have these videos and photos appear in your camera roll? We take a lot of photos and video for our work, and we need to offload them from the phone periodically. Unfortunately iCloud storage is best option. I know, no one wants to pay monthly.. but will you walk with wires in your pocket every time you want to watch movie? And look for mains to connect power? I don’t think so.

probably using the "files" app on the iphone. You'll see the external drive there to select --> cut --> paste
