  • On the Waterfront, a film from the 1950s, was scored by the great Leonard Bernstein.
    Here are 3 different corps from 3 different decades playing 3 different interpretations of On The Waterfront! Enjoy this piece that is classic Drum Corps: Fast, Loud, Raw.

    In this case I will say cadets. That entire show is so aggressive and so fast and light years ahead of anyone else in terms of design for 1986. 97 is very cool though. But 1986 is such an awesome show to me

    97 SCV...to quote Rocky IV: “throw the damn towel!” (To clarify, I grew up loving 86 Garfield and have mad love for Bloo’s treatment, but.....c’mon y’all, it’s 97 S.C.V.)

      Also in fairness, I’m biased as this was during my drum corps career and I got to see that line and corps several times a week. But like I said, I wore out the old audio cassette tape my HS instructor gave me of Garfield in 86 because of that OTW arrangement. That’s before I even knew what it was (one of the many, many instances of drum corps introducing me to an epic piece of art…same was true of Chick Corea and the mid-80s BD).

    Honestly can't choose between Garfield and SCV. Saw Garfield live and was absolutely floored by this section in their show. Unfortunately didn't get to see SCV live but their integrated treatment (all aspects of the corps) is on par with everything I've come to expect and love from them. Garfield's version for the drive and intensity, SCV for the complete package.

    I loved all 3 different renditions, and even though I do like SCV the best, I loved that Bluecoats took a song like this and made it truly "bluecoats". Its not like the other versions and I personally like the drill more.

    86 Cadets. Always kills me. Received a LETTER from director asking me if I wanted to audition.. my private trumpet teacher had connections to the corps..and my dad WOULDNT LET ME MARCH. And had I gone I probably would have aged out there in 88... grrr. But always loved that show.

      @@DevinEsleck My heart was with Garfield from '82 to '99. But the 2000 show, "We are the Future", annoyed the hell out of me and every Garfield show since then, except 2011 (Angels and Demons) has been disappointing. It's entirely subjective, of course.

      @@johnmerlino581 I’m sorry you feel that way. There is plenty of exciting musical and visual material from the last 22 years and it seems a little intense to be disappointed with every show since then besides one.

      @@DevinEsleck That's fair. I was a Vanguard fan at the start (about 1978 I think), the Cadets, then Cavaliers in the 2000's. But from about 2008 on there have only been a handful of shows that I've really liked: Phantom 2008 (Spartacus), Cadets 2011 (Angels and Demons), BD 2014 (Felliniesque), Bluecoats 2014 (Tilt) and Vanguard 2018 (Babylon). There may be a few others but they're not springing to mind. I'm totally aware that this is because I'm old and crotchety. :-)

    I'd have to just put SCV above Garfield because of the amazing Rosander/Casella combo. Besides, 97' was such an amazing year for SCV. Many consider it their "comeback" year though many in the corps don't like that term. 86' Garfield was just such an odd show tone-wise. Ahead of its time? Sure. Better than 97' SCV? Nah.

  • @jwp30

    The music from the Cadets was closest to the source material and was highly aggressive. The Cadets for me, but SCV's drill was phenomenal however the phasing was a bit obvious in their marching in sections.

    • @crwnguy
      @crwnguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was the year there was only like 12 of them. Notice they are in the corps proper uniform. They tried something different as the defending champ often does and marched like 90 brass.

    • @johnmerlino581
      @johnmerlino581 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@crwnguy Precisely. They had won three in a row and felt like experimenting big time. There essentially was no "color guard" in the traditional sense, and the few members doing "visual things" left room for a massive brass line, which was perfect for the music of "On the Waterfront". However, the closer of music from "Wonderful Town" was such a bizarre and jarring transition that it just didn't really work.
      Additionally, one corps member described that year very well - "We lost a boatload of veterans from '85. And '85 was far and away the most talented hornline I marched with. From their champion year of '84, there were only 22 horn spots for '85. It was tight. Onto '86, I think we had almost 50 new horn members. So there were lots of rookies. And some who had left after '85 were HUGE veterans who were the heart and soul of the corps. People who had marched since '80 and '81, coming from the bottom of the top twelve to world champions. These were special people. Of course, the drum line was always terrific. But with only 12 in the guard, we knew GE was going to be down. In '86 we also lost Zingali and Sylvester to Star for the year. And I think there was kind of a defeatist attitude, "There's no way they are going to let us win 4 times in a row, so let's just go out on a limb, do something different and creative and be memorable for trying something new. Let the chips fall where they may." Remember, '83 through '85 was the first three-peat. It was a huge deal when it happened."

    • @supersop
      @supersop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's be fair. Color Guard was not even part of the overall SCORE in 1986. They didn't care what place the guard ended up. That's why they lugged around portable boxing rings and plastic clarinet props. Instead they put 84 horns on the field (never been done before). Zingali was gone. Prime was gone. Barring the closer, this was still a kick butt show.

      It was not the former director fault. It was Bill Cook's fault. Bill coxed all of the Cadets visual staff with more money. The Cadets former director TRIED to expirement and lost his mind. Bill didn't like the new visual staff and fired most of the staff. The staff moved back to Cadets and won 87.
