    I very much appreciate Nate showing that you're meant to wear soft cloth, padding, mail, and maybe more padding BEFORE the helmet. Every game in existence making you craft armor out of just metal bars with no lining or padding, that's just illogical - which always brings me to the only sensible piece of armor in World of Warcraft, some metal chestplate that takes a leather chestpiece in its crafting.

      In GW2 all heavy armour sets use cloth padding during the crafting process. Casing and padding are crafted separately, then put together to craft the armour piece. The end result is rarely historically accurate or even believable though, but fantasy MMORPGs...

    I feel that if you account for the fact that adventurers basically *live* in their armor, the Kettle Helm makes a *lot* of sense. If you put your helmet on when you get up in the morning and don't take it off until you go to bed at night, comfort and convenience become very important.

      Depends on the time period you set your adventurers in. If you set it in the high middle ages then aye!!! It might even be the most affordable surpassed only by the cervelliere.

    • @samuelstern4113
      @samuelstern4113 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      I mean that makes some sense, but helmets, even modern ballistic helmets, are just uncomfortable to wear, even the best ones. For most people, unless they're expecting to be attacked, they'll put their helmet somewhere more comfortable, like on a pack or on a belt, etc. In reality, on a long journey it's unlikely you'd be wearing your helmet the whole time, so a kettle helm would probably be even better as the shape lends itself quite nicely to storage on a pack more easily than some of the other more odd shapes.

    For a fantasy adventure group, field of view and ease of communication are going to be at a premium. Bear in mind, these are small teams of individual specialists, not formations of soldiers, and they routinely fight with a fair degree of separation from each other, frequently against multiple opponents. There isn’t a fixed chain of command typically, either, so staying coordinated is crucial given they often have little or no idea what they will be fighting against next until the fighting starts.

For adventuring it just has so much utility not just as a helmet but as a proper hat, and it is most likely the easiest on the coin purse considering how little work really needs to go into that, especially compared to the full helms with visors or articulation and such.

      And something brought up by another TH-camr is that you're not going to be in full armour the whole time. If you're marching, you don't want to be wearing your war armour, that's with the rest of your gear. What you want is something so that if you do get attacked on the road, you're not completely unarmoured, and that is where the kettle helmet excels - you could comfortably wear it all day every day, yet it offers a very good amount of protection, and if you know you're about to be in combat, you can switch to your better helmet

      Back when I was in the US Army, we had the ACH, which is little more than an iterated Stahlhelm with modern materials. Had seen plenty of training aides showing the actual battle damage to them, but the padding for them was just a selection of velcro shaped pads. When I was in training, we had a few of the older K-pots with rigging instead, and always though it would be nifty if we could make a modern helmet with the protective qualities and general design of the ACH but with the rigging of the older models. I know we wouldn't because of the fact that it would have to be so much bigger...

    • @KimRobertson
      @KimRobertson 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The suspension rig in those helmets is comfortable but should still be used with padding at least to the sides. The suspension asorbs shock from downward strikes. Side strikes have little or no absorsion. In a bscinet with a chain aventail, this weight of the chain serves to absorb some sideways momentum and protect your neck from wiplash. One topic that these guys should have covered with more clarity is that heavy helmets have higher innate inertia meaning that they take much more energy to move and so protect you from neck injury. If you are larping then go for a light helm. If you are fighting with Buhurt or other full speed full contact style then absorbing energy from all directions is very important.

    I love how in depth you guys went on this. Most people don't consider breathing, sight, and hearing as being important. They just want max protection, but not having your full senses and being able to breath easy is just as important.

    A fun theory that has been in the back of my mind is that many Celtic helmets actually did have wings and many Viking helmets did have horns, but they were not literal wings and horns. In a some ways the cheek guards look like/resemble flapping wings to a common person. Similar to the nasile guard, same may have thought they looked a lot like a horn or tusk. I wander if there are any historical records that would suggest that. Haha if true, that Roman ridge helmet is both winged and horned! Best of both worlds!

    Not only do I LOVE the little skits and just seeing how these guys have fun together, but the amount of trust they have in each other is amazing to see. I have a group I practice with weekly with bottle cutting and such and we're huge on blade safety. To have someone even weakly swing a blunt at your helmet requires serious trust in the other person to do safely. And to be the one swinging at your friend? To me that's even harder. You have to have faith in them, as well as yourself. Seeing them not only have fun, but trust each other this much? Truly impressive and it just adds to my already over the top hype for the direction this channel is taking. Damn good adventure, grateful to be here for it!

    Kettle helm with a candlestick affixed ontop. For delving into unlit caves and tombs, while still being able to wield an armament in/with both hands. Or, a helmet that has the "light" cantrip cast on it works too.
    Atleast if nothing else, the other adventurers will be able to see where their tank "Headlamps McGee" has gone.

    The kettle helm and barbute were two helmets I wanted to see covered in this episode and I was so happy to see them both being talked about. The kettle helm bc it is my favorite helm bc of its similarity to our modern combat helmets (sort of) and it’s practical sun protection since I am prone to sunburn. The barbute bc it’s the helm that the Mandalorian helmets are designed after with the T-shaped opening. Loved it guys!

    Something I loved about the siege of helms deep, with all the uruk-hai stood at the wall, was their breath vapour shooting out of the bottom of the helmets. It was great visual language, it made them look pumped up and mean. With those helmets I can just imagine standing on the battlefield early on a foggy autumn/winter English morning, cavalry and knights billowing vapour into the air waiting for the battle to begin.

    I love the Hounskull and German Sallet helmets. To me they look absolutely fierce, and the full plate with all the decorations and ridges that are usually associated with Sallet helmets are just wonderful. I do enjoy that the Brits looking for a helmet for their doughboys in WW1 looked at the Kettle helmet and thought, "yeah this will work" and it absolutely did. As for my helmet pick if I were an adventurer? If I had lived my life as a boy, teen, and adult learning to fight in armor and all the intricacies that entails then I'd definitely go for the Hounskull. If I was a merc previously or just some dude I'd pick the kettle and call it a day. Great video though, I learned ALOT.

    • @coopercummings8370
      @coopercummings8370 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, in my opinion it is a strong contender for the best helmet for an adventurer, at least if they have more money, particularly when paired with an articulated bevor. If they need visibility and breath ability they could raise the visor, tilt the helm back, and lower the bevor, and the face would be completely open, but it still offers excellent protection to the back of the neck and sides of the helm, and at any time if they feel additional protection is needed they could very rapidly raise the bevor, tilt the helm and lower the visor, and they can do any combination of tilted helm, raised visor, and lowered bevor as needed.

    • @Xener09
      @Xener09 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta hard disagree, the Sallet with the bevor that covers your whole mouth and nose, with nothing more than a slit for vision has got to be the worst helmet for adventuring. You open yourself to ambushes with how limiting it is for visibility, and it's not quick and efficient to add/remove the face coverage. A simple Bascinet is probably the best. You have tons of options for face masks (pig face, klappvisor, nasal, cross and more) they can be swung open and quickly shut when needed, or fully removed.
      Most of this comes from HMB experience, but having fought in both helms, I HATED the sallet and its one of the least popular in the sport.
      It excels in protection which is why it was prominent in history but its a big trade off, they have terrible breathing and terrible vision. (when combined with the bevor) but without the bevor your throat is exposed. The armet has most of the same features as the salet but it allows instant flip up of your vision AND breathing when needed. You can only flip the vision of a Sallet in mid combat. the bevor takes time to equip.

    @jolioding_2253 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I really like the options of the sallet, being able to choose if you want your entire head covered in steel or leave parts open to breathe better if you're not fighting something that is able to stab.
    also i like the sallet because its german translation is Schaller and another meaning for that word is a loud banging noise/ intense feeling after being struck
