When Copyright Goes Bad (English)

  • A film by Ben Cato Clough and Luke Upchurch.
Suddenly, copyright rules no longer do what they are supposed to do. They have gone bad.
This is a film about how copyright has become one of the most important consumer issues of the digital age; why corporate lobbying risks criminalising the actions of hundreds of thousands of people; and what the future holds for the fight for fairer copyright laws.
When Copyright Goes Bad is an introduction to the renegotiation of copyright and is for anyone interested in how copyright is affecting consumers. It features some of the key players in the copyright debate, including:
Fred Von Lohmann - Electronic Frontier Foundation; Michael Geist - University of Ottawa Law School; Jim Killock - Open Rights Group; and Hank Shocklee - Co-founder of Public Enemy.

As well as shortening copyright laws (if not abolishing them completely in favour of crowdfunding alternatives) the greatest thing that can also be done is to make it illegal for anyone, publishers or other third parties, to have a share in the copyright protection of the artist. That alone would make all the difference. That way nobody gets to poison the fluency of the market between artist and audience.
Personally, I will never surrender any copyright I have to any company - not even 1% of it.

I totally agree with you. I feel that copyright should be more about protecting profits in the sense that if consumers try to make a profit off of the works then they should be prosecuted. But if credit is given to the artist it shouldn't be a problem. It's kind of like plagiarism, when you cite your sources you're fine. as for industries they will stop if we stop supporting them totally. What I mean by that is like a boycott (don't watch, listen, buy, use, download, recreate the content at all)

This is a very well done conversation about new technology, entrenched business aiming only to maximize their "investments", i.e. artists. People will use what is available to them for expression. The big companies don't understand and will ultimately lose by attacking their income base. Copyright has changed deeply with the advent of computers and bears discussion. RIAA and MPAA are not discussing. Thanks.!

While I do support an artists or labels rights to have their property not be freely given away as it does cut into profits, versions that are not as pristine as studio releases could in effect generate free publicity for their work. Some may like it so much they choose to purchase the highest quality version available which is indeed from the label distributor. FLAC is a format that does not degrade with each generational copy but is rarely used due to its large file size.

the copyright issue is a thing that the industry(music, movies, etc) should have thought before letting companies like HP and Phillip make the cd writing technology available/affordable to the consumer, taking the bootleg era to a bigger proportion

I'm not against copyright in theory, but the laws definitely need to be loosened. Perhaps the best way to make this happen is to show corporations how current law actually limits their ability to make money, and I think there's a convincing argument for that. By preventing people from sharing copyrighted material or expressing their support of it, you are losing out on significant amounts of free advertising, which leads people to seek out the original.

The truth is we do have a control but it would be hard to do. We're the consumers we make them the money, if 90 percent of a corporations customers boycotted the business and said it was for lawsuit abuse, they wouldn't have a choice because without us, companies are nothing.

Interesting documentary, although I have to say it is slightly one-sided. I am a creator of creative material myself (without a big corporation) and copyrights are NOT only about being able to monetize the material in question, but the right to be able to determine for myself what happens to my creation. Someone who creates something, should be able to decide what happens to his or her creation or how it is distributed. Someone putting my creation up for download removes this control from me.

  • @DanieleMezzetti59
    @DanieleMezzetti59 14 ปีที่แล้ว

@innertubevideo . Yes you give it for free. Not all of it, but an appreciable fraction. This happens every time someone lends a book to a friend, for example. It is a peculiarity of almost all intellectual material that it cannot be appreciated and diffused wiithout a good measure of free distribution. It's not a problem of right and wrong, it's a problem of equilibrium.

I think copyright law went too far. Copyright makes sense when someone tries to steal something you created and gain profit from it. And I agree that THIS should be stopped, and sued, and charged, whatever.
You shouldn't be in the wrong for getting and sharing a song that you like. It increases the amount of potential customers and a "fan base".

Adequate and fair is when you get PAID for what you HAVE DONE.
    For example:
I wrote a piece of software. You buought it for 10000$.
Then i correct and upgrade my software.
Should you pay again for the whole thing (10000$)?
    NO!
You should ONLY pay for the updates and fixes (200$), as you already payed for the basic program, and all the real work i've done was additional.
You are also free to stick with the old, bugged version, because
    IT IS GENUINELY YOURS!

your correct copyright has gone too far. When you write a paper and cite your sources is that plagiarism? Besides if anyone are the crooks it's the corporations in the sense that they have the more say in the artists' work than the artist themselves most of the time. I understand they "took the most risks financially" but that doesn't mean that what they're and how they are going about "maintaining a profit" is fair in anyway in the least or even necessary a that. But such is life i suppose.

A copyright should be non-transferable (except in the case of the death of the author). It is the artists transferring their work to these money-hungry corporations that is destroying our society.

True fans will continue to buy music and attend concerts, thats all that matters. If I made a band I could care less about people stealing my music. Its spreading through the public and thats all that matters. If my music is good enough the people will buy it. As for copyright ruining peoples creativity with videos and AMVs I am absolutely against it. The copyright restrictions here on TH-cam are complete bullshit. The music industries will never get the point.

I think you guys are being to polite. I don't think we should just "renegotiate" copyright. I say lets just scrap the whole f*king thing down, lets not protect anything but attribution. If you don't want me to use your music as I see fit then keep it for yourself.People are afraid that without copyright there would be less music, less movie and whatever.I don't know that it's true but if it is, then good riddance.Lets get rid of all the parasites and keep only those who do art for the sake of art

I have every album in from Metallica (Record, Cassette, CD, Videotape) right up until the band attacked its fans and called us thieves for using Napster - since then i have paid $0 to that band. I know longer enjoy their music and dislike them passionately.
Before they were a megaband they were publicly stating that trashy bootlegs is where they got their inspiration, how they accessed most of the bands that inspired them etc - fucking hypocrites say it was good for them, not for us.

This notion is totally stupid. If you enjoy something or like something, you benefit from it. It is an even exchange if you pay for it. Elementary!
If you go to a restaurant and like the food, do you just take it? Get real stupids.
