The fact that this song exist is why I loved Queen. They did everything. Never knew what was coming next....

Love this unique song. There are many theatrical songs, Black Queen, white Queen , In the lap of the gods. We Queen fans love it.
Interesting note about that acapella moment; In 1975, panning delay like that did not exist! Being able to create 3 isolated 100% canon delays like that was not considered possible with the technology of the time. Remember, they had only tape machines and analog processors back then to work with. What they had to do was they took 3 different tape machines and strung the tape through all three, stabilised across lamp posts and chairs, fine-measured to get the right distance, and then recorded Freddie's vocals going into all three machines at once, so he can hear it and keep in time with himself.
Can't imagine how much time, effort, and planning went into perfecting that sound, and that is simply ONE of the many studio tricks that Queen pulled off on this record!

One of my favorite Queen songs of all time. I bought this album when it came out. I’m singing along (I’m a singer), haven’t heard this in years and remember the entire song like it was yesterday.

This song make my jaws drops to the floor when first time hear in 1985 when I was kid. One of my favorite Queen song ever.
Death on Two Legs from A Night at the Opera is my favorite. Great lyrics and masterpiece of music. Playing the whole album is the way to go!
I saw a reaction to Death on Two Legs where they used a live version. The song sounded awful - no orchestral intro, meh vocals, not even the full song - and of course they didn't like it. Made me ☹.

One of the most powerful statements that Freddie ever sang. I always picture a furious deity screaming that at the terrified human race, just as they're obliterated once and for all.
On the vinyl album the outro transitions right into the next song, "Love of My Life". Brian May said that Freddy insisted that there be a harp played in the song, so Brian taught himself how to play harp.
Try March of the Black Queen from Queen 2, that's very multi layered. By the way, this song was written by Brian May. Remember there were no computers in 1975 so all the vocals in the choral section had to be added separately. The Japanese sounding instrument is a Koto
Guitarist Brian May wrote this song after a dream he had about the Great Flood. Hence, the nods to Noah & the Ark, the white dove 🕊️ “two by two my human zoo” 🐅🐘🦓🐆 “outta the rain” ☔️💦🌊 the wiseman (the madman). Brian was quite sick with hepatitis at the time of his dream! 🥴

This is Queen's last foray into progressive music. Agreed that it's not a playlist song for most people, but it's a great song and when you're in the mood for something a little more complex, it's nice to check out every now and then.
Nah, A Day At The Races had some bits like The Millionaire Waltz and You Take My Breath Away, and then years later, they returned to that Proggy sound on A Kind Of Magic, The Miracle, and Innuendo, each one getting more Proggy as they go.
Definitely not their last, Innuendo was their last progressive rock song.
In 1976 I was 12...worked all summer for a clock radio. Didn't have money for headphones. Stuck my head between my speakers to get that panning effect.

I know it doesn’t fit into your format but music of this era by bands of this caliber really need to be experienced by listening to the entire album in one sitting. Imagine watching a movie one scene at a time, in the wrong order, waiting months between viewing the scenes. Kinda loses the effect, right? That being said, it was a fun reaction guys. The instrument at the beginning & end, is called a Toy Koto. ( Japanese ) Brian picked up / learned to play. While touring there, in the early 70s. Brian also sings the opening lines of the song. Fred Comes in singing...I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair. If you listen to more of the album tracks. ( especially the ones from the 70s ) their voices are interchanging throughout many songs. Finally. On each album through the 70s / early 80s. Brian & Roger sing lead on at least 1 song per album. Sometimes more. I suggest Good Company, Long Away, Tenement Funster, Sleeping on the Sidewalk, & 39. Album versions please. Brian had a habit of letting Fred sing everything live. While he sang backing vocals, & let his guitar do the talking. All but one of these songs feature Brian. I suppose because... I feel like everyone knows Roger is himself a vocal beast. While Brian doesn't share his bandmates vocal range. His tone is soft, sweet & warm ( On Queen albums ) As much of a powerhouse as Fred is. I wish Brian had more confidence. ( singing lead ) Some songs just fit him better. PS. If you want an absolute banger. One where his voice is not soft, or sweet. Try a song from his solo album. Called Resurrection. ( with Cozy Powell on drums ) It's a monster! It also would fit into the theme you are currently exploring.
Yes it was a toy version of a Japanese Koto - analogous to a plastic, toy version of a piano. This was literally a child's toy, but it sounds great when used on this song.
This album by Queen, "Night of The Opera" is Queen's Masterpiece album!!!! Flawless. This album made them one of the gods of Rock n' Roll..every song is great...Like "I'm in Love With My Car" and "The Prophet's Song"(which is a tribute to Native American's Culture) and "Beachside Rendevous" are just gem masterpieces!!!! I have the album and play it a lot!!! lol

You've gone from Queen Metal to Queen Progressive!! If there was ever any doubt on their prowess on vocal harmonies, this should be ALL the proof you need! AND how heavy they could get (particularly after the acapella section - Brian goes beast mode!!). Sure, this may not be everyone's cup of tea (especially if you're not a prog fan), but I have loved this track from first listen! It contains everything that Queen mastered.
I had the fortunate experience of seeing a group, called Classic Albums Live do ALL of A Night At The Opera live - note for note - and I think they had 6 guitarists, and no less than 4 vocalists on for this song. It was an epic and eye-opening, and served to make me appreciate this song (and album) all the more!
This song needs more than one listen it’s an epic song took me ages to warm to it absolutely love it now ❤ Queen were an albums band in their earlier albums the songs tended to run seamlessly into one another this goes into Love of My Life x
Of course it’s operatic, it’s a Night at the Opera, the album that gave us Bohemian Rhapsody.
Love this song! So different. Checkaroo on the "oriental instrument" -- it's a koto, played by the inestimable Brian May. The "a capella" part is done with a relay -- Freddy was singing harmony with himself in real time. This effect is also used on "Brighton Rock" but there it's on the guitar instead of vocals.
Songs like this are why we had quadraphonic stereos in the 70s ! And lots of weed of course...

Let’s hear it for Brian May’s guitar work all over this song apart from the Freddie multi-part vocals being an exercise in indulgence at times. The classic May unique guitar tones being instantly recognizable is a characteristic that all legendary guitarists share. May is curiously underrated while still being considered a legend especially by fellow guitarists and musicians in general.
Love this song! Styx had a less well known song of a similar bent in “Castle Walls”
Only on in the 70's would a record label putting that much $$ behind an album , (tour. advertising etc ) would let this level of experimentation fly.

I got this for my 10th birthday in 1974, after a steady musical diet of AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Status Quo. The whole album is amazing and was on my turntable for months. It taught me to give a chance to something different. First track , Death On Two Legs is Freddy at his most savage lyrically.

Sorry, but both you and the reactors got the date wrong. A Night At The Opera was released on November 21st 1975! I was too young to go see them when they toured Australia on the A Night At The Opera tour in April 1976 unfortunately, but I did later get to meet Freddie, Brian and Roger.

It is not more complex then Bohemian Rhapsody people are just more used to Bohemian Rhapsody.
I did get this when it was 1st released. As I did then, even now still prefer this to Bohemian.

Death on. Two Legs is a must from this album. It's a fierce diss to their management who were taking all the money the band made and the members of the band were being paid a tiny wage. Epic song

I'm a bass player, and usually point out John Deacon's great lines, but this one, Roger's drumming is the stand out. Oh, and the Asian instrument is is a toy koto. Love this track, I have since I heard it in 1976.
A fantastic album from start to finish! The technology did not exist to record this track in 1975, so they invented it! The first album to meld pop and opera!

I bought A Night at the Opera on 8-track when I was in high school. I played it nonstop for weeks. I knew every word of every song. Fast forward to last fall, when I found the album on TH-cam. Guess what? I may not remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I still know every word of every song on that album!

[Edit] Yes, I've been to several operas. Never felt the urge to kill myself, but felt the urge to slap my ex-husband for laughing out loud at the death scene in La Traviatta! Indeed, opera is not for everyone.....
Brian said that this song literally came to him in a dream. Brian brought the idea for the canon effect (the repeat effect) into the studio and Freddie loved it and took it to another level. I think perhaps he took it a little too far, but this song is a musical masterpiece with so many great technical elements. This is a song that musicians are amazed by and the rest of us kind of sit back and go, huh? After listening to it several times, it has actually become one of my favorite Queen songs. This song was intended by the band to be Brian's Bohemian Rhapsody but it never really took off. Perhaps it was just to technical for the listeners at the time or maybe just something they were not expecting from Queen. Thank you for your reactions.
Released in November, 1975. Besides Bohemian Rhapsody, the other hit on this album is “You’re My Best Friend” which I’m sure at least one of you know. My personal fave is “Death On Two Legs”. If I know you guys I think you’ll definitely like that one!

My favourite track from the album, but as a drummer, a pleasure to play. The most difficult on the album is “Sweet Lady”, because of the time signature. Love all of their stuff!
That's not 5 Freddies. That's just 1 Freddie with a delay on his mic for the first part of it. His pitch was that spot on.

For me this song is one of the most epic and intense story songs out there that I've heard, on every one of my playlists. Its odd to me how y'all dont seeem to take it seriously, but I usually have to close my eyes and immerse myself into it and i feel it in my soul

Freddie IS the greatest! As their singer he had to sing what was chosen for the album. All voted for the songs making the album. Brian thought this should have been the single - not BohemianRhap. First hearing, it's supposedly telling a Native American story. hmmm, Sounds more Noah's ark inspired to me. It's totally Brian's creation. Freddie needs an award for his work. (Note:I didn't get out of White Queen what folks say.) The Prophet's Song is in the Grammy Hall of Fame?????

Great suggestion from the people. I became a huge Queen fan back in the day when 'The Game' was released. Soon after, I got a hold of the vinyl record of 'A Night at the Opera' and (like so many others) Bohemian Rhapsody was my favourite of that record. However, it suffered over the years from being overplayed such that I don't really need to hear it again. Prophet's Song (on the other hand) was a deep cut that I liked and grew to love more and more, such that it became my favourite Queen song. So heavy, so proggy, so fantastic. I especially like the section after the cappella where the guitar takes over...
Whenever you feel this progressive rock need again - try Genesis " suppers ready" 20 minutes of craziness like this

Great production here. For a seventies album this is ridiculous. Form me the most intersting and best song from the album. And I know Bohemian Rhapsody is on there too. The Night at the opera album goes all the way from prog to symphonic and that just makes it great. Thanks for reacting. Rock on guys. 🤘🤘

Brian was already using delay tapes to harmonize with himself and wondered what would happen if he put Freddie in a studio harmonizing with himself using the delay tapes and this was the result . Considering what little technology they had at the time, what Queen produced was pretty incredible. There is a documentary with Roy Thomas Baker about how him and Brian put this together.

The oriental instrument you hear at the beginning and end of the song is a toy Koto that Brian May bought while on tour in Japan and tuned it to get the necessary notes to accompany the acoustic guitar. The "a cappella" section was created to simulate on Freddie's vocals the same delay effect used by May in some guitar solos .

It's the only album I own by Queen - because of these kind of songs. I'd only wish "Killer Queen" would have been on this album, instead of "I'm In Love With My Car", then it would have been perfect.

My primary school best's friend loved Queen, got it on his 10th birthday, and we loved it to... death (on two legs). We did not have any headphones, just a simple cheap gramophone player, but darn, we loved it. This one, Death On Two Legs, and, of course, Bohemian Rhapsody.
This song is 3 dimensional you are hearing it in only 2, It is designed to be heard in quadraphonic stereo using 4 separate quadrants. sound comes and moves front to back, side to side, and corner to corner with a fifth that can arc over or hover above you, with the right stereo equipment the voices and instruments swirl around you from every direction. The band The Cars used this in a lot of their songs. You may not like the song but the effect is captivating. Sadly today the home theater sound looses ability to circle around the listener or shoot over head or fall on top of your head. Home theater stereo is all about making a small space feel big.
I can hear both Roger and Brian in that acapella mid section. Brian has a fairly bright coice, and Roger was the one who could hit all the high notes - even at their live concerts.
Queen worked extremely hard on getting every little detail right, The term "good enough" never existed in their vocabulary - not even at live concerts.
My friend Mike used to refer to this era of queen as "Cape Rock." I stole this record (Night at the Opera) and it's mate album (Day at the Races) from my sister when I was 8 and I was like.....what....the.....FUCK Is THIS??? I was hooked forever.

If you have ever seen the advert for Cougar Bourbon, where the mind of the dude ordering drinks is so completely stunned into catatonic numbness by the size of the serving girl's chest, that all he can say is "5 Cougars please" as his brain goes into shutdown/reset mode - 11:25 of this reaction is pretty much the same, except multiplied by 3.
Freddie loved Opera and Ballet. He sang with Monserratt Caballie and the song was the Barcelona Olympics song. Its absolutely fabulous, both singers at the top of their game.
If you've never been to the opera, you have no idea of what you're missing out. Live orchestral music is POWERFUL. And no need for amps!
I've never been to see an opera but as I really love the whole Barcelona album Freddie did with Montserrat it makes me want to discover more about operas.
@@anima6780 some can be boring but most of them are really good. You'll need to follow the story by reading it as it's being played or you'll miss a lot or might find it less interesting.
As an introduction, start with something from Verdi. You can't go wrong with that. But a recording will never beat a live performance (but it's bloody expensive!!!!).

I always love when people react to "Bohemian Rhapsody" and they're like "wow, that's crazy!" and I'm like, "lol, it's not even the craziest song on the album!" I don't think this is a song you pull out randomly, but when you listen to the album, it's great to have it in there.
People underrate Brian May as a songwriter. A whole LOT of Queen's best songs are his, from "Keep Yourself Alive" to "Brighton Rock" and "Now I'm Here" and "39" and "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together)" and of course the likes of "We Will Rock You" and "Fat-Bottomed Girls". Keep exploring and you'll find quite a bit of playlist material.
