To this day, I don't understand why they did that. Granted, they did go to the AFC championship game the next year.
On borrowed talent, chargers started falling apart once Marty left because he was an amazing team builder. You see it very often a coach having a great first year, just because his first year is usually a result of the previous coach.
Big baller two games for a combined 6 points. They loss two games by a total of 1 fuckin’ td and 1 game went into OT. And Marlon Fucker McCree fucked up and fumbled. FUCK!!!!
They lost a home playoff game with Marty, 14-2 got them nowhere

Ladanian Tomlinson was the greatest running back of the 2000s and he had to share carries with Micheal trurner and Darren sproles. People forget how great this guy was because of how bad SAN Diego treated him with bad coaching and a bad organization around him.

Jason Juelg and Jimmy Johnson was only in Miami for a few seasons, he wasn’t there long enough to build anything. Not to mention those teams really weren’t that talented, Dan Marino was at the end of his career and he was a shell of himself. With all that said jerry Jones in 25 years only won two more playoff games than jimmy did in Miami in a few seasons. Think about that..
Maurice Davis they changed the salary cap rules after 1995 so Jerry couldn’t buy championships anymore. That’s why his pocket book isn’t effective as it use to be.

@@surfsunsand In Rivers first year the Chargers locked up Brady and ran all over the Pats in the playoffs, Brady threw for under 200 yards and had 2 picks, that same year Drew Brees led the NFL in passing and passed all over the vaunted Bears defense in the Championship game, fell short because the run game couldn't get going, if Drew Brees had played against those Pats you would've beat the colts and followed that by beating the Bears... @Eric Gilbreath They had the Patriots beat. Game was over and instead of going down McCree fumbles the ball back to the Patriots. The next year they lose afc championship in new England. Rivers had a blown ACL from the previous week in Indianapolis. They were good enough.
@@Jamesmax22 They were close, but not good enough. It gets far more difficult to climb a single rank the higher up you go. That is, going from Divisional Champion to Conference Champion is far harder than going from losing season to Wildcard team.
It was clear the NFL was transitioning from run-oriented to pass-oriented. Marty was way too old school and relied entirely off the run game, which admittedly the Chargers were the best. Even their passing game involved Tomlinson, or occassionally Gates (a TE) or Sproles (primarily returner).
Would the Chargers be better than having Norv Turner at the helm. Definitely. Would they have beaten Indy, Baltimore, Pitt, or NE? You'd have to play at least 2 of them, and that wasn't happening under Marty's system.
Even if Marty stayed AJ “lord of no rings” Smith didn’t fix the defense and would get rid of players without replacing at least half of their value.
Or atleast gone to the superbowl.
They needed to be strong in all 3 phases . I think that special teams may have been a problem . In the playoffs , injuries are piling up , depth becomes a factor , and astute coaching is essential . I think that they had talent , but that they just didn't have all the ingredients . ( I think that Tomlinson has tarnished his own legacy with his comments .)
If they stuck with Brees and not pick Eli to trade for Rivers they could've gotten Larry Fitzgerald

Hindsight is always 20/20. Brees was mediocre up to that point which is why they had the goddamn number one pick and went after a qb. No to mention, Brees severely hurt his shoulder in his last game before hitting free agency.

Giving up Bree's was a mistake, but hear me out, the coaching staff wasn't utilizing him correctly. It was only when he teamed up Payton did he really start to shine. Even with 0 defense and hardly any Pro Bowlers (0 pro bowl receivers), the worst he ever did was 7-9
Brees shoulder was busted all to hell. Like no team would take a chance on him except the saints. Dolphins almost signed him when nick Saba was coach but the medical staff didn’t clear him. That injury was brutal and changed the course of history.... look up the clip. His arm damn near fell off.
They should've won a Super Bowl. How many teams can say they had 3 HOFs on one roster all entering their primes not have a ring to show. Might've had four depending on if the late great Junior Sean was on that defense at the time.

Mike Youngblood - I see you're an older fan as well. Gene Klein was a wreck as an owner; he cared more about his horses at Del Mar than he did about running an NFL franchise. Every one of the instances you mentioned were cost-cutting moves, not football moves. When he sold to Alex G. Spanos, I was thrilled... not so much because Spanos was like an incoming Messiah, but, because Klein would no longer be around. However, now with Alex's slapdick son, Dean, running the show, we're just as inept in the front office as we were under Klein's leadership.

AJ Smith the worst GM ever ruined our franchise, and he is part responsible for how our team is now. I loved '06 & '07 when we were one of the best teams in the NFL, we were stacked, MVP LT (Chargers GOAT), younger Philip, Malcolm Floyd M80, Vincent Jackson, Shawn Merriman, Antonio Gates, even more, we were a great team and it was great being a Chargers fan back then, in 2016 not so much but it's fun to reminisce on these golden days sometimes.

Also don’t forget Darren sproles as there return specialist and catching footballs when ever LT was tired.
At one point the coach was really excited about a young QB coming up in the draft. Really, really wanted him. The GM at the time went and looked at the game film, came back and said, "too slow." So the Patriots got him instead. Kid named Tom Brady.
So maybe Eli Manning and his dad were smart in wanting to go to the Giants.

Amen to that. The Chargers were the most underachieving team of that decade. They were stacked offensively and had a solid defensive with marquee names. The worst move possible was firing Marty......he was so under appreciated.

LT was my idol growing up. Definitely deserved a super bowl.
Marty was the right guy for that team. And you had an amazing running back that fit his style. The Chargers were a force during his time there and there's no doubt in my mind that they would've won at least one Super Bowl. But there were issues between Marty and the GM. When you have issues within the organization, it doesn't matter how much you're winning. It's sad but it's a proven fact. Even I was blown away after Marty was let go after finishing 14-2.
Green eyed Monster that just means that the team's executive management were inept. If Marty did not break any rules in the organization then he should not have been let go while he was achieving such a high level of success. Period. The GM should have found a way to get along with Marty since Marty was only doing his job, which was winning and making the team money.

The most underrated free agent move of all time was them letting special teams ace Kaseem Osgood go in free agency. That year the chargers had the #1 ranked offense AND #1 ranked defense, but lost at least 5 games due to special teams blunders, and they missed the playoffs.

It would be nice if people stop pretending Brees was the same quarterback in San Diego that he has been in New Orleans. He was pretty good his last few years in SD, but anyone who says the thought he'd be the kind of player he's become is lying. The Chargers ended up with the first pick in 2004 for a reason, Brees was pretty bad in 2003.
Yeah he only went to a pro bowl in the 2004 season with 27 td's to 7 picks, 3,159 yards on 65.5 completion percentage. Give me a break.

People really dont remember what drew brees was like on the chargers. Even when we let him go, the saints were desperate for a qb and it was a gamble for them to pick up drew brees. So we look back now and it seems like a bad move but honestly both qbs are great.
They are but Brees is better..and..Brees had experience..They forced Marty to play Rivers which essentially closed the talent window on the chargers by the time he had the experience..I'm appalled on how shitty the organization is ran, on par with how the Lions just milked Barry Sanders with no intention to win a Super Bowl...Just want ticket sales on there best player for a quick buck.
You have to remember Brees was a fringe top 10 QB when he was with the Chargers and he had a shoulder injury. He wanted max years for max dollars. You do the math.

Saints fan here and there’s no way you can blame San Diego for trading Brees. He had an injury that almost nobody thought he could come back from. We certainly had our doubts here in New Orleans. It all worked out of course but it was never a certainty. He always had average arm strength and a shoulder injury that severe could have retired him if not for the world’s best surgeon and Drew’s never say die attitude.

Even after Brees leaving (100% justifiable with Rivers there) and firing Marty (bad move no doubt) they had a shot. Nobody here mentioning how huge Marcus McNeil's career ending injury was, they've struggled at left tackle ever since.

Absolutely agree with LT.... firing Marty Schottenheimer is one of the worst moves I've ever seen a dominant team make. The Chargers only lost to the Patriots in the playoffs and they were some of the best playoff games ever. After LT left I stopped rooting for the Chargers... terrible ownership

he grew up with Bree's but it was Marty who wanted Rivers and Marty played Brees in a meaningless game which led to his injury
The irony is that the Marty gave up on Brees (he was close but it was only in New Orleans that he blossomed into the elite QB he is today) too soon and then the Bolts gave up on Marty too soon.
Getting rid of Brees was AJ Smith's decision.
Brees was not the Drew Brees of NO when he was in SD, how funny SD fans keep forgetting that, not to mention he had better weapons in SD I feel than he had in NO.. He had up and down seasons early in his career, and that awful 2003 season where he was given good weapons resulting in a 4-12 season and face it the opportunity was there to get Rivers and SD took it because Brees was sort of liked in SD but he was inconsistent and then he hurt his throwing shoulder on top of that. The fact that only 2 teams took a flyer on Brees when he was let go showed no one knew what his future would hold..

Michael Schmidt I always thought 2006 was more lined up for them. First round bye and players were heathy. I have no doubt they could have beaten the Colts in the AFC championship and they would have run roughshod over the Bears. But 2007 was also a great year for them but they just didn't have enough against the Patriots. I still think that if those players were healthy they could have won that game

To be fair they had to go through prime NE Patriots for the playoffs and I think that also played a part in them never making it to the SB.. They were a great, great team but didnt hold long enough to develop the mental fortitude to get through the full playoffs.

I like LT, and I'm not saying he's wrong, but he's the last charger that should be complaining. The only playoff memories I have of LT is him on the sideline riding an exercise bike. It seemed like he was always hurt come playoff time.
