    I am the co-designer of the game. Thank you for the "Seal of Approval" and all the nice words!:) We have tried to make the theme work, but apparently the theme didn't "come through" as you expected. But it's a euro, of course, so for us, the most important thing has been to make the game as tight as possible with hopefully new and interesting mechanisms, optimize the flow of the game, create a lot of interesting decisions, ensure escalating tension, and give the players a lot of powerful and satisfying turns:)

      Hello Eilif,
      I enjoyed the game very much. Little more theme integration or story would not have hurt. Modern circus theme maybe? But i am interestested in what is the meaning/origins of the name.

    • @eilifsvensson6388
      @eilifsvensson6388 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@h-p4185 Thank you! Working title was "Ringmaster". It was a little heavy/dry. We didn't want to have "Circus" in the title, because the game would have appeared much lighter than what it is. So, "The Magnificent" was chosen, since we wanted the performers to be in focus. So, you have the "The Magnificent Lungile", "The Magnificent Suhayl", etc. And we thought that was more original and mystical than "modern circus"-like titles, and we think that title fits the game quite well.

      Eilif Svensson The
      name is good, catchy. I think the ability to boost your dice by sticking to a color while paying the price is where the game has a true meaningful choise and the fact that you always can build a performance from scratch every round is wery dynamic. A good balance with strtegy vs. tactics.

    Surprised at the reception to this. We've played it four times with different groups and everyone has loved it. It's definitely more than the sum of it's parts.

  • @MrLonejericho

    I love the look of this game. All that darkness but then these shining colors. And I also like the theme, which there is more of than in many other Euros I've played. Dice are the workpower you need to either build up training grounds for your magician, or raise up tents for your shows to be held in or to actually run the shows, which are advertised with posters. In a game of magic shows there's no problem to find a meaning for the crystals. Those are magical artifacts which are needed for a show / improve a show / improve a workforce.
    The only thing I doubt right now is the replay volume of this as I dont see much of different ways to play the game or gather victory points. Right now I think that maybe every play will be same-ish even with different actions for each player because the way to play the game still remains the same. But thats just after 2 plays.

    I was really excited for the theme of this one, but watching Slickerdrips play through of it completely removed any desire I had to purchase it. I may give it a try if it shows up at a game day, but it's certainly not anything I'll seek out.

    Honestly this review makes me think that if you're looking for a new dice drafting game Trismegistus is the way to go over this one. Both games have well done, interesting mechanics but Trismegistus seems like it blends in its alchemy theme more smoothly, has better looking components and includes a great Automa solo mode.

    Watching a game played, hearing people's experiences about it, reading the rules and watching the how to play video, none of these can give you the accurate idea of how a game actually is. This is an excellent game with high replayability.

    In a way this game reminded me of Raja of the Ganges with the cool mix of mechanics. I think it really worked, the theme and style are interesting and set it apart from other games. Kudos to the designers for making something different and it plays really well. Quite the brain-burner as you try to maximize every move!

      @HALOX30 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cosmicdeb7576 true but Trickerion is a heavier game then The Magnificent and they have different mechanics as their core. The biggest mechanism is dice drafting, then tile laying. It's closer to Coimbra then to Trickerion in mechanism. Like Coimbra there is almost no theme. I am crossing my finger that it's not as boring as it seems from pretty much every review/runthrough/whatever. And yeah, it really feels like "let's put as much shit as possible to make it look like deep euro, slap on a theme and hope for the best". Maybe it will deliver in the gameplay department, but now I fall asleep just looking at the board.

    You obviously like the game design quite a bit, but your main focus is the theme, which is fair enough. I’m just a little surprised that you expect a really strong theme in a euro game. That being said, I think the theme here is incorporporated quite well into the ”package”, compared to many other euro games. You have training areas for the performers, you need to raise tents in order to hold the shows, you are marketing your shows with posters,
    etc. That being said, a eurogame is mostly about the mechanisms, and since the mechanisms are really important to make the game brilliant, it will often be at the expense of the theme. So, if you want a strong theme, I don’t think you
    should play euros. I have played this game several times now, and it’s a really really great, fresh and fascinating game!

    • @chuckm1961
      @chuckm1961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He never said he expected a strong theme in euro games. He said he found it had no theme. He described it as negative theme.
      You seem awfully defensive about this game.
      For me, I have higher expectations. I like euro games that have great mechanisms, but also have some theme and integrate them in an interesting way.
      That is in fact the trend over the past 10 years or so. Euro games are trending towards more theme, and our expectations for theme are higher than they used to be. Well, for many of us.

    • @johnwright4155
      @johnwright4155 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chuckm1961 Well, I like the game a lot, and I see the theme myself, so I was just a little surprised about the strong focus on the lack of it. But I agree that the theme could have been stronger. I'm a euro gamer, and to me, game experience is much more important than theme:)

      I love Euros. I also can enjoy a good theme when it works, it’s great. I don’t need it. But I also don’t think I’d tell anyone that if they want a theme don’t play euros. There’s plenty of amazing euros that have really strong thematic connections. They are not mutually exclusive.
      I also like my dry euros plenty but I tend to prefer them to be on the simple side. Theme makes it a bit easier to remember some of the more complex rules sometimes.
      I also am not always keen on AP inducing games, which was what killed this one for me. It was mostly related to moving the carts (or whatever they are). Forwards backwards, I can do x spaces with this X with that, but if I use this power to do this then I can blah blah. Should be fun, but the permutations are just a bit too similar and occasionally too hard to track and remember my evaluations etc. I kind of would just prefer to play something like Mage Knight if I’m puzzling out my turns that much.
      Still, good game. I would by no means say it isn’t good, just hard to compete with all the great games out there.

      Mike Slaybaugh I’m sorry, in what way did I suggest that I don’t know that? My post was about gently criticizing Tom for not including theme in the game explanation.
      I happen to be one of those euro gamers that cares more about theme. And so all that explanation about green, orange and yellow dice and other mechanics got me smiling and wondering, “I bet the game gives a thematic reason for all of these things Tom is describing without any reference to theme.”
      My collection includes about 100 pretty drably unthematic euros.
