Based on QNAP's Flexible Volume Architecture, the Storage Manager provides a secure, flexible and comprehensive approach to manage data on your NAS and offers a number of great features such as storage pools, multiple RAID groups, thin-provisioned volumes, space reclamation, and online capacity expansion. These features can effectively protect your storage system and your valuable data.
Static Volumes are created directly on a RAID group. They give the best performance for random file access (up to 20% faster than other disk volumes). This option is suitable for creating high-performance storage spaces for file sharing or online collaboration.
Thick Volumes are created from pre-allocated storage pool space. The capacity is reserved and expandable. This option is suitable for general usage.
Thin Volumes can be created with more space than the usable storage capacity, and take physical space from the storage pool only as data is written to the volume. Thin provisioning maximizes storage utilization and is useful for dynamic storage spaces and limited storage shared by multiple users.
Besides storing data, the volume can be utilized as an iSCSI LUN. The block-level iSCSI LUN provides less overhead which improves the overall read/write performance. It also supports virtualization applications (such as VAAI thin provisioning and storage reclaim and Microsoft® ODX) as an ideal choice for iSCSI storage solution.

Very helpful webinar, as was the first one on NAS set-up. These QNAP NASs are quite easy to set-up even by non-IT professionals and they provide excellent protection of vital data. I'd recommend these products without any reservation. I use their NASs for storing the video files on my channel.

I've had my NAS for over 2 years now and with all the lockdowns, i've been digging into it more and more, setting up Pi-Hole, QVR and more. I'm finding these seminars very useful in fine tuning my setup using things like snapshots, etc. Thank you very much for all these! QTS is much more powerful than I thought it was going to be when buying it >2 years ago.

@@QNAPUK Your welcome. I have a question about Storage Snapshots. At the moment, I have it enabled for my Storage Pool 1, which has just a single DataVolume. Inside this, I have several different folders for photos, Plex, doc, etc. Is there a way to exclude snapshots being generated for any of these folders?

I've used a Synology for many years and recently decided to make the switch. Picked up a 4-bay QNAP last week and I'm still learning how to configure it correctly. These webinars are long but super helpful. It makes my transition from Synology to QNAP a little easier. After watching this it made me wonder if it is possible to remove one drive from a RAID 5 storage pool? I currently have all 4 drives in one RAID 5 pool but the SSD caching seems really cool so I was thinking I could one day replace 3 drives with larger ones (and make them one RAID 5 pool) and the 4th one with an SSD for caching. Thank you.

Hi ! How can I know or how can I calculate the amount of GB/TB has to got the LUN volume?. Thanks for the video

This is my first NAS and I wonder, do I need snapshots if I use RAID1?

I can't get Cache acceleration to work. I have a 500GB Ironwold Pro SSD in Bay 1, its been formatted and a volume created (is that the issue), when I choose Cache Acceleration and then it shows the list of drives, I see it but it's greyed out. Is it only PCIe SSD's that can be Cache drives? I'm using the QNAP TVS-663.

Great video. I do have one question, I understand the performance hit while snapshots are being taken, however, is there a performance hit during the idle time when you are not taking snapshots such as in-between schedules?

Hi Is there an update to this video as my TS-h886 version h.5.0.0.2022 shows different settings for cache Acceleration. I have 100 TB of storage what size SSD do i require?

Excellent video. Question regarding the use of storage pools and the system volume. In one QNAP Video, I saw that storage pool 1 was setup with a single volume for system and then storage pool 2 was setup for all additional volumes. On this video, all volumes are configured under storage pool 1. Which is the preferred configuration for QNAP and why?

@@QNAPUK Thanks, that makes sense. I specifically work with QTS based QNAP NAS devices, so was not thinking about other QNAP Operating Systems and how they might function. To speed up the volume scan after a crash or when an event is detected, I typically try to keep the system files in their own volume (sysvol) and then create a data volume for all the other files. This way, I can expand either volume based on growth without effecting the other volumes. Appreciate the quick response.

Is it worth SSD caching to run plex?

I am setting up a new TS-873A and I want to use two NVME SSDs in the internal NVME bays with Qtier to tier with 8 SATA Drives in the other 8 bays. But Qnap website has this guidance on the TS-873A web page. "4. It is recommended to create an SSD RAID with at least two SSDs for the QuTS hero system drive to attain optimal system performance." That makes perfect sense to have system on fast SSDs. So if I first setup my 8 SATA drives the "System Drive" will be assigned to that slow SATA spinning drive pool. But if I setup an SSD Pool with two NVME SSDs in Raid 1 as my first pool I then can't use it with Qtier? Am I missing something? Do I just setup first pool of 8 SATA Spinners and just count on Qtier to move "System" files to the faster SSD Tier?

@@QNAPUK So I am going to use Hero so now I would dedicate the SSD RAID 1 pair to caching instead. So I need expansion card with another SSD RAID 1 in order to install system on SDDs and Cache the main pool. My drives arrive soon from Amazon so I am trying to figure out best practices to setup this unit and start loading it with data. I want to avoid mistakes that will require starting over. Thanks again.
