The manager wasn’t just stealing some of their money, he was draining them dry. He was rolling up in a new Rolls, while our boys were broke and living in one-room flats *after 3 successful albums and tours* !
The final straw was when John Deacon and his pregnant GF wanted to get married, and the management company refused to help him with a down payment on a modest little house. (Deaky is still married to the same gal, and they have 6 children).
Freddie was PISSED. This song is the result.

Britney Shearer : Damn right! Deaky was like the “little brother” Freddie never had, and he was very protective of him (being that he was the youngest of the group). Freddie helped draw Deaky out of his shell and encouraged his songwriting.

John Deacon got married and management would not even help with the downpayment on a house for him. They told Roger Taylor he had to be more careful with his drumsticks cause they couldnt buy new ones. Pretty much indicated they had no money.

The band had conquered the home crowds in the UK, then made a huge splash in Japan, and had come off their first headlining American tour, gaining ground and building a fanbase Stateside. Everything should have been rosy, but they were still living like paupers while the manager is tooling around London in a new Rolls Royce. Refusing to give John Deacon an advance for a home for he and his new wife was the straw that broke the camel's back. Brian May was reluctant at first to record the song since it oozed so much venom. However, since it was Freddie's baby, Brian and the others decided to let it stand as is. Therefore, this classic, the original diss track.
Now I haven't commented in a little while, but I still hope you get to "I'm In Love With My Car" in the near future. Featuring Roger taking the lead vocals, it had an interesting back story as well.

Great reaction. They were treated like cash cows. A diss and getting rage off their chests. Another song dedicated to the manager is "flick of the wrist" warning about how either entering to a business arrangement or any relationship is like signing a deal with the devil.

@@afreakaboucher1316 Sure. Queen's first manager was Norman Sheffield at trident studios. Though the band sold loads of records and went on many successful tours, they weren't being paid fairly if at all. They could hardly afford food and lodgings while the manager was buying fancy cars etc. Death on Two legs was the band's way of expressing their anger. A previous song "Flick of the wrist" is considered another expression of anger at Sheffield because, looking back, when they signed the contract with a "flick of the wrist", it was like signing a deal with the devil figuratively speaking. Does that make better sense?

I’m a huge Queen fan. A few years ago I noticed a colleague from work in the canteen drinking from a mug with Queen on it. I said “is that early Queen? I love Queen!”. And he said...
“Yes, my brother used to manage them...”
“Not the one they wrote Death on two Legs about???”
    “Yup” he replied.
I was floored. So I said...
“Thank him from me because that song is awesome!”
    😂😂😂

(And yup my colleague is an *old* guy.... Couldn’t believe I’d worked with him for years having no clue... he’s probably retired by now. I love that he was drinking from a mug with their faces on it. I wish I’d probed him further. At that time he said his brother was writing s book called Life on Two Legs. Not sure it was ever published but it sure made me laugh. )

Queen wasn't pissed off at a 'manager' they were pissed at the production company - Trident - that they'd signed with in 1973 for their first couple of albums. They were living like paupers because the company took their huge bit off the top and were literally driving around in Rolls Royces and grabbing all the money. Now, this wasn't really illegal since they were under contract, but they did get out of that contract and Queen was then signed exclusively with EMI - no middle man like Trident. Also, there is no video for this song because 'music videos' didn't really exist at that time. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video was the first of its kind - and they only made it because they would be touring and couldn't appear 'live' on Top of the Pops - and since TOTP only allowed lip syncing anyway - which they really hated - sending a video was a quick way to solve their problem and it could be played many times. This was years before MTV took up that idea and ran with it - inspired by Queen. I've listened/been a fan of Queen since 1975 and was around for all this - Queen cannot be surpassed in so many areas.

Everything you read is true, and that moron did nothing but give himself away by suing them, LOL!
If you keep researching, you'll find out to what extent he was screwing the band. There's another song previous to this one I recommend you to check out. It was written when they still were under that guy's contract. It's called "Flick Of The Wrist", and it's also dedicated to him. Leave it to Freddie to "gently" tell you how much he loves and appreciates you :P
It was actually easy to find out what was going on. The band wasn't seeing a penny. Literally. They were in debt because they had to pay the people who were working for them in the concerts, and that asshole kept telling them lies about the money they were actually making (because he was keeping it all). What made them explode though was what he did to Deaky (the bass player). He asked him for a loan to buy a modest house to marry his girlfriend and current wife and he received a plain no. That's when all of them got furious (they really felt like brothers, if you didn't know it). That guy bought a Rolls Royce with the money he was making out of them. Enough was enough. They found John Reid who paid the moron to release Queen from their contract, and that's when Freddie wrote this song. One of my favorite Queen songs, actually!
    Thank you very much!!

I think it took a bit for them to realize the depth and breath of the screwing they were taking. Roger kind of blew the lid off the whole situation by saying hey if we aren’t making any money on our records then how come so and so is driving a new Rolls ? There’s no mincing words with Freddie......reminds me of the movie A Knights Tale when Jeffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany) says “ I will eviscerate you in fiction....I was naked for a day but YOU will be naked for eternity !” 😜😜😂Freddie just musically “flipped the bird” at his former Record Company and Manager !!!!!! When you play the full album one song bleeds into another. So what seems like an ending is only the beginning to another song......

They were famous at the time but not that famous. They had released three albums and the third one had Killer Queen in it, but the real turning point was going to be their fourth album, A Night at the Opera which contained Bohemian Rhapsody and, of course, Death On Two Legs.

  • @aliceinbookland2137
    @aliceinbookland2137 5 ปีที่แล้ว

He did sue for defamation of character, which revealed to the public who this song was about. He really didn’t think that through. However, he was their first manager, so they were small fry that turned into an unexpected windfall for him and he thought he could get away with taking all the revenue from the first 3 albums-they never actually got the money back but they voided their contract and this album-which contained Bohemian Rhapsody-was with a new label. If you like the blunt lyrics and catchy tune, check out the hilariously upbeat “Don’t Try Suicide” and you’ll probably choke on your spit laughing at how brutal it is for such a fun sounding song.

Queen were very careful. The song's full name is Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...) but they never, ever attached a name to it or even hinted who it was about. But Norman Sheffield knew IMMEDIATELY as soon as he heard it, and tried to sue Queen...and of course the court records were public domain...so by suing Queen he acknowledged that he was the one the song was about!
I love this song because the insults are so incredibly clever. "a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride" might be one of my favourite lyrics of all time. He doesn't just savage him or diss him, Freddie completely eviscerates him!

Technically the Management company did not steal from the band, but the way the contract was written they could pay the band only as much as they wanted to, while at the same time taking all the royalties.
As an indication of how the management behaved, at one point they told Roger to stop breaking drumsticks because they couldn't afford to replace them, while living in virtual mansions and driving expensive cars.

Sorry to be a flea in the ointment here, but going forward it may be an idea to play the song/video, then analyse and react afterwards?? You spent just over two minutes waffling on about the ex managers career after just the first line of the song, the interest wained after that!! ....Sorry!!
