Thanks for a great overview of a great camera. Just shot my first roll at the coast using the prism meter and the RZII motor derive, and got some spectacular results. Also, the Mamiya wireless remote that I purchased for the 645 works with the RZ. Happy shooting!.
Great review Matt! I have the RZ67 Pro II and would never part with it :) Also keep in mind you can get a digital back for it, you first need to get the digital back adapter and then buy a back or you can get the RZ67 Pro IID which is the digital version. I do agree after adding the ad-ons the camera can get a bit heavy if you're walking around with it, so what I did was also picked up the Mamiya 645AFD for when I am shooting in the streets. Mamiya's price's are very reasonable today compared to back in the day. Just go to Ebay and you can find some great deals. And as Matt said Mamiya glass is 2nd to none! And what you pay for a 2.8 lens you will never get a Canon L series or Nikon lens at those prices.
Great overview matt! Only things I think you might have missed are that you set ISO individually on each film back and the AE prism finder will automatically set the right exposure depending on which speed you have set on each back film (but you also said you don't use the AE feature). Also someone might wonder how to do mirror up shoots to minimize risk of mirror shake. Also what the T and N switch on each lens is. Otherwise I think you nailed it... :)
Excellent review. Clear and concise. Very thorough. The way Matt handled the camera made it look less like the over heavy "toad" that some reviewers have likened the camera to. I want one but I am not sure that it would be useful for landscape photography.
this was my "workhorse " camera for years and before that the rb67.just loved the rock solid build.great lenses and always preferred the format to hasselblad.just as easy to use off the tripod with the hand grip and prism.quality.
My friend has one of these bad boys with the same 110mm f2.8 lens. He's looking at putting a digital back on it at some point. I just love how incredibly modular they are.
That thing is Yuuuuuge! Every time I see one of these at my local camera store, I'm blown away. If I had a studio, maybe. I'm sure most of these live on a tripod permanently. I know the image quality is great. I'd love to see someone walk around with one of these doing street photography, lol. Matt Day, get better soon!

I have the same camera and I love it. It's like you said, it's a fun camera to use. Of course, it's not the one a person would carry around every day due to the bulkiness and weight. The quality of the prints is definitely sharp, more so than 35mm, including digital. Nice video - I'm now a subscriber. Keep shooting

I don't know if I missed it or not, but did you mention the weight? The RZ with the back and AE prism, and a small lens like the 65mm, is over 7.5 lbs (3.5kg). Although it doesn't sound like a lot, it's very difficult to handhold it steadily, and you need a quality tripod.
+matt day I have a rather detailed question about the Mamiya RZ and how it relates to the Pentax67. I am looking to pick up one of these two cameras with the standard lens, ie the 110 f2.8 and the 105 f2.4 respectively. I understand a lot of the differences between these two cameras, and I get all of that. But, my main question relates to their ability to focus at reasonably wide apertures. Which camera has the better focusing screen to hit focus? Also, did you find there was a difference of ease in hitting focus with the mamiya with either the WLF or the AE prism. Thanks in advance
I recently picked up one of these cameras myself, and I have a question about the shutter speed. Both the camera body and the lens have shutter speed adjustments. Do you have to use only the lens one because it's a leaf shutter, or do you need to match the two?

PX28s are pretty common batteries, just don't rely on them in the cold - Canon A series SLRS (A1, AE1, etc) take the same battery and I used to have to swap out batteries a lot shooting in just about 0 degree weather... which is when I gave up and switched to an F-1 and Nikon F/F2 SLRs. Mamiya 7 takes the same battery as well, FWIW, although I've gotten much more use out of those suckers in that camera, although they still don't last that long, maybe 20-30 rolls of film? I just recently found my film scanner when moving and now, the only missing part before I buy the camera is to make sure I find a film lab that will process the film, since they kind of disappeared many years ago ;) Of course I could start with B&W, since I still have the tanks.... hmmm

I want to buy another one (I only have one) so I can have Portra and then some sort of Ilford B & W loaded up as well (and, heck, maybe a third one for Velvia or whatever). I really like the rotating back =(... i have a pentax 67 105mm 2.4 with waist finder... shooting portrait is pain in arse... but it make the camera way lighter then rz67. sometimes when i going to shoot lots of portrait i switch back to the TTL prism
I'm currently shooting with a 8x10 field camera. I'm looking at either the RB or RZ as a "portable" camera I could take on a stroll through a city. Some had said it's so heavy it can really only be used on a tripod? I'm looking for something that I can handhold. What are your thoughts? Thanks and great video!
There is nothing portable about the RZ/RB 67 cameras. I would put in the class of a lightweight 4x5 like a Graflex. Quirky controls but if used regularly it becomes less so. As much as I loved mine, it is a portrait and landscape camera that does best on a tripod. Amazing bargain or an expensive paper weight. It just depends upon your intentions. The Hasselblad/Bronica square format or a Bronica 645 ETRSi are far lighter and handholding friendly.
My RZ67 Pro ii is a heavy beast, so on walk about, I take my Mamiya 645 Pro TL. Much lighter. I have the motordrive/grip and can hold and shoot one handed.
If you can afford it, without a doubt Mamiya 7 best lenses ever made for 6x7 only issue is you cant easily use filters and its not a portrait camera, but for those slower more considered situations you can use your 8x10 or 4x5 anyway. I'm looking to pick one up to supplement my RZ67 to use for street stuff and any landscape I can get away with.

One thing you forgot to mention which was a big upgrade from the RZ67 is that the viewfinder glass is much brighter in the RZ67 Pro II, but you can upgrade the glass.
I just inherited one of these cameras from a relative and it won’t release the shutter if side switch is in the vertical position but it will in the “M” position. Is this because there is no film in the camera or is it a fault? I don’t want to waste a film if the camera is faulty. Any knowledge on this matter?
can the RB take all the same accessories as the RZ? you mentioned not the newer lenses but the instant film back, the view finder? and can you plug in a pocketwizard to fire strobe and speed lights?
i have an rz67 & pro ii from my old studio job but it seems that the shutter does not fire at correct speeds. shooting at 8" or 1/125, shutter sounds the same. any help would be great! (shutter tested without film loaded, shouldn't make a difference?)
But the 105mm f/2.4 is insanely beautiful... sometime without the leaf shutter... it make the whole system lenses faster then those with leaf shutter. you can get 165mm 2.8 with pentax but never with mamiya
So ive been told, but after the events of a few weeks ago im no longer seeking to buy a mamaiya, after having the chance to buy one i got caught me off guard by its sheer size. and ive lost interest in it, plus the only reason i wanted one was for the interchangeable backs, thought it was a cheep alternative to a hassy. But it also leads me to my second reason, i have too many cameras and i never know witch one to use, there for im trying to cut down on buying some. and more on selling those i don't use and sticking to the ones i do. sorry for the horrible grammar and spelling .
What kind of hotshoe flash do you use or CAN you use with this mamiya? Also, does it have the capability to be used as an off camera speedlight? I own a mamiya rz67 pro and am having difficulty finding answers online that will help me purchase the correct speedlight. Thanks in advance.
I just got one of these cameras but the shutter won’t fire if the lever on the right is between “R” and “M”. It will only fire on “M”. Is there a fault or am I doing something wrong?
I always had a question about this camera. When you rotate the back to portrait, it's gonna take the picture in portrait orientation but the framing of the camera body it's still landscape, so you're losing parts of the picture right? Also, how do you frame on the finder? does it comes with vertical frame lines?
How does it compare against a 500cm for weight and shooting handheld? If you had to pick one of those two based how much you like shooting them (not technical stuff) which would it be?

@@stevenygz Its a NPC back made by Marty Forscher, they were generally a fraction of the price. He also made 35mm backs using a fibre optic pad.

Willem Verbeek uses an RZ67 walking around the streets. He has multiple videos on TH-cam.
It is very walkable, I've done it! Since it's modular you can reduce it's weight and size so that it fits your needs as perfectly as it can

A place called "The Darkroom" does all my color medium and large format. I do my own b/w.

You'll get 10 negatives from a 120 roll. The quality is up to you.

Can I ask what brand of the instant film back is that?
Its a NPC back made by Marty Forscher, they were generally a fraction of the price. He also made 35mm backs using a fibre optic pad.
I am thinking of getting into Medium Format with the possibility of buying an RZ67, however, I am a little concerned about manual focus. Just how easy (or indeed difficult) is manual focus with the RZ67?

I really like the rotating back =(... i have a pentax 67 105mm 2.4 with waist finder... shooting portrait is pain in arse... but it make the camera way lighter then rz67. sometimes when i going to shoot lots of portrait i switch back to the TTL prism
I'm currently shooting with a 8x10 field camera. I'm looking at either the RB or RZ as a "portable" camera I could take on a stroll through a city. Some had said it's so heavy it can really only be used on a tripod? I'm looking for something that I can handhold. What are your thoughts? Thanks and great video!
There is nothing portable about the RZ/RB 67 cameras. I would put in the class of a lightweight 4x5 like a Graflex. Quirky controls but if used regularly it becomes less so. As much as I loved mine, it is a portrait and landscape camera that does best on a tripod. Amazing bargain or an expensive paper weight. It just depends upon your intentions. The Hasselblad/Bronica square format or a Bronica 645 ETRSi are far lighter and handholding friendly.
My RZ67 Pro ii is a heavy beast, so on walk about, I take my Mamiya 645 Pro TL. Much lighter. I have the motordrive/grip and can hold and shoot one handed.
If you can afford it, without a doubt Mamiya 7 best lenses ever made for 6x7 only issue is you cant easily use filters and its not a portrait camera, but for those slower more considered situations you can use your 8x10 or 4x5 anyway. I'm looking to pick one up to supplement my RZ67 to use for street stuff and any landscape I can get away with.

Is the Pro II a better investment than the regular mamiya rz67?

One thing you forgot to mention which was a big upgrade from the RZ67 is that the viewfinder glass is much brighter in the RZ67 Pro II, but you can upgrade the glass.
I just inherited one of these cameras from a relative and it won’t release the shutter if side switch is in the vertical position but it will in the “M” position. Is this because there is no film in the camera or is it a fault? I don’t want to waste a film if the camera is faulty. Any knowledge on this matter?
can the RB take all the same accessories as the RZ? you mentioned not the newer lenses but the instant film back, the view finder? and can you plug in a pocketwizard to fire strobe and speed lights?

i have an rz67 & pro ii from my old studio job but it seems that the shutter does not fire at correct speeds. shooting at 8" or 1/125, shutter sounds the same. any help would be great! (shutter tested without film loaded, shouldn't make a difference?)
I have been thinking of the Mamiya RZ67, but im going to wait a bit and enjoy my Pentax 67. but planing on getting mamiya in the future.
But the 105mm f/2.4 is insanely beautiful... sometime without the leaf shutter... it make the whole system lenses faster then those with leaf shutter. you can get 165mm 2.8 with pentax but never with mamiya
So ive been told, but after the events of a few weeks ago im no longer seeking to buy a mamaiya, after having the chance to buy one i got caught me off guard by its sheer size. and ive lost interest in it, plus the only reason i wanted one was for the interchangeable backs, thought it was a cheep alternative to a hassy. But it also leads me to my second reason, i have too many cameras and i never know witch one to use, there for im trying to cut down on buying some. and more on selling those i don't use and sticking to the ones i do.

What kind of hotshoe flash do you use or CAN you use with this mamiya? Also, does it have the capability to be used as an off camera speedlight? I own a mamiya rz67 pro and am having difficulty finding answers online that will help me purchase the correct speedlight. Thanks in advance.

I just got one of these cameras but the shutter won’t fire if the lever on the right is between “R” and “M”. It will only fire on “M”. Is there a fault or am I doing something wrong?
I always had a question about this camera. When you rotate the back to portrait, it's gonna take the picture in portrait orientation but the framing of the camera body it's still landscape, so you're losing parts of the picture right? Also, how do you frame on the finder? does it comes with vertical frame lines?

How does it compare against a 500cm for weight and shooting handheld?
If you had to pick one of those two based how much you like shooting them (not technical stuff) which would it be?
The 500c is a lot smaller and lighter. I would say a lit of th bulk with the rb and rz is the bellows.
I used to shoot with a Hasselblad h1 with film back before it was disappeared from my car after a shoot. I've been looking at a used RZ67 for a while and found a great deal. What is a good portrait lens
best portrait lens is 110mm f/2.8 (around $500), next best is macro 140mm

Hey, nice overview. My lever won't go forward after i have taken a shot and the film wont advance. It also makes a buzzing noise. All the usual suspects covered e.g. darkslide removed, lens attached correctly, battery new...any thoughts? thanks in advance
Try taking a pencil eraser and cleaning the contacts between the film back and the body.

What do the dials do on the top of the prism finder?
One is secondary shutter speed, the other is for minute aperture change of +1-2-3/-1-2-3.
Is it a radio on your right side?
