    My thing with SJM is people act like she’s doing something new when in reality she’s just taken troupes that have already existed in anime, movies, kdramas and even telenovelas and repackaged them for her audience. The reuse of troupes isn’t bad but the fact that people think she’s doing something new is what confuses me😂😂😂😂 I’d really be interested to know why SJM is such a popular author. Her books are okay but they get more credit than they deserve. I do appreciate that she can actually have a plot in her books unlike someone (From Blood and Ash I’m looking at you👀)

    • @natesamadhi33
      @natesamadhi33 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I imagine the main people who genuinely love her books are people who dont read much of anything else, so they wouldnt know much about other writers who already did these tropes (which is probably why SJM gets away with such bad writing, because her core-audience just hasn't been exposed to much good writing)

    • @nerdgirl8978
      @nerdgirl8978 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I think she is average too. I do like her ACOTAR-Series quite a lot though (except the first book), (and I felt a bit forced to read this too because of the cross over and got disappointed by the messy and a little bit flat plot in CC3 especially.)
      I'm also surprised that so many see her books as very smuty/spicy. To me, they are the level of a normal adult romance book, and the spicy scenes are a bit repetitive and are definitely not that graphic/explicit with the flowery descriptions. But people talk about them as if they were erotica.😂
      Also, all her books have sooooo much Sailor Moon in them. (And after some googling I found out that she is actually a big fan). I actually like it for some strange reason even though it's quite obvious. Cresent City with Bryce and the star inside her, Throne of glass with all the name similarities and character descriptions. ACOTAR with Amarantha looking like Queen Beryl and then the plot with the Culdron. 😅
      I like her books for what they are, but I definitely think she is over hyped when it comes to the quality of the writing.

    I have not read this book but I understand Jess' frustration. For example, wouldn't specially-shaped fey headphones just be regular headphones in a world full of magical creatures?? And WHY would magical beings not have their own magical inventions that cater to their own abilities instead of our lame human shit! Sure, it's in an urban city so not forest-based, I get where she was going but where was the unique technology that comes with developed, city-based, fantasy worlds??? And this is where I agree that this is lazy writing. Where's the innovation? Where's the imaginative, unique, fantastical stuff that should be in a fantasy world?? So you create a metropolitan city filled with (almost) every fantastical being but as a writer you do not take advantage of letting your imagination run wild and create some cool stuff? Sorely disappointing. But, they have cellphones and headphones cause it's in an urban city, and busty redheads and brooding men with wings cause that's what her fans like and what she seems to fantasize herself?? But that's about it. I think the reason why it's rated so highly is because the people who would dislike it are done reading her work. They know what to expect, they know they won't like it and they don't even care to criticise it anymore. Clearly only her fans are rating it cause nobody else is bothering to read it.

    Her penchant to completely change characters personalities to fit her favorite tropes pisses me off.
    I get to liking her characters then she turns them into asshats. Screw that noise… 💔

    Watched this just for the well deserved rant. This was my first SJM book. The only thing that.made this series bearable is buddy reading it with 2 other family members.
    But it has so many issues. I hate the ambiguous descriptions of skin tone. I think the author must have received criticism about not having people of color so she made them "golden" or "light brown".
    About the use of the word "Hel". That's from Norse mythology. She is a goddess of the underworld. Which is NOT the same as the Christian Hell so I hated the way she substituted one word for another when they are not the same. She just picked mythological creatures from a lot of mythologies and threw them in the pot and didn't respect the cultures she took them from.
    You can't call a being an "angel" which has a real world analog but never explain what they are in your universe. Many authors have done it by simply saying people saw these beings and saw them as divine.
    The world building was terrible. What is this world? I think at some point she describes them eating Indian food? How? How is the food from that culture in this world? Is this Earth? Or is it just lazy world building?
    I don't get the SJM hype.

    Ahahaha I enjoyed Crunchwrap Supreme City but I read it at just the right time (super mood reader). This was hilarious tho. My thought is that Heinz Ketchup is a tanned white. Those are the vibes I'm getting. And as a fellow southerner I don't think I can look at their wings the same way 🤣💀💀 roaches are NOT IT

    Both SJM and Cassandra Clare should stop writing long books. Most of the plot feels like filler

    I didn't even get to 100 pages. I was irritated and bored. Gladly gave it to Goodwill. I don't know what people like about that book. It honestly made me feel stupid for wasting time and brain cells on trash writing.

    Why does everything I hear sound like a low budget early 80s fantasy /Sci-fi mash up movie 👀🤔 the names, the setting, the yuppie protagonists ... The dancing it out.
