Freddie said it: "I was changing lyrics every day, trying to get it as vicious as possible. I was a demon for a few days."

Freddie Mercury wrote this and dedicated it to Norman Sheffield, Queen's former manager and a co-owner of Trident Studios. Queen felt that Norman had not provided them with the support they needed, and so Mr. Sheffield and the band parted company prior to the recording of the album, A Night At The Opera.
After Queen had released their 3rd album, "Sheer Heart Attack" and had produced several hit singles, they were still only being paid £65.00 (about $80.00) each per week. Far from being rich rock stars, they were still just hard-working musicians who could barely pay their rent. Incidents such as Roger being told he couldn't hit the drums too hard as they supposedly "couldn't afford" new drumsticks or Triden Studios refusing to loan newly married John Deacon £10,000 for a down payment on a house just added fire to the rage forming in the band,. As Roger noted, "you see them (the management) running around in stretch limos and think 'hang on there's something not right here!'"
The split occurred under very acrimonious circumstances, and this song acted as something of a final word from the band. The lyrics form a harsh character portrait that outlines the band's full animosity towards their former acquaintance. Freddie was reportedly not a fan of the song after writing it, having felt it was too angry and bitter, but Brian encouraged him to complete it.

After they split from their manager John Deacon kept an eye on the band's finances. Even after he retired from Queen after Freddie died, John still manages their finances. BTW, John, his wife and their family still live in that house!

With 'Death on Two Legs' the lyric video is the ONLY way to go, it gives us the opportunity to view the pure venom and vitriol of Freddie's words.

The song "Flick of the Wrist" had been the warning. Still nothing changed, they made like 20 Pounds a week, Roger was told not to break any drum sticks, John needed a down payment on a small house and was told there is no money, after having sold tons of records and been on a tour around the world.-- What's wrong with that picture?

Yep, the perfect diss song for Queen’s former manager, Norman Sheffield. Fun fact - Sheffield drummed for Cliff Richard in a 1958 show at the London Palladium. Years later, Cliff Richard & Freddie would become good friends. Anyway, my favorite lyric “Was the fin on your back part of the deal? …SHARK!” 🦈🦈 In 2013 Sheffield released his personal memoirs titled “Life On Two Legs: Set The Record Straight”. Hmmm 🤔

This song is like getting hit with a frozen towel in the face, Freddie doesn't hold back. Thanks for reacting to this excellent rant of a song.

This one goes with the song Liar. Yikes! Freddie didn’t hold back. Queen’s managers were taking their money while the band struggled. Luckily the bass player John Deacon later looked after their finances but it was a bitter lesson to learn as you can hear.

The precursor to this one was "Flick of the Wrist" (written as a warning to other musicians about the dangers of not reading the contract carefully before signing it) it was released while still under contract to the management company both it, and this one, was aimed at.
The message (don't rip off Freddie, or Queen) should have been noted by the man who stole the bass line from "Under Pressure", just listen to the first couple of seconds and you will probably know who I mean (and try not to think, let alone sing the wrong lyrics).

The guy had nice cars and queen were barely eating. And he even told Roger not to break the drum sticks there expensive. Don’t underestimate Freddie and he will let you know if it’s wrong

Is that a real basketball or a grapefruit? Queens first four albums are full of masterpieces. I think Freddy got the last laugh. "You learn what you want to learn." Thank you.
