Could use blocks of clay or maybe layers of styrofoam sheets to test the difference between the top strike and point strike maybe even compare it to a small hammer ore mace

That could definitely work. I especially like the clay idea. Thanks for the suggestion!

I took Tavernbrawler to be able to use my shield as a main weapon, especially for grappling. Lot of RP potential for a goliath.

A lot of illustrations from the 12 and 13th century show shields that only have the guige and the strap for the hand, which in some ones that work as comic panels depict men at arms losing the shield (which remains hanging on the side) so they could use both hands on the sword.
Based on that, in the video's scenario I'd probable use it defensively until I can grapple and hopefully disarm someone. If all goes well I'll take his weapon and carry on. surviving is priority #1, then comes finding my expensive sword back.

Interesting video. Haven't seen any other medievalist mention this on TH-cam so far. And looking rather tough in this video I must say. Might be the beard but you look buff too. Good job!

Instantly in love with this channel - and you've beat me to this topic by about a month - love it!
I'll delay my video on this out of respect, again kudos you've covered a lot of good in this one!
A quick note on heater shields, that's not what they were called at the time, 'heater shield' is a bit more of a modern term, but everything else - omg my dude I'm staying tuned!
Also heater shields are amazing, I use one at training all the time.

I did not realize the heater shield is actually small, i always thought it was twice the size.
Perhaps i should stop comparing it to rpg shields and fantasy movies. 😅
Yeah, shields has always been underrated as a viable weapon.

    • @reltihfloda7210

You might be thinking of kite shields like the ones the Normans and early crusaders had. There's also hybrids that have more of a heater shield shape but size of kite shields.

The title of this video implies that your sword is your main weapon. It isn't. It's your BACKUP weapon. You should change the title to something like "Your Shield Is Just As Dangerous As Your Sword."

Correction: some knights with full plate armour did not have shields but they kept being used by many infantrymen

    • @MattsGreatHall
      @MattsGreatHall  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nice fact-checking. I suppose you mean "infantrymen not wearing full plate"? Because full plate negated the need for heater shields in battle. I reviewed a number of sources that I can point you to that state that heater shields were no longer used on the battlefield by the mid-fourteenth century. There are always exceptions to broad generalizations, but I do research my topics before making a video. Thanks for your comment.

    • @gaelmichaud8766

It is a pleasure, and I think fighting with just your shield seems like a desperate technique, in fhis case, I would carry a dagger of some sort. But yes, striking with your shield is a viable tactic, if you are moron enough or just unlucky to lose your sidearm (sword) and your spear or pike or bow or whatever.
