I'm living 10k km away from Seattle out east all across the pond but the end legit made me sad. Seattle deserves a team like no other city. The Sonics were so cool, somebody needs to bring them back.
I’m from Vancouver and there’s a growing group of us who want an NBA team back. BUT more deserving of a team has to go to Seattle. That’ll always be at the top of the list of teams needed back.
Toronto could have easily been on the list of franchises on the outside of the NBA. Ownership/management matters and can be the biggest problem if they have no allegiance.
When I was a kid and just getting into basketball here in Australia, we didn’t get the NBA on Australian TV. We just had an hour long show every Sunday that gave us a rundown of the NBA week, Kemp was always my favourite player. His dunks were absolutely brutal. Thank god we now have NBA league pass.
Right you are.. I had told a co-worker who was born well past that era to go watch Kemp. He was literally amazed at the dunks and his creativity. IMO.. Seattle mgmt's break-up of GP and Kemp was just as responsible for them no longer having a franchise.
My most vivid memory of the Sonics was watching them blow a huge lead in a game against the Lakers in the 1980 playoffs. With their loss in that series so ended their hopes for back to back NBA titles.
The sonics were a thorn in the Houston Rockets side in the 80s and 90s.. Chambers , X man, Ellis. Will never forget the game when Olajuwon scored 49 points in double overtime in a losing effort.
Makes you wonder how good would the Sonics have been if they still had Chambers,McDaniel and Dale Ellis when the Sonics played the Bulls. They probably would have beaten the Bulls.

It was a blackmail the dude who bought the team on the condition he would get the sonics a better arena basically did the agree then turn your back on them 5 seconds later thing
As a teenager from Germany in the 90s: “The SuperSonics were iconic and need a comeback in the NBA. I won’t mind if OKC gets replaced. They are just a symbol of betrayal to me.”
Seattle Sonic should've never been moved. I am more so upset that the league did very little to keep the team in Seattle rather than allow for the team to be shipped to Oklahoma. We saw that the league moved heaven and earth for the Pelicans to remain in New Orleans. I do hope both Seattle and Vancouver get a their teams back for the sake of their loyal fan base.
I enjoyed this series of videos on the Sonics, however there’s a few things you left out. During the Sonics run against the Bulls in the finals, then Commissioner David Stern, commented on live tv that Key Arena was a beautiful facility and would last the team for decades. Which was a bold face lie from Stern who later when Clay Bennett, who was the NBA’s mediator for the sale of the Sonics, said the arena was not up to snuff and a new facility would be needed to keep the team in Seattle. Bennett, when all other “potential” offers to buy the team fell through, finally said that he “knew some fellows” in Oklahoma City would go in with him to buy the team. Howard Schultz gets a bad rap, and as a sonic fan, he deserves it, but as a businessman he doesn’t deserve the bad rap because he did actually attempt to get the team back to keep them from moving. One thing you should’ve also mentioned in the video during a photo shoot after the last draft the sonics were involved in, Russell Westbrook, who was the Sonics draft pick that year, did appear in a Seattle uniform but never played in it as the team moved to OKC.
Bring back the Sonics. Even as a Bullets/Wizards fan the league isn’t the same without them! Most likely will need a two team expansion to make it work.
My all time supersonics team 1.Gary Payton 2.Ray Allen 3.Kevin Durant 4.Shawn Kemp 5..Dennis Johnson 6.Spencer Heyward 7.Gus Williams 8.Detlef Schrempf 9.Jack sigma 10.Rashard Lewis 11.Fred Brown 12.Dale Ellis 13.Xavier McDaniel
That's a really good list. I like it. All those players in their prime playing on the same team would make the Sonics Great again. You did a great job on choosing the best Sonics players. 👍😀
That actually has been a misconception by so many people that don't know the facts. Key Arena wasn't just renovated. The old Coliseum, which was a dump, was totally demolished except for the main support beams and roof truces. They actually dug out the ground to deepen the arena to add more seating, in addition to adding club seats and luxury suites which the old Coliseum never had. The Brand new Key Arena was opened in 1995 and Commissioner David Stern was at courtside for the grand opening. David Stern praised the city of Seattle for the complete renovation of the brand new Key Arena. He said Seattle had done itself proud and he thought the new arena was Beautiful. The only negative thing about the new arena at the time was it didn't have restaurants and lounges inside the arena. So when it was rebuilt, it was rebuilt without the fancy restaurants and dance clubs within the building. So, Key Arena was only 12 years old when the Sonics relocated to Oklahoma City. It wasn't a dump, but it was one of the smallest arenas in the NBA at that time. It still seated over 17,000. Anyway, they totally demolished Key Arena except for the historic roof which has remained since 1962 when the original Coliseum was built. The city of Seattle built the new Climate Pledge Arena which opened last year and it is NBA ready. So hopefully Seattle will finally get the Sonics back.
Man oh man, I loved those 90's Sonics teams. I truly believe if not for running into the 72 win MJ lead Bulls, they would have won the title that year, they were that good. Reign Man & The Glove was fun to watch in it's prime. NBA JAM anybody? I dare you to try me on that game with me as Seattle, Payton was hell on D and would just push you down, Kemp would do 709 flips and spin from half court, & if I use Schemphf he would just shoot the lights out & had D. So any combo worked. Because MJ was not on the game, it made Seattle the best by default. Plus it was the perfect combo for a 2 on 2 game. All though I do admit the Charlotte was good too Mugsy & LJ, Spurs because they had Rodman then and him and The Admiral would just beat you up lol. The Knicks with Charles Oakley and Starks The Pistons we're sneaky good because of the 3 & D. Basically if you can't tell I pick the teams with D on that game. Anyone could score on it and the harder the game got it would come down to who would be able to take the ball away from and get stops. It's still my first favorite sports game ever. Either one to be honest, just depends on what team you like. I like the original alot but the tournament edition was just as good.
3:37 That was a money thing. For the exact reasons you mentioned, the Supersonics just couldn't fill enough seats in the Kingdome to justify the increased cost to rent the venue.
